We've been tracking eight years ago on the Pasty Cam for some time... By August of 1999 this daily feature had become pretty well defined, mainly through the photos of our own staff, most by Jonathan Hopper, who was completing his time at Michigan Tech. After a full day of study, this was one of his favorite spots overlooking Great Sand Bay, about 4 miles north of our home in Eagle River.

What a beautiful place to decompress from school work. Nothing
like that on my way home from work....

Good morning everyone. I have a question for the group. When I was a kid, my Grandma used to make a dish with sauer kraut and meatballs made out of hamburger, ham, and rice called "filina zalia" and I know it's not spelled correctly. Anyone know the correct name/spelling of this dish?

Good morning! I love the shot of Great Sand Bay!

Kenty -- trying looking up something called porcupine meatballs. Mabye be that's what you're looking for. I tried your words in a google search and find nothing close to food.

By Matt Karhu (Matt_k) on Monday, August 27, 2007 - 03:24 pm:

Kenty: If you wrap the meatballs in cabbage leaves and place them in the sauer kraut with tomato juice or tomato sauce, and simmer them until the meat is cooked, you would have what some folks call "holupki".

By Matt Karhu (Matt_k) on Monday, August 27, 2007 - 05:32 pm:

"Holupki" is what Slovaks and some Hungarians call cabbage rolls, "golumpki" is what Polish people call them. The women of these nationalities often claim that their cabbage rolls are the best available, I've eaten cabbage rolls made by women of all three nationalities, all were very good.

I know I don't have the name of that food spelled right. I googled it too. I even checked some Croation Cuisine websites and coulnd't find anything. I believe the correct spelling for the second word is "zelea", which is supposed to mean sauerkraut in Croatian. These aren't cabbage rolls though. The meat balls were about the size of a baseball if I remember correctly, and they were made with ground beef, ham, and rice, with some garlic thrown in to give it some "BAM"!! LOL And they were cooked with the sauerkraut. There's so many different dishes my Grandma made that I only know by name and have never ever seen a recipe for, let alone knowing how it's spelled.

I wish I had a dime for every porcupine meatball I've made. Next to chicken or beef and homemade noodles and pasties of course, the meatballs are my favorite. (Actually there's not much I won't eat :) )The meatballs are ground beef, rice seasonings cooked in diluted tomatoe soup, at least by my reciepe. I mostly cooked them in a pressure cooker, it's faster.

Kenty:

I think this may be one your grandmother made up as she put in a pinch of this and that-perhaps Martha Stewart could come up with an answer from her Polish background-at least her Mother could.

How about those Tigers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, August 28, 2007 - 06:48 am:

Was that a great game or what???????? I dislike the Yankees anyway and to see them get slaughtered like that was terrific, especially by the Tigers. If only the Twins could have done their job.
