There has been considerable melting here in the Keweenaw over the last few days, but thanks to E. Neil Harri, we get a glimpse of the landscape from the air and it's showing there's still white stuff on the ground here UP North. The first two shots are taken in the Lac La Belle area. Neil said this is the area being considered in the new 1700 acre land acquisition for non-motorized vehicles. In that top photo, you can see the ridge that runs just south of the Mountain Drive on the upper right of the pic, with Lake Superior behind it. The Keweenaw Mountain Lodge is in the foreground just to the right of middle. Lake Medora is the white spot, left of center and Mount Baldy or Lookout Mountain is in the distance, toward the middle. This is looking West.

The last photo from Richard Barclay is a neat prospective of the melting ice in the Big Lake, as the floes break up and start to disappear. I like the "piggy back" rider towards the middle of the photo. Looks like it must have a little weight to it too, as it's keeping the larger floe underwater.

Great pictures!!!

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Thursday, April 17, 2008 - 07:46 am:

I think Cool! is just not the most appropriate word today. Something like almost frigid because the snow is still present, but there is open water.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Thursday, April 17, 2008 - 08:07 am:

This is looking West.????

Neither one of those top two pictures are looking west, Mary!! The top photo is more Northeast and the middle photo is almost due East. Neil would have been Southwest of Bohemia looking straight on it. The ridge you see in the upper right of the first photo are the ridges along the Burma Road heading East along the Peninsula towards the point; somewhere out there in the centre of the top photo are the old Clark and Star Mines. I do not see Lake Medora or Lookout Mountain at all as those would be a little further West of the photo out of view.

Mary says: Good job Capt. Paul! That was just "bait" to see who'd catch my snafu! :->
Thanks for steering me in the right direction!

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Thursday, April 17, 2008 - 08:20 am:

Whatever the direction...Thankyou Mary, Neil, and Richard for today's beautiful pics!

By E. Neil Harri (Ilmayksi) on Thursday, April 17, 2008 - 08:33 am:

The Capt is right Mary. The second image I sent is the one with proposed trails.

Keep em on their toes Mary.

Thanks for the update Neil.

Could that be Deer Lake in picture #2, short and right of Lac La Belle ?
Keep up the nice picture's.

By Uncle Chuck @ Little Betsy (Unclechuck) on Thursday, April 17, 2008 - 09:51 am:

Great Pictures!

By Rowdy (Roudymi) on Thursday, April 17, 2008 - 09:55 am:

Deer L. is to the right in the second pic, but I think it's right off the picture. I think those are just the sloughs. Went kayaking in there last summer.

Always love Neils pictures, again thanks.

By JAD, Oscar, MI (Jandalq) on Thursday, April 17, 2008 - 11:36 am:

Is that Mt. Houghton directly above Bohemia and Bare
Bluff to the right?

By JAD, Oscar, MI (Jandalq) on Thursday, April 17, 2008 - 11:37 am:

Whoops--2nd shot.

By fy1 (Formeryooper1) on Thursday, April 17, 2008 - 12:25 pm:

Deer Lake is off to the right in the second picture, but the "sloughs" are the Little Gratiot River meadows - not connected to Deer Lake. The old Betsy "highway" passed over the river on the east end of the meadows - bridge has been washed out since the 70's.

We have pics of my brother and I when we were kids standing on those little icebergs just as they were all breaking up! What fun. Gorgeous sight to see, and hear! When the ice moves in and out, the eerie sound is really cool.
I was just back there for five days(for the big storm!!!). One side of our beach was open and the other was still full of ice and snow. Within a day after the storm, the ice and snow were pretty much gone along the lake (on the beach that is, the yard still had a lot!). The wind that came along with the snow storm moved the ice out! It was fun to see the canal by the bridge melt so quickly too. Amazing how fast it can happen. It's been a long winter for the Yoopers. I could see it in many of the faces!! Let's hope for a wonderful summer, they deserve it.

Will the real "WEST" photo please step forward? :->

Looking West
Ok, NOW I have the correct photo for the description I had in my notes above: "Neil said this is the area being considered in the new 1700 acre land acquisition for non-motorized vehicles. You can see the ridge that runs just south of the Mountain Drive on the upper right of the pic, with Lake Superior behind it. The Keweenaw Mountain Lodge is in the foreground just to the right of middle. Lake Medora is the white spot, left of center and Mount Baldy or Lookout Mountain is in the distance, toward the middle. This is looking West."
Thanks again Neil!

Mary you're the best in my book! What's U.P. with the non- motorized vehicles?

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Thursday, April 17, 2008 - 05:30 pm:

Would a non-motorized vehicle be a horse? Or a person?

By D. Clark (Dcclark) on Thursday, April 17, 2008 - 05:35 pm:

Perhaps a bike?

By R.C. (Red) on Thursday, April 17, 2008 - 07:46 pm:

Bike...cross country skis...snow shoes, & etc, Eh?

By E. Neil Harri (Ilmayksi) on Thursday, April 17, 2008 - 08:25 pm:

If you look at 1700 acre photo in the bottom left corner, The part of slew you can see is the end of Lake Manganese which is already state owned. The trails would connect to golf course and beyond. The proposed aquisition ends by Lake Medora. In the far distance you can see top of Mt Baldy just right of center of photo. That is a hiking ,non motorized trail already and maybe could connect eventually.
I believe this wil be the last time to get this land in one contigous parcel. It will be broken to smaller parcels in the future and blocked off to access. It would be a huge benefit to future recreational tourism in County and Mountain lodge.
It would go well with the motorized trails we already have.

By Clinton Drake (Clint) on Friday, April 18, 2008 - 09:26 pm:

Is there somewhere I could read more about the land acquisition?

By B. McKamey (Bmckamey) on Saturday, April 19, 2008 - 01:42 pm:

Is this what the acquisition is for?
