A few of our leaves here in the Keweenaw have already started turning bright colors, like this oak tree that David Woon spotted at Great Sand Bay. You can see all around it though, there is still plenty of green. The second picture from David gives a better perspective of the color change here, UP North, showing it hasn't progressed too far as of yet. There are some trees along the edge of Great Sand Bay that have turned bright yellow, but off in the distance there's still plenty of green amongst those trees. Folks say the early turn of some of the trees is due to the dryness we experienced for so long. Makes me wonder if the rains we've received over the last couple weeks is enough to hold off the rest of the color change until the first week in October

I will be in that exact spot a week from today. I cannot wait.

We have a few changing down here, have some reds. Hope they don't blow away too fast this year.

I'll be UP the first weekend in October. Hope that works out well for color. I think it will!

Will certainly miss our trek UP to see the beautiful trees this year. Hubby has had a very long rehab with knee replacement. But he's being released today!!!

This is going to sound awful coming from a real Yooper (I don't live there anymore so cut me a little slack!!) but where is Great Sand Bay? Looks like on the way to Copper Harbor. There are so many places to pull off the road. I have no idea what beaches are called what!! I think last summer I may have spent some time on that beach picking pebbles for my new Harbor Collection (jewelry!). I love all the colors and smooth shapes of the stones between Eagle Harbor and Copper Harbor. I was amazed to see how the beaches had changed this summer. The water level affected so many things. Some places that have been covered with beach stones for years were almost all sand! Unreal! I'll be back in November but I don't think the beach combing will be as comfortable as it looks in these pics! What a gorgeous area.

Great Sand Bay - Keweenaw County
It is along M 26!
I do believe it is pretty close to Eagle Harbor.

And it's where you always see the swimmers in hot weather.

By D. Clark (Dcclark) on Friday, September 21, 2007 - 03:52 pm:

Great Sand Bay is along M-26 north of Eagle River... only a mile or two past the Jampot. You'll know you're there when you suddenly find large sand dunes on either side of the road, which is pretty unusual in the Keweenaw!

I couldn't have said it better myself, Dcclark!! ;-)

ditto on that Capt! :-)

Thanks both. :) The colors here in Houghton are starting to turn very bright -- it's almost all yellow, orange, and red outside my front window.

We had some geysers from the storm sewers with the crazy hard rain today.

D CLark....are you the owner or any relation to the people that own the cottage at Clarks Point at the end of the Great Sand Bay??

By D. Clark (Dcclark) on Friday, September 21, 2007 - 08:02 pm:

I sure wish I owned some beachfront property up at the bay! But sadly no... I'm a transplant who spends an awful lot of time hiking and biking. :)

I enjoy red oak leaves during Autumn about as much as I do the
maple leaves. I can never c enough pics of Autumn scenes.
They make 4 such fine photography.
