This was a pretty typical scene this past week along the highways and byways throughout the northern half of the U.P. at least. Steve Haagen is responsible for providing us with this look down a long, straight stretch of Keweenaw highway. I can't speak for the rest of the U.P. today, but here in the Keweenaw, most, if not all of that snowfall has melted, but it's only a matter of time before our world will be black and white like this photo again. Wouldn't it be nice if the actual roadways could stay bare like this all winter long?

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Monday, November 12, 2007 - 05:03 am:

Yes, it would. I sure hope the roads are clear UP there when we
travel for Thanksgiving.

I would second that motion Mary!!!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Monday, November 12, 2007 - 08:18 am:

That would be wonderful Mary! I don't like winter and that's one of the reasons. I like my highways to be clean. And it seems when we're up there any time during the winter, Houghton Co. roads are always in the worst shape. When my dad was in the hospital in Marquette in Nov. & Dec., the roads were decent until we hit Houghton Co. When we're heading home, they're awful until we hit, I think it's Ontonagon Co. I wonder what the problem is.

Good morning. Supposed to be in the 60's here today.(NE Illinois). No snow yet.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Monday, November 12, 2007 - 08:59 am:

I like driving with the snow on the side of the road, kind of glows at night. It can stay off the road.

By Cathy Kitchen Dittrich (Utahyooper) on Monday, November 12, 2007 - 09:08 am:

I'm looking forward to see lots more of that stuff come Friday. We will be on our way to the UP and can hardly wait for the snow. Yes, I'm crazy, but I love snow and we don't get much of it in the valleys out here in SLC.

By Mel, MN (Mehollop) on Monday, November 12, 2007 - 10:14 am:

Give me snow covered roads with a dusting of stamp sand any day. I can handle that. I hate slushy/salty roads. You never know when your traction is going to go away.

Temps were sitting right on the freezing mark Saturday here, with fresh snow on the roads. It was just wet enough and just cold enough to be pretty close to the slickest surface I've ever driven on. No maintenance trucks out, either. Only saw one vehicle in the ditch - thankfully somebody else had already stopped to help out. I tried to slow down, but I'd have been hard pressed to stop anytime soon. (Which, yes - means I was going too fast for conditions - and was still being passed frequently.) Yikes!

When we are UP for snowmobiling, we are very impressed with the MDOT snowplowing jobs! If you want to drive scary snow plowed roads come to Iowa! Even with a 1 in. covering you could end up in the ditch.

By Uncle Chuck @ Little Betsy (Unclechuck) on Monday, November 12, 2007 - 10:56 am:

Looks like the Lake Linden/Gay Rd. or Mohawk to Gay, where is it Steve?

By Happy to be in the U.P. (Lahelo) on Monday, November 12, 2007 - 11:33 am:

I see from the web cam on the St. Ignace side of the Big Mac Bridge its blustery, foggy and raining and its nice and sunny here in Ontonagon County! Gotta love the U.P.!

By Carole (Carole) on Monday, November 12, 2007 - 02:36 pm:

I thought that this road looks like the Gay Rd. going south to Gay, or as Uncle Chuck suggested, the Mohawk/Gay Rd.

By Daveofmohawk (Daveofmohawk) on Monday, November 12, 2007 - 03:46 pm:

Deb S.: The reason that the main roads in Houghton County are so bad is because MDOT plows them and not the Houghton County Road Commission.

By Steve Haagen (Radsrh) on Monday, November 12, 2007 - 11:54 pm:

Sorry I am late getting back to you I was up working on the cabin all day, it is indeed Lake Linden / Gay Rd heading into Gay. You get the prize Uncle Chuck I don’t know what that is right now but you get it. Just got back tonight and you would be hard pressed to see any snow along the sides of the road there now but soon it will be all white again.
