Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Saturday, June 21, 2008 - 09:14 am:

Aladino Mandoli was recently here in the Calumet area, where he and another visitor were treated to a tour of the Copper Country Curling Club. The smiling gentleman in the first shot, shows us the way inside, while Dino snaps the photos for us to see. Since 2005, the Club calls a building that was formerly the Calumet & Hecla Mining Company's Drill Shop, home. It's located a few hundred feet from the Calumet High School. Along with the Keweenaw Historical National Park and Calumet Township, the CCCC is converting this historical building into a permanent curling facility for the club. During the winter curling season, the building houses 2 sheets of ice, locker rooms, concession, social area, raised viewing, storage and physical plant. In the second and third pictures we get a glimpse inside, first at what's called the "house", that's the target that the curlers are aiming for. Then in the last photo, we get a look down the lanes toward the targets, from what I think is the raised viewing area. It looks kind of dark and dreary without the colorful ice, but during the season, the place is lit up and shining. You can check out some winter pictures of the facility on the Club's website by clicking HERE.

Always thought curling was cool!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Saturday, June 21, 2008 - 09:19 am:

I'm on the opposite side. I've always disliked curling. I'd watch it as a little kid on CBC and just did not like it. Can't understand why it's an Olympic sport, but whatever floats your boat.

By John Preisler (Jpreisler) on Saturday, June 21, 2008 - 09:33 am:

Something tells me that when this game was invented, a few guys were freezing their collective patootie off, and the guy with the broom was the colder of them. Sweepin fast just to keep warm!

And after that, some vodka, a sauna, a dip in the frozen pond, and back in the sauna...right??

Its not hockey, but not everything can be :)

Variety is the spice of life.

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Saturday, June 21, 2008 - 09:36 am:

I love the sport, that's probably because the only ice we have here is in the Civic center for our hockey team. Heaven forbid anything else on ice like curling. I think it takes a certain magic to curl and thus we have an olympic team.

i agree with john... it's not hockey but it does involve ice

By michael j. adams (Adzie40) on Saturday, June 21, 2008 - 09:50 am:

oh yea... nice to see rupert and dino

Watch curling on the CBC--Canadians know how to make it exciting. It's great to know it has been re-established in the Keweenaw. Makes me think of the Duluth Curling and Skating Club. Cool.

THE STRUCTURE LOOKS A LITTLE ROUGH, EVEN FOR THE TOUGH YOOPER CROWD. YOU MAY WANT TO CONCENTRATE A LITTLE MORE ON NATURE PICTURES.

Mary says: UPwannabe ~ You might want to look at the links I included in the notes above and see the transformation the inside of the building makes in the winter with the lights and ice in there. It's an historic building and instead of tearing it down, this group, in conjunction with KHNP and the township have found a good use for it. It may not be the prettiest picture you've ever seen on the Pasty Cam, but it is part of our local culture and history too. Thanks for viewing!

Geeeeeeezawizzzzzzzz Nothing to inspire anyone that's for sure. I guess you gotta just love the sport to pratice in there....!!!!!

I never could figure out just how they know when to let go of that heavy thing........It sure looks like it could hurt someone if it went the wrong way.....?????? Maybe I am not sure what curling is......do they wiz around in a circle....???? Well, I am not only a blond....I grew up in DETROIT!!!!!
God Bless every one........

Mary says: Helen ~ I don't know a lot about curling either, but there are several links in my notes above, including one for the C.C. Curling Club and another telling a bit about curling. Check them out and then you'll know as much as I do about the sport! ;->

Do everyone a favor and turn off the caps lock key!
If you want to yell, go elsewhere!

By Danielle L. Adams (Badkid) on Saturday, June 21, 2008 - 03:28 pm:

Well curling isn't my thing either but, it does look fun from what I have seen on tv. Yes them Canadians sure are good!! Always wondered where the Curling Club here was. Guess now I now lol I think it'd be fun to try anyways, I mean we all can't be great but, there sure would be a lot of laughs!! Maybe this winter a bunch of us here should get together and give it a try and see how it goes, never know ya may come back for more!

really great pictures

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Saturday, June 21, 2008 - 04:37 pm:

Curling is a lot of fun, but I realize it can be a little daunting for those that have never tried it or even got into all the details of the sport. It requires a skill and concentration that is not found in a lot of other sports. As far as the stones they use (had to throw geology into this ;-), they come from Ailsa Craig in Scotland which the Dr. and I will be visiting in a couple weeks. I'm going to try and bring home a sample if I can......

I commend anyone that wants to use the old buildings for recreation activities. Too many see those old buildings as eyesores and would like to see them torn down and for what, more overpriced condos and strip malls??? Go get em Mary......

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Saturday, June 21, 2008 - 05:11 pm:

Capt...thanks for passing the stone info along and have fun in Bonnie Scotland, my birthplace. I hope the weather is good when your there and try to bring back a photo of Nessie.

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Saturday, June 21, 2008 - 08:30 pm:

Hey I'm open to learn about anything new, including curling. Esp. if it's tradional. Now personally, to me golfing is what I call a dumb game. But that's MY opinion.

By Just me (Jaby) on Saturday, June 21, 2008 - 09:52 pm:

Hey! I recognize the character in the first photo. That's RUPE! [mandoli] He is an infamous former hockey player from our area!

It's always interesting to see what Google ads pop up at the bottom of the posting area as a result of our PastyCam discussions. Today's topic is the sport of curling, so, naturally, there is an ad for curling ribbon!

I used to love to watch curling on CBC when I was growing up too. When I was in fifth grade our English teacher assigned us to write a report describing our favorite sport, so I wrote about curling. She gave me a C and I was very upset. She told me it was because curling was a joke and not a real sport! Mrs. Euphrat was not my favorite teacher.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, June 22, 2008 - 07:57 am:

Most sports would be better if they were hockey.
Mr. Deb

Reminds me of a great episode of Corner Gas, my favourite Canadian sitcom on CTV and WGN. Curling is really a great sport once you get watching it. I started watching during the Olympics in Torino. Glad to see it making an appearance in the UP!
