When I first spotted today's featured photos in Joyce Tormala's Gallery, I couldn't figure out if the snowpile she snapped at the Jeffers High School was deliberately pushed there or if it had slid off the roof by some other means. After checking with Joyce, the rest of the story came out. It seems there was a "hired crew" up there clearing the snow, but they were unaware there was an exit door underneath where they were pushing the snow off, so the pile there just grew and grew. Once discovered though, it was quickly removed to make the entrance/exit for deliveries useable again. Don't worry, no students, faculty, administration or staff were injured during this event, since the job was carried out during a time when there weren't many out and about at the school and students are not permitted in the area where the door is located.

Joyce thought perhaps this might be a good method to deter B&E, but of course would only be a temporary fix once spring arrives. :->

Normally I would claim early bird status, but in this case, it's night owl status, so I can't say 'Mornin' in good conscience.

So, what is the story of this winter? Is this average or maybe a little above average for snow in the U.P.?

Ah, snow lovely snow ! As a truck driver down here in "Troll" land it is a challange every time there is a new coating. Please slow down.

By dlp (Babyseal) on Wednesday, March 5, 2008 - 08:03 am:

Morning everyone! Neat pics Joyce. Do you carry that camera of yours to work even? The picture of the blocked door looks like the maintenance guys need to get out the paintbuckets! I'll tell my hubby what you are up to while you are covering his job :)
Those pictures show why the National Weather Service set up the weather station in Painesdale. I think I measured every inch of that snow this season.
Go JETS!!!! I'll be there cheering for you at the regional final tonight.

That wouldn't be fun to move out. I think thats what my basement door looks like right now, I'm just going to let it melt.

Hi all
SE Michigan is doing a UP imitation today...you all would say it's a pale imitation though; we got 6-7 inches and the road crews are challenged. "Lulu", I hear you; most people were driving carefully but one guy in a big pick-up evidently thought "Well, I CAN go fast, so I SHOULD go fast".

Being a professional firefighter and at the risk of sounding like the harbinger of doom, looking at the first two photos made me cringe. Seeing the third one alleviated some of my angst. Saying “Don’t worry,…..students are not permitted in the area…” provides no excuse. While doing fire inspections, all exits must pass the “duck” test, meaning if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it must be a duck. That illuminated exit sign instantly makes it an unquestionable duck. I have never responded to a tragic incident to have someone tell me “I thought something bad was going to happen and that is why I did nothing to stop it.” It is almost always “I never in a million years thought this would happen.” We like to use the phrase –predictable is preventable--. It works.

On a different note, it looks as if that wall needs more than a coat of paint. Judging by the heavy staining on the brickwork outside of the door, it appears as though there is a drainage issue. I’m sure gravity directs melt-off and rain to the doorway just like it did the snow.

I’m really not the sourpuss this note might make me sound like. Just trying to make sure everyone is around to enjoy pasty cam for another day. And with daylight savings time coming up this weekend, it would be a good time to check the batteries in your smoke detector. Have a safe day.

We have somewhere between 6-8 inches of fresh snow on the
ground here in Toronto. The school buses were cancelled in
Toronto. Apparently things are worse in Buffalo--their buses have
been cancelled and their schools are closed.

Gary in CO: Don't ever stop doing what you do. My brother is a fire inspector, and he is NEVER off duty. Always on the lookout. Isn't the national firefighters memorial in Fort Collins?

By F.F. (Flipflop) on Wednesday, March 5, 2008 - 11:16 pm:

John W. - I could tell ya how to post a pic, but no one ever does and I've never figured out if its acceptable or allowed ???

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Thursday, March 6, 2008 - 10:02 am:

If the picture adds to the days subject matter, and or if a Yooper will think it's a Hoot, go ahead and post it. It has been done. Try to make it as small as you can. Go to Pasty search archives key word and they tell you how to do it, so they who edit must think it's OK.

By John W Anderson (Wd8rth) on Thursday, March 6, 2008 - 12:32 pm:
