Eight years ago the Pasty Cam caught up with the jolly old elf and a little yooper who reluctantly waved for the Pasty Cam.

Good morning!! We have some furniture like that in the picture. It was made by my Clark cousins in Engadine many years ago.

Good morning all. Well the cold weather made its way here. Welcome home Connie's brave husband! My gratitude and thanks are not enough to pay him and you back, for all these past months. Did you mention his name? I am sure you are making him all his favorite foods. Do they include pasty's?

Good Morning, Everyone!

Good morning! What a cutie!

By Erik Nordberg, MTU Archives (Techarchives) on Wednesday, December 5, 2007 - 07:32 am:

Hello All:

Thought I'd give you an update on the project looking at the history of potato farming in Houghton County.

The MTU Archives has moved its exhibit about the Great Depression and potato farming from campus to the Carnegie Museum in Houghton (this is the old Portage Lake library building at the corner of Montezuma and Huron).

The folks at the Carnegie are also adding some other potato-related content, looking at the role potatoes have taken in our cultural landscape. From their press release "the exhibits hope to take a closer look at the ordinary spud: the local history of potato farming, the potato's natural history, its role in popular culture and its importance as food." Together, the exhibits are going to be referred to as "one potato, two potato."

They plan to keep these exhibits in place through the end of January, and the museum's winter hours are:

Tuesdays 12-7 pm
Thursdays 12-5 pm
Saturdays 12-4 pm

In addition, there will be two special events associated with the exhibits.

The first will be Saturday, December 8, from 12-4 p. m. They are calling it the "Potato Festival" and will include a variety of potato dishes to sample, games for children, and a tour of the exhibits. Participants will get to try potato dishes from various cultures; make a potato print; and vote for your favorite way to eat potatoes!

The second event will be Friday, December 14, 6-8 p.m. I'll give a heavily illustrated presentation on the development of potato farming in Houghton County (probably start around 6:30). There will be light refreshments and this event is designed to key into the Friday night downtown shopping activities Houghton is doing leading up to the holidays.

If you have any questions about my portion of the activities, drop me a line. If you have any questions about the events, or want to participate in any way with the fun, contact Elise Nelson (elisen@cityofhoughton.com) at the Carnegie Museum 482-7140.

The MTU Archives has also added scans of some of the photos from our collection (and some pieces from folks I've talked to recently) to the MTU Archives "Keweenaw Digital Archives" online at http://digarch.lib.mtu.edu/ Try searching for "potato" and see what you get.

Thanks again to all of the people who have helped with this project. Please feel free to share this message on to anyone you think might be nterested in the exhibit or the events coming up in December.

Erik

Good morning it is snowing in Berkley. Guess I will get dressed and fight the snow, all one inch of it with the snow blower. Today is one of the days that I dread. Precious takes half a day off to Christmas present shop. Then she makes me go with her. I think this is spousal abuse on her part.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, December 5, 2007 - 08:34 am:

OH Mikie, you know you'll love shopping for those grandkids.

By Paul Roberts (Grizzlyadams) on Wednesday, December 5, 2007 - 08:47 am:

Just a note to all those locals that have asked where they can get the 2008 calender. You CAN NOT get them at Walmart. There was a miscommunication somewhere and some people were told that they were at Walmart. They ARE NOT. So please don't go into Walmart in Houghton looking for them because you won't find them. Thanks!

Japei, this is beautiful.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Wednesday, December 5, 2007 - 11:05 am:

Good morning. Good luck shopping Mikie, take food so you can keep up!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Wednesday, December 5, 2007 - 12:21 pm:

Awww, Mikie, it's not the end of the world. When I was little, my mom used to drag me around shopping everywhere, for all day shopping excursions "in the city". (We lived in California at the time). She knew that she had to bribe me with food every couple of hours, if she expected me to continue being good so she could shop, and did she shop! I did get some great desserts in the practice, good enough to remember all these years later. Precious could at least let you get a Starbucks or something!

Speaking of potatoes …

That reminds me, one of these days I'm going to have to resurrect a great potato based pasty crust recipe I have buried around here somewhere. It really made a very competent, durable pasty crust! (You absolutely do not want a fragile, flaky pie-crust like crust on a pasty!)

By Erik Nordberg, MTU Archives (Techarchives) on Wednesday, December 5, 2007 - 03:49 pm:

As part of the "One potato, Two potato" exhibit, the Carnegie Museum is soliciting potato recipes.

You should e-mail your recipe to history@cityofhoughton.com and they'll post it as part of the exhibt.

"You should e-mail your recipe …"

The real trick will be to find it any time soon. That's what I get for not transcribing it into my computer archives.

(Organization is not my strong suit. — Unfortunately, "if it ain't in da computer, I can't find it" is the prevailing rule!)

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Wednesday, December 5, 2007 - 04:45 pm:

I'm curious on potato sausage: is it made with potatoes only (ie, no meats)? What about cheeses? I would love to be able to taste it!

By Erik Nordberg, MTU Archives (Techarchives) on Wednesday, December 5, 2007 - 04:48 pm:

The woman at Vollwerth's said it contained meat -- she thought pork, but wasn't sure off the top of her head.

MY PASTIES ARRIVED! MY PASTIES ARRIVED! I hid the A-1 from my son, too! I'm having a breakfast pasty tomorrow morning, then a regular one for dinner! It's pasty day tomorrow!

By Snowman (Snowman) on Wednesday, December 5, 2007 - 06:55 pm:

Alex, be careful, please don't overdose on the pasties. It happened to me and I wound UP getting quite flaky. My family thinks I've had a little bit too much sauce, A-1 that is.

this past weekend. Congratulations to Finland on her 90th
anniversary.

Being a Svenska flicka I can tell you Swedish Sausage(POTATIS KORV) is made with ground beef, ground pork, potaoes, salt and pepper, chopped onions all ground together in a meat grinder. It is then stuffed into a pork gut, tied on ends. We always boiled it a bit and then sauteed in a skillet.
Yum! Also, if you live anywhere near an Ikea store they are serving it this holiday season.
