Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Monday, October 1, 2007 - 06:53 am:

We start the week with a pictorial report on the colors along US 41 from John Sturos. He was recently on a business trip to Marquette and said he had to stop and capture the color just east of the Covington Junction. I have to give him a lot of credit for continuing on to his business meeting then, as I might have had to play "hooky" and enjoy the sights and scents of autumn in the area. I don't know about you, but I can almost smell those fallen leaves along this two-track road :-)

By Jack K (Jackinct) on Monday, October 1, 2007 - 07:12 am:

Oh to be in the UP right now!
Our leaves here on the Connecticut coast are just starting to change but they mostly go from green to brown. We take a trip up to New Hampshire each fall for the color but it's just not the same as you get to see right outside your windows.

By Uncle Chuck @ Little Betsy (Unclechuck) on Monday, October 1, 2007 - 07:26 am:

Can't wait to see those colors, coming U.P. this week with Grampa Norm, and Marty. LB, here we come!

By Therese (Therese) on Monday, October 1, 2007 - 07:40 am:

I'd love to live at the end of the driveway in that top photo, just around the bend, awash in October's color...

By Smfwlk (Trollperson) on Monday, October 1, 2007 - 07:48 am:

Just got back from a wonderful trip UP there - beautiful colors! If you haven't walked the Hunter's Point Trail, make it a point to do so - it was a fantastic experience!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Monday, October 1, 2007 - 07:50 am:

Those colors are beautiful. Most everything here is still green.

By Mike (Upboundeh) on Monday, October 1, 2007 - 07:52 am:

Trollperson, where is Hunters Point Trail? Were hoping to get up to the UP this weekend!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Monday, October 1, 2007 - 07:55 am:

Those are gorgeous autumn pictures, John Sturos! Mary, I am with you on enjoying "the sights and scents of autumn in the area."! The colors here in mid-Michigan are a lot more muted, at least here this year, from what I have seen.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Monday, October 1, 2007 - 08:02 am:

I finally hiked Hunters Point when I was UP labor day. It is in Copper Harbor, access by the docks. That spot would be great with the colors. Hiked the Losee trail in Pinckney State Rec yesterday, not many colors there yet but it was pretty and there are no bikes on that trail so you don't get run over. I will have to do it again next week and see the change.

Here's a link to Hunter's Point map on their Hunter's Point web site.
http://www.hunters-point.org/map.html
Looks like a fun walk and the colors are lovely though today is muted with the overcast.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Monday, October 1, 2007 - 08:10 am:

I know where it is, but where exactly does it start? I have badly arthritic knees and have to save steps as much as possible. So if it's doable for me, I need to park as close as possible and just walk part of it. We'll be UP Thursday and maybe do the Harbor Haus thing Friday. Yup, we drive up there for lunch once a month in the warm months, 1-1/2 to 2 hour drive. We wouldn't drive a half hour for lunch down here!

By F.F. (Flipflop) on Monday, October 1, 2007 - 08:17 am:

T - That was my first thought of the top picture too. I'd love to have a driveway like that. Especially if there was a big ole' garage or pole barn tucked in there also. Maybe a 40 x 40 along with 40 acres. Just got up and I'm still dreaming.

By Dr. Nat (Drnat) on Monday, October 1, 2007 - 09:19 am:

Some say that Hades is seeing the beauty of heaven but not being able to reach it. If that be the case, I am in Hades now. I see heaven in these beautiful photos, but alas, I am stuck in Texas.

Ah, to be walking in the forests and glades of home...

By Anna Roehrich (Updreamer) on Monday, October 1, 2007 - 09:34 am:

I'm with you Dr. Nat. Stuck in NJ is NOT where I want to be! I long to be on the shores of Gitchee Gumee.

By Donald Kilpela (Commodore) on Monday, October 1, 2007 - 09:37 am:

Great pictures, John. Lac La Belle must be beautiful this time of year as well. The road to Copper Harbor has about one more great week before things start to fade. I drive that road hundreds of times and never tire of it, especially in the two-week period of full bloom.

You won't find much color on Hunters Point but getting there is worth it.

By Walter P McNew (Waltermcnew) on Monday, October 1, 2007 - 09:37 am:

yup i remain walter p.

By Cindy, New Baltimore, MI (Cindy) on Monday, October 1, 2007 - 11:24 am:

Wow! How beautiful. Thank you for the gorgeous views of autumn in the U.P. They are very much appreciated by those of us who cannot travel the distance in the fall. It's so nice of you to share your photos with us.

By Smfwlk (Trollperson) on Monday, October 1, 2007 - 12:13 pm:

Mike & Marsha: the trail starts at the parking lot for the lighthouse tours - really keep an eye on the ground when walking, tho, because of the tree roots and rocks.

By Smfwlk (Trollperson) on Monday, October 1, 2007 - 12:21 pm:

Forgot to ask on my previous post - where is George Hite?

By k j (Kathiscc) on Monday, October 1, 2007 - 12:37 pm:

The leaves aren't changing color here(NE Illinois). Gonna be another year of just fall off the trees. Wish I was there.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Monday, October 1, 2007 - 02:14 pm:

I do hope more will share their awesome fall color pictures from UP there, since it looks like an awesome fall for color UP there! Those of us who are not able to travel UP to see it would really appreciate it, pretty please? I really have enjoyed John's pictures today! Thank you John and Mary!

:-)

By JohnS (Jksturos) on Monday, October 1, 2007 - 03:56 pm:

Your welcome, Marianne. I was in your shoes a few years ago. Now, my wife, kids, and I are fortunate to be living back up here in the Copper Country. We took this area for granted while growing up here, but after moving away for a few years, we now try to take advantage of the opportunities we have to explore the Keweenaw and U.P.

By zoegirl (Zoegirl) on Monday, October 1, 2007 - 06:24 pm:

Great picture I found your web site this weekend and was excited to have something from the UP the radio stations are great. I was born and raised in Crystal Falls Michigan. I miss the UP I live in Hamilton Oh.

By Gary Schrebe (Shrub31) on Monday, October 1, 2007 - 10:29 pm:

I'm going to try and get some good pictures next week when I'm in the UP that hopefully I can share with this site. The colors may be past their peaks but I'll see what I can do.

By Gary Schrebe (Shrub31) on Monday, October 1, 2007 - 10:44 pm:

To JohnS, you mentioned about going back to the Copper Country. I agree with you about the beauty of the place and probably not appreciating what you had growing up. I didn't grow up there but fell in love with it at Tech. I will go back there someday to live forever.

By Rob & Pam Schultz (Rpschultz5) on Wednesday, October 3, 2007 - 09:32 am:

Thanks John for the wonderful pictures of our place. We are hoping that the colors will still be there this weekend when we arrive.
