It never ceases to amaze me, the different colors, opacity and uniqueness the icy formations undertake along Lake Superior's shores. The top photo from Karl Berg has an added bonus in that he used the frozen sculptures to frame the sun, along with the lighthouse at McLain's.

Using the sun in his shot too, David Riutta colored this icy subject a rusty hue. David's composition especially contrasts a warm glow, with the icy coldness...complete opposites.

Even though you're unable to find the rocks underneath, there are still plenty of interesting shapes and sizes of ice to observe on the banks of Gitche Gumee. You just can't take them home with you for souvenirs, unless you keep them in your freezer.

Is it the Inuit who have something like 30+ words for snow and ice?

By Jeff Kalember (Jeffkal) on Friday, March 7, 2008 - 06:47 am:

As i was looking at the picture i realized there is no perspective !!! Are those ice blocks 3 inches tall? 3 feet? 3 yards? Could a person stand inside them? I wish we could see a person standing inside the space between the blocks.... photoshop anyone?

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Friday, March 7, 2008 - 06:57 am:

Excellent photos! The first one could be man-made or built by extraterrestrials. (Is that a spaceship off in the distance?)

By Kathyrn Laughlin (Kathyl) on Friday, March 7, 2008 - 07:54 am:

Hi
I have to wonder if the top ice sculture was done by a person; my guess is that the blocks are small enough. It's a beautiful picture in any case.

For the past week I have had a "Wow" Pastycam picture, taken by Greta jones, as my wallpaper. I named it "warm ice", because of the gold tones.

I have a lot of words for snow and ice, but most of them I can't repeat in polite company.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Friday, March 7, 2008 - 08:16 am:

Icehenge, lots of color in both.

"Is it the Inuit who have something like 30+ words for snow and ice?"

Nope, just another urban legend.

See Wikipedia: Eskimo words for snow. Although there are some linguistic issues that would make it seem so — because Eskimo languages are polysynthetic, they describe concepts in compound terms or 'words' of unlimited length.

See also the Conclusion, External links, etc. at the end of the Wikipedia article.

Looks like the breakwater is to the left of the Upper Entrance Light, so the photo would have to be taken facing the direction of the waterway and Hancock. How is the sun setting in that direction (Southeast?!) Is the photo reversed or something?

By Steve Haagen (Radsrh) on Friday, March 7, 2008 - 05:23 pm:

Looks to me that he is facing Southwest, Lake Superior to the right and the canal runs to the left. He would be somewhere north of the light on the beach.

There pictures are chilling to look at. David Riutta sounds familiar, I wonder if he beat me and Donny in a pool game ever in $ Bay?
