A boat ride to Copper Harbor Lighthouse 8 years ago on this date.

Wow, did we have rain overnight here in the Keweenaw, and lightning, too. I see that two of our wireless access points were affected, the Gay Community bulding and in the Village of Laurium. At daylight we'll get the repair crew on the road.

By RD, Iowa (Rdiowa) on Tuesday, September 4, 2007 - 06:19 am:

Good morning to all current and former Yoopers.

Good morning from Mishawka, IN.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Tuesday, September 4, 2007 - 06:30 am:

Good Morning, Y'all, on this first day of school here in mid-Michigan!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Tuesday, September 4, 2007 - 06:47 am:

I am glad to hear that Copper Country & much of the UP finally got a good rain! Looking at the radar, it looks like it was a good rain. I hope it all soaked in and did not just run off. I have seen a several pictures lately that show that the leaves on the trees were thirsty. Hopefully, that was enough to put out the Sleeper Lake Fire, and reduce the fire danger elsewhere UP there!

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Tuesday, September 4, 2007 - 07:04 am:

Morning, boat looks a little overloaded for me.

By David Soumis (Davesou) on Tuesday, September 4, 2007 - 07:09 am:

good morning :)
Marianne y .. do you live in the Madison area ?
Great place to live, if you do.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Tuesday, September 4, 2007 - 07:24 am:

Davesou, I live in Midland, which is the generally accepted "Middle of the Mitten", and where its name came from. :-)

I agree, Margaret, that boat looks a little overloaded.

By kathie Murto (Murtomania) on Tuesday, September 4, 2007 - 07:31 am:

Good Morning everyone. Well today is the first day of class for all the kids in our area.

By Jill McNamara (Jillann) on Tuesday, September 4, 2007 - 07:34 am:

Hope the first day of school goes well for those celebrating it today. We are into week 4 and pray that the drop in weather holds

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Tuesday, September 4, 2007 - 07:40 am:

Enjoy your rain! Off to school for me.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, September 4, 2007 - 07:43 am:

Good morning! I've been in one of those boats and it doesn't feel overloaded when you're in them.

Beautiful September day here for the first day of school, sunny and 90. Where was THAT in August?

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Tuesday, September 4, 2007 - 08:24 am:

First day of school for my daughter who is in tenth grade. She has a class this year at "zero" hour, which means she has to be at school at 6:30 a.m. This means that mom has to get up and get her walk in just a little earlier...dang, it's dark out there at 5:00 a.m. Good thing there was still a sliver of bright moon.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Tuesday, September 4, 2007 - 08:29 am:

The weather was perfect this past weekend in the Keweenaw, I did quite a bit of hiking and had a blast.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, September 4, 2007 - 08:32 am:

I'd be terrified to walk by myself that early in the morning. Aren't you in Ann Arbor? Better you than me. I won't even walk by myself before daylight out here, and I'm in the country on a dead end road. You are brave indeed Miss Cindy.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Tuesday, September 4, 2007 - 10:08 am:

Cindy would really be in trouble if she were out that early in the morning in Ann Arbor wearing an Appalachian State sweater!!! ;-)

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Tuesday, September 4, 2007 - 10:20 am:

I got some horrified looks when I lived in Ann Arbor and wore my State sweatshirts.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Tuesday, September 4, 2007 - 10:50 am:

I would definitely be sporting the maize and blue if I was out walking in Ann Arbor. My daughter gradutated from there in 2003.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Tuesday, September 4, 2007 - 10:56 am:

Duh! Graduated...I clearly haven't had enough caffeine yet this morning.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Tuesday, September 4, 2007 - 11:18 am:

Ouch, Cindy--first hour is at 6:30 am, or is that before school extracurricular? Our first hour begins at 7:40 am, and 7th hour is over at 3:35 pm, I think. Before school extracurricular is 6:45 am. Marching band practice tonight is from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm. My son is in 10th grade, too. He has driver's ed from 5 to 7, in there, too, 4 days a week. I guess we won't be seeing much of him in Sept!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Tuesday, September 4, 2007 - 11:21 am:

Deb S, my thoughts and prayers are with you, Ryan, and Ron, with Ryan's procedure tomorrow. I hope you get really good news. Hang in there! Best wishes, Marianne

By Happy to be in the U.P. (Lahelo) on Tuesday, September 4, 2007 - 11:21 am:

Nice day for rain here in the U.P.!

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Tuesday, September 4, 2007 - 11:42 am:

My daughter's early class is a regular curriculum class (gym and health) but they hold it before the regular school day starts. I drop her off at 6:30, but the class begins at 6:37 a.m. School gets out at 2:34 p.m. and it starts at 7:40 a.m. She only has marching band practice on Wednesdays from 6:00 to 9:00. No driver training for her yet. Her grades and household chores need to improve before we even consider it.

By Richard A. Fields (Cherokeeyooper) on Tuesday, September 4, 2007 - 12:32 pm:

My daughter had her first day of high school today. Last year she was in 7th grade, this year 9th. I took her to school and sat with her as she waited for a friend to show up. It was like first grade again. She is only 13 and seemed very small as she waited desperately for someone she knew. Most of her friends are back in the 8th grade. Some days are harder to be a father than others.

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Tuesday, September 4, 2007 - 12:42 pm:

cherokeeyooper: I was a middle-school counselor. I'd like to say that your daughter may be academically way advanced, (I assume that's the reason for the jump) but social considerations should not be taken lightly at this age. Of the very few kids we advanced, about half did really well, and half (according to their parents) never should have, never adjusted. She should meet some nice people and find her niche. If she doesn't, however, take her concerns seriously and even consider letting her go "back." Just some friendly advice, please forgive if I'm out of line.

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Tuesday, September 4, 2007 - 12:46 pm:

Once your children reach the age of 16 and the State says they have enough sense to get a Drivers License,up,up,and away goes your car insurance, even if they don't have a license. So you may as well let them have one, even if it's just used for ID.

It is still so hot here in E.TN. in the day, reaching into the 90's. The nights are welcome getting down near 50.

By Tim in Oscoda (Timmer280) on Tuesday, September 4, 2007 - 12:53 pm:

My son, Jeremy, started his Senior Year this morning. He is the top of his class, plays soccer, swim team, marching band, concert band, pep band, every student organization there is, works part time on weekends, and spent eight hours every day this weekend earning his Lifeguard certificate. I agree with Marianne...we'll never see him this year! They grow too quick! Seems like he was just a little guy and now the old man is looking up to look him in the eye! http://gallery.pasty.com/Tbear28/album15/Kids_on_anchor.jpg.html?g2_GALLERYSID=889a24ea42fc94627a46951cd25eee41

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, September 4, 2007 - 08:58 pm:

Marianne, thanks so much for thinking about my son. We have to be there by 10 tomorrow morning. All prayers are more than welcome.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Wednesday, September 5, 2007 - 08:52 am:

Deb and Mr. Deb are on their way to their son Ryan's cardiac catheterization today. Deb asked that you please keep them in your thoughts and prayers today. I can't imagine there is anything more difficult than seeing our babies, no matter what age, in the hospital with tubes and wires and questions. Send lots of good, positive thoughts their way. I'll mention this again when we get Wednesday.
