Good morning all. What time was it in Arizona when you posted Betty? TGIF for those of you who are not retired!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Friday, March 14, 2008 - 06:59 am:

Good Morning, Everyone! Happy Friday, TGIF! (Now if my fingers would just get in gear to type, this morning...) Congratulations, Betty, on your Night Owl! I'm assuming that your sticker will show up soon. How is your husband doing? Has his shoulder healed well?

Favorite: Snowdrifts in the Sky!
I still love that tune, Tiger Bay. I wish it was available on CD. I've searched the internet but cannot find it.

I hope Grandpa Norm and Linda were able to make it to the Yooper Picnic in Sarasota yesterday too. They were really looking forward to it. Have a great weekend eveyone!!

Paul Oesterle (Paulwebbtroll):"What time was it in Arizona when you posted Betty?"

Paul, that would have been 12:10AM, or 00:10 MST (Mountain Standard Time). Arizona is smart enough to not switch to DST — about the last thing we need is one more hour of blazing sunlight in the evening!

By Ozzie W. (10330) on Friday, March 14, 2008 - 02:17 pm:

Norma,What is your Grandpa Norm,s last name

By Uncle Chuck @ Little Betsy (Unclechuck) on Friday, March 14, 2008 - 03:14 pm:

Oz, Grampa Norm is actually our dad, but he is referred to as Grampa Norm to his grand kids, full name, Norm and Linda Paulson. I thinks they attended that event. They return from Fla. mid May and then it's off to L.B. with Marty and me to open U.P. the camp.

Here's unique bit of additional information about time zones, and Daylight Saving Time, in Arizona.

As noted at WebExhibits:Daylight Saving Time [with minor editing, emphasis, added links, by myself]:

Quote:

In the U.S., Arizona doesn’t observe Daylight Saving Time, but the Navajo Nation (parts of which are in three states [AZ, UT and NM]) does.

However, the Hopi Reservation, which is entirely surrounded by the Navajo Nation, follows the State of Arizona in using Mountain Standard Time and not observing DST. In effect, there is a donut-shaped area of Arizona that does observe DST, but the “hole” in the center does not.

Just to make this a bit more interesting, there is Jeddito CDP, a 5.6 square mile enclave of the Navajo Indian Reservation (population 390 at the 2000 census) that is completely surrounded by territory of the Hopi Indian Reservation, which ironically is itself surrounded by the Navajo Reservation. So if this small Navajo community conforms to the practice of the Navajo nation at large, that would yield a further mini time-warp within the Hopi donut-hole!

See this map of the Navajo Nation — Hopi land and The Hopi Reservation is located in the areas of lavender and yellow on the map. Click map to zoom in for a closer view. Note the white island of Jeddito surrounded by the Hopi reservation in pink.

Shades of the widespread confusion during the 1950s and 1960s when each U.S. locality could start and end Daylight Saving Time as it desired, with 23 different pairs of DST start and end dates in Iowa alone!

Grandpa Norm and my wife have known each other for a long time. She used to be the secretary to the Calumet High School alumni association in the Detroit area and grandpa always donated a TV to the reunion. We had a nice long talk with him and Linda yesterday at the picnic.

Thank you FRNash! I knew as soon as I posted that someone or two would inform me of the Arizona time so I looked it up myself. But I do appreciate the thought! Thanks again.

Oz, that's nice to hear.
Thanks,
UC
