As the store names and the structures change in downtown Houghton, we'll always be able to look back at how it used to be. At least this was the way it looked 8 years ago.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Tuesday, December 4, 2007 - 05:08 am:

Ah.. the main drag of Houghton. We'll be seeing it in person just after Christmas.

Check out the bio of Ransom Shelden, for whom Shelden Avenue was named. Quite the mover 'n shaker. Cited as being six times wealthier than any other local. (excepting his brother)

Where is all the snow?

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, December 4, 2007 - 08:15 am:

Good morning! I love this picture. You're very lucky indeed, Kosk. We were considering a trip UP there for Christmas this year until we found out that my son needs open heart surgery. That kind of put the damper on anything fun. Have fun.

I remember Houghton the way it was when I was young. So many stores to walk through. I think Ben Franklin was the store that was downtown, and then there was Penney's. Those were the days.

By Connie, Eagle River Alaska (Connie8792) on Tuesday, December 4, 2007 - 09:35 am:

Good morning from Alaska.
It's a wonderful day, my husband is coming home this morning after 15 months in Iraq, wahooooooooo!!!!!!!!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Tuesday, December 4, 2007 - 09:47 am:

I think the official opening of Ripley is this Friday afternoon, Dec 7, at 3 pm.
"For you skiers out there. Ripley will open at 3pm Friday. I threw the skins on the teles this morning after work and hiked a couple runs. The Plunge had drifts up to my chest in some spots (I'm 6'4"). On the ridge at about 3:30am, I measured wind gusts near 45-50mph, until a gust knocked the gauge out out my hands (wet gloves)."

That notice was posted to the Mich Tech Parents (email) List late Sunday afternoon. In the meantime, they are working on the slopes, getting them into the condition that they want them to be in. :-)

Connie of Eagle River, Alaska: I am so happy for you that your husband is coming home from Iraq today! That is so awesome! Please thank him for his service to our country for me. And, thank you for his service, as well, as I appreciate the sacrifice that you and your whole family are making for us all. :-) Hugs, Marianne

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Tuesday, December 4, 2007 - 11:15 am:

Connie I wish you and your husband the best that life can give you. I also thank both of you for serving and protecting us. In 1949 dad packed us all up into the 1940 Desoto that he had painted using moms vacuum cleaner. We drove up to Houghton to Monkey Wards and they purchased a new refrigerator and stove, oh they were just beautiful. The next morning several of us were a little mad because the heat from the old wood stove wasn't there. It was nice to stand by the wood stove and stay warm while dressing. Even grandma and the dog liked standing next to the stove. Later that year we had a real furnace put in the house, oh how wonderful to have heat all the time and not have to huddle by a stove to stay warm. The furnace burnt either coal or wood so my dad had to stoke it every night. The hot water was heated by a pig, that is my dads name for it, in the summer and in the winter the water was heated through the furnace. I would like to just sit next to the register with the dog and read. Years later Precious and I would like to watch the kids get their own registers and huddle on them while reading and watching t.v. and now the grandkids do the same thing.

By Tom (Tom) on Tuesday, December 4, 2007 - 11:33 am:

Deb S. I am sorry to hear your son needs open heart surgery. When will this occur? Let us know please.
My best wishes to him.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Tuesday, December 4, 2007 - 12:52 pm:

Mikie--I remember the days of the wood heat too. It was pretty chilly in the house come morning. We used to hang our school clothes on the oven door to warm them up in the morning.

By Laurie B. (Ratherberiding) on Tuesday, December 4, 2007 - 04:46 pm:

Some of us still heat with wood. Every summer, a logging truck comes in the yard with 10 cords of wood. We cut, split and pile it....every summer.
You can't beat wood heat for warmth. It's not very often that we wake up to a cold house.

Thank you Connie's husband. I'm proud of you.

By Theresa R. Brunk (Trb0013) on Tuesday, December 4, 2007 - 06:19 pm:

How nice of you to ask Paul... It's going great so far. People have been kind to me, and I have tried very hard to live up to their expectations. I am a day tripper now, driving to different municipalities to pull permits and post. I see a lot of the Florida countryside. And I am home every night. Who could ask for more :)

By Charlotte, Mishawaka, IN (Charlotte61) on Tuesday, December 4, 2007 - 09:05 pm:

Connie, so happy that your husband is home from Iraq. Thank him for his service to our country. Thank you for being there for him and the country. May you both have a blessed Christmas.
By the way, where exactly is Eagle River, Alaska? My aunt and cousins live in Nikiski, Alaska. Some day I hope to visit the north lands.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Tuesday, December 4, 2007 - 10:22 pm:

Connie, I'm so glad for you. That 15 months must have seemed
like eternity. My son, who also returned from Iraq in September,
was there for fifteen months too. Whew!!

Deb and Mr. Deb,
I'll be praying for your son.

By Erica - Florida Keys (Erica) on Tuesday, December 4, 2007 - 11:13 pm:

By Connie, Eagle River Alaska (Connie8792) on Wednesday, December 5, 2007 - 12:40 am:

Thank you for all the wonderful messages.
Kosk, I'm glad your son is back home :-)
Charlotte, Eagle River is outside of Anchorage.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, December 5, 2007 - 07:14 am:

Kosk, Thanks so much for the prayers. We can use every one.

Tom, he is 21 years old, born with a bad aortic valve and it now has to be replaced or he will die very young. He has the surgery on the 18th.

Connie, I'm so glad that your husband is home. And please thank him for serving.

Theresa, I'm happy that your job is going well. I've thought about it many times but always forgot to ask.
