All over the U.P., whether in the woods or by a stream, you'll spot a variety of new growth, despite the growing season coming to an end. Of course I'm referring to the bumper crop of mushrooms you seem to find underfoot wherever you roam, a result of the recent rainfall in the area. These interesting shots were sent in by Marv and Ellie Hopf, depicting a number of different species of fungi, which seem to be multiplying in numbers. Then they give us a glimpse of the natural habitat that these toadstools call home, this being the Tobacco River, all riled up churning and turning its way out near Gay, MI. If you focus your sights on the base of the tree to the left of the photo, you can see some of the fungus have sprouted there. Talk about a seat with a view!

I am going with the theme from yesterday... My mother used to say " there is a Fungus Among Us" Are any of the mushrooms edible?
I truly love pictures of mushrooms and spores. Maybe it's cause I am still looking for fairies and leprechauns, like when I was still impressionable and receptive to a childlike world. Is that really so bad, to always look for good? Well, anyway thanks for the Fall pictures. I do wish I had a ringside seat.

On way to mqt saturday we noticed the Sturgeon in chassell is at its banks also. Looks like spring runnoff.

A normal year would have me UP north steelhead fishing right now, the bum shoulder says otherwise. Oh well, I can look at the river pic and dream....

I do believe the first three pictures are of Amanita - mostly known as "deadly Amanita", almost a one word phrase. This from the search window on Google for Wikipedia "The genus Amanita contains about 600 species of agarics including some of the most toxic known mushrooms found worldwide."

I think I'll stick with the ones I find in the little packages with the plastic on them from the store.

I love the fungi trio picture. The colors are so muted and the formation so unique. I agree with purchasing the mushrooms at the store as there doesn't seem to be much room for a learning curve if one mistakes a deadly one rather than one which is edible.

My son likes to stomp the mushrooms... Boys.

LOL, Brooke I like to stomp the ones that 'puff' does anyone know what ones I am talking about? I never did find out what those are called.

I am in my fifties and still enjoy stomping on muchrooms. Makes my 7 year old grandson mad. At least one of us is mature.

Puff Balls, when dried out, are just that when stomped. A few summers ago, had a nice fleshy one and grilled it up just like those portabellas. It was almost like steak size.

Interesting pictures of the mushrooms. The last mushroom picture looks like some we get in this neck of the woods when it is wet. I worry about our dogs when those are out.

It is great to see the water flowing again, as long as it doesn't get too high or flood. I got a news alert, I think it was last weekend, that Duluth had Flash Flood Warnings. Also, the article mentioned the rising Lake Superior levels.

I would worry about gathering my own mushrooms. I think it was last spring that a woman out in the San Jose, CA area who had gathered mushrooms for her extended family's meals for over 60-some years, with no problems. And then, she got faked out for a holiday dinner. Several of her family members were hospitalized, and she eventually died from it. It was a sad, haunting, and true story.

I have been married four times. It is sad and makes me look like I am a bad wife. But three of my husbands passed on from eating mushrooms. The fourth husband passed on from a hammer to the head. He didn't like mushrooms.LOL

I think I'd like to meet ki (Kathiscc). I once was unequally yoked and almost used a hammer to undo the yoke. Mushrooms might have eliminated a lot of undesired negotiation$.

I have ancestors who had nine of their children die from mushroom poisoning in 1838.

I was up there last week and it was so nice to see the rivers and waterfalls in full fury. Normally, they aren't that strong except in spring runoff. I guess there has been a lot of rain up there in the past three weeks.

I do like the last picture but must admit to never having been thrilled by mushrooms and such.

My grandpa was a lifelong Yooper. Grew up in Escanaba and raised his family in Iron Mountain before he eventually passed away. Everyone always said he could tell the good mushrooms from the bad ones. He didn't pass the skill on to any of us, and I'm not sure there are too many people left with that skill.
