Standing on the shores of Lake Superior is always a treat, whether you're picking rocks, smelling the flowers or wetting your feet. Thanks to Brooke Gubacz (and her son Taylor), we get a chance at all three today. Actually, this time of year, putting your feet in Lake Superior would be a bit more numbing than later in the summer, so just looking at Taylor wetting his toes, is enough for me right now. In the other two photos, Brooke was able to capture more of the magic that can be found when you visit Gitche Gumee. The beauty of the rock covered beach, just waiting to be picked over by rock-hounds and the occasional wild flower sprouting out from those rocky shores. No wonder so many people are drawn to the Big Lake time after time.

Wish I were there right now wading in the beautiful Big Lake!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, June 10, 2008 - 07:05 am:

Wish I were there too, but not wading. It's too cold for me. When we're out fishing on the smaller lakes around here, and I see people swimming in them, I think they're nuts!!! And this water's probably 10 times warmer than the Big Lake!! August is soon enough for me.

Great photos!

What is the name of those flowers? They seem to be blooming all over the Keweenaw right now.

WOW!! What a sight this morning. I almost drown right off this shore line pic in 1991. I had to make this pic my desktop theme for the day.

By Jeff Kalember (Jeffkal) on Tuesday, June 10, 2008 - 08:14 am:

the big lake is saying "Hey kid ... i DARE you to come in ..." 34 degrees is still a bit cold.

By Hilarie Alwine (Halwine) on Tuesday, June 10, 2008 - 08:46 am:

Surprisingly enough, we saw several people swimming in Lake superior in Marquette this past Weekend. It was over 90 degrees in Marquette on Saturday! Our 2 1/2 year old couldn't keep herself out of the cold water! Time for more swimming lessons!

I really enjoyed today's pics! Looks so wonderful! The flowers look like violets to me!

Ahhhhhhhhhh GITCHEE...I MISS YOU!!
Great job Brooke and Mary
Nature’s Vitamin Pill: The Common Blue Violet

The leaves and blossoms are amazingly rich in vitamin A. A half-cup serving of violet-leaf greens will fortify your body with as much vitamin D as you could get from four average oranges and also give you more than the recommended minimum daily requirement of Vitamin A. The Pennsylvania Dutch children are wise in eating violet blossoms, for these tasty little flowers are three times rich in Vitamin D, weight for weight, as oranges.

Hunters Point is so beautiful, so we went exploring. Its very peaceful when you DON'T have a 7 year old boy with you, but fun when you do.

Brenda, and to think I gave him crackers when he wanted a snack.

I was at the Calumet Waterworks about a week ago and saw a few kids actually swimming. Gave me a shiver just to watch. But then again, I was in that cold water at that age also. To be young.

Are you sure you don't mean vitamin C? I haven't looked it up, but
that would make more sense to me. D is usually absorbed from
sunshine and fortified dairy products.

August, here we come!

By Uncle Chuck @ Little Betsy (Unclechuck) on Tuesday, June 10, 2008 - 04:54 pm:

GO AHEAD TAYLOR, JUMP IN! I BET MOM'S GOT ANOTHER SET OF CLOTHES! GREAT PIC'S, I'D TAKE HIM FOR ICE CREAM AFTERWARD, BUT THEN, IAM UNCLE CHUCK!

By Brenda Leigh (Brownmoose) on Tuesday, June 10, 2008 - 05:13 pm:

Cathering, thanks for the correction. You are right it should have been Vitamin C....

By Brenda Leigh (Brownmoose) on Tuesday, June 10, 2008 - 05:22 pm:

Sorry, Catherine, can't seem to type the right letters today...I spelled your name incorrectly now....sorry.

By Catherine Ristola--Holland MI (Catherine) on Tuesday, June 10, 2008 - 06:18 pm:

S'alright, I didn't know that about violets in any case and that was
very interesting.

Hi
We were up north at Cheboygan over Memorial Day. My cousin Barbie's daughter, Taylor, and my cousin Mark's daughter, Elise, are close in age & real partners in crime. They lobbied hard to be allowed to go in Lake Huron, employing the classic "Look, my pants are wet already" among other tactics, but the idea was vetoed by the parent on the beach.

The area looks lovely, especially compared to SE Michigan lately--a steambath punctuated by severe thunderstorms.

By Paul Oesterle (Paulwebbtroll) on Wednesday, June 11, 2008 - 01:49 am:

I wonder how far the ripples from the rock Taylor just threw in the water have traveled by now!

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Wednesday, June 11, 2008 - 08:05 am:

Uncle Chuck, we both got ice cream!

By Uncle Chuck @ Little Betsy (Unclechuck) on Wednesday, June 11, 2008 - 10:15 am:

Brooke, was it Jilbert's? lol

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Wednesday, June 11, 2008 - 10:48 am:

You bet it was!
