If you're a regular visitor to the Bridge Cam view, then you should enjoy this look from the other side. While out and about recently, Robert C. Wetton (alias RCW) snapped an interesting angle of the Portage Lift Bridge looking toward Ripley for a change. I'm not sure if this was early morning or early evening, but no matter which time of day it was, I like the way the lights are glowing under the bridge. Also interesting, is how the photo looks like it's black and white, with just the bridge and the lights colorized, no Photoshop magic involved either.
On a sidenote: You can see that Mount Ripley, out behind the bridge, is covered with snow and from what I understand is now open for the season. On your mark, get set, SKI!

That is a really cool picture, from an angle that we don't see very often! The Lift Bridge is always one of my favorite things in Copper Country. Thank you, RCW and Mary!

By RCW (Rcw) on Tuesday, December 11, 2007 - 08:06 am:

Oh wow, great shot of the bridge. I never get tired of looking at that bridge. I love that it's on the new pasty calendar. I think we should always have it set to that month.

We sat at dinner last friday evening at the ambassador looking out at the bridge.
Only in the copper country will you see Road crews hauling truck loads of snow and dumping in on the bridge and grading it out.
Lower level for the snowmobile trail of course, but it was still funny to see.
By Mel, MN (Mehollop) on Tuesday, December 11, 2007 - 08:39 am:
Bob G - I always wondered how they kept a decent layer of snow on the lower level!
Warming back up over here in MN for a couple days - won't be back below zero until Thursday night. Maybe we'll get some more snow during the heat wave.

They were already hauling snow out of town in dump trucks, will be a good season if it stays like this. Excellent shot of the bridge, but I am also happy to see this one any time.
By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Tuesday, December 11, 2007 - 08:50 am:
I know the crews have some wonderful way of keeping the lower level in plenty of snow, as many times as Bob and I have crossed over on our snowmobiles, never once have we seen the bridge floor.

Just the other day, I was wondering how the snowmobile level of the bridge was managed. Now I know!

Well, after a bit of a slow start, we are finally getting some snow....especially in the mountains! Every ski area in the state has at least a few feet of base, but Wolf Creek Ski Area in southern Colorado is leading the way with a 92 inch base at mid-mountain! The powder hounds are happy! (but you had better bring your snorkle)

It was 82 degrees here in Gainesville, FL today. I was trying to describe to my first grade class the different types of snow....fluffy snow, dry snow, icy snow, wet snow..... Wish I could take them on a field trip across the Bridge and into the Keweenaw!

Any view of the bridge is a great one. Hope you don't get the nasty weather that is being predicted. You have the snow and ice and down here we have another tropical storm brewing!

Oh. Oh. Something new to worry about. Our son happens to be visiting a friend in Key West right now. Tropical storms. Yikes!
By Dan Kemp (Payooper) on Wednesday, December 12, 2007 - 01:27 pm:
The snowfall total on the Keweenaw snow fall thermometer hasn't been updated since December 6th. How can brag about the snow totals without up to date information?
By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Wednesday, December 12, 2007 - 01:34 pm:
You could guesstamate Dan.

Kosk,I just checked the latest on Olga (the storm)and it is weakening but continuing westward at about 45mph. I don't see it as much of a threat to the Keys right now.
By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Wednesday, December 12, 2007 - 05:41 pm:
Thanks, Erica. I'm just home from work. My son did go out fishing and caught lots of fish and plenty of sunburn. Back on shore now.

It's great to see webcam pics of the UP, especially the bridge. My dad's family lived in the Calumet Laurium area. My uncle still runs a funeral home in Calumet, I think? If you "Yoopers" have too much snow you can send it out here to Idaho, WE NEED IT.
Thanks Dave
