Rock Harbor dock on the Pasty Cam eight years ago. August 7, 1999 was also the day WJR Radio did a live remote broadcast from Pasty Central. Even though the Pasty Cam was less than 2 years old at the time, it was already one of the longest running daily features from the U.P., which it remains to this day.

Good morning! We are finally getting some rain down here in the thumb! I hope the eastern UP gets it too, to help with the wild fire up there.

We've been having all you folks' rain up in NW Illinois I guess. Sure wish I could share with you. Much flash flood warnings here near the Mississippi.Had some real dillys go thru lately. But like most of you, the humidity is like breathing in a sauna, just horrible.

Our lawn is starting to green back up after almost 7 weeks of no rain. 1 inch on Sunday and almost 2 inches this morning and the hope of more rain this afternoon. Yea! green grass in mid Hillsdale County.

Miss Deb. S....HAPPY BIRTHDAY young lady. Have a good day even though you have to work!

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Tuesday, August 7, 2007 - 10:50 am:

Good morning, Andrea the Irish dancer, granddaughter of the century and my best friend, placed fourth overall in her contest in Dublin Ohio. Second in hard shoe. I really like to brag about her, and the rest of the grandkids. Hot, stuffy, and dreary here in Berkley. Happy birthday dear Deb. I have to get up early and drive Precious to work, then wait for the rest of the day to pass to pick her up at quiting time. But I still can't get the early bird.

By Fran in GA (Francesinga) on Tuesday, August 7, 2007 - 11:19 am:

My friends and I used to make our own habitats for Polywogs also. We sure had a lot of fun.I have had tree frogs in my yard here. They sure are cute!

Mikie,if you were closer you could supervise while I go thru boxes.

Happy Birthday Deb. Hope you are not as hot and sticky as we are in SE Mi.

By Mooselover (Mooselover) on Tuesday, August 7, 2007 - 03:26 pm:

One item I read on the net said that there are several forest fires burning in the UP. I know about Newberry.
Have there been any in the Keweenaw? I feel like crying whenever I hear about fires like that. I think of all the animals and birds that may be harmed and displaced. No people or houses have been affected so far? I wish to God I could send you the rain we've had in northern Illinois. Some people got 5 inches last night! Is there a website where I can tell what the fire danger is in various parts of the UP? It would be good to know when we visit. Thanks.

By Richard A. Fields (Cherokeeyooper) on Tuesday, August 7, 2007 - 03:36 pm:

Mooselover,
I know there have been smaller fires on the Stonington Peninsula east of Escanaba (about 90 acres on one of them.) Don't worry too much about the wildlife. For the most part, they can avoid a fire unless it is wind fueled and racing. Remember, fire is a part of nature, and some plants need it to reproduce. I am not old enough to personally remember (45), but I am told in the old days when slash burned frequently, the berry picking was always better because the berries need a good burn.

But if you can send an inch or two of rain to Luce county, I bet they'd appreciate it!

Hey everyone, don't forget to tune into the Discovery Channel for the Dirty Jobs show, on the painting of the Mackinac Bridge :) That's 8pm for folks in the central time zone and 9pm for everyone in the eastern time zone.

Ya'll need to congratulate Mr. Deb for his first crossing of the Mackinac Bridge. Cheryl and I were in my truck, ahead of Mr. Deb, leading the way. And yes, the toll booth operators razzed him about his first crossing ;)

Mikie, you have to finish your iniation of Mr. Deb as an honorary Yooper. I baptized him with the Mighty Mac crossing, now you have to do the honors and bestow upon Mr. Deb his honorary Yooper name.

Kay, ROFL. That's tomorrow. I laughed so hard when I saw whatcha did.

Happy Birthday to you tomorrow, Deb :)

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Tuesday, August 7, 2007 - 03:53 pm:

Happiest Birthday to you Deb! I hope the Birthday Fairy is extra good to you! Have some cake for me please.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Tuesday, August 7, 2007 - 04:04 pm:

Happy Birthday to you, Deb, a day early! I hope you have a great day! Also, congrats on your Virtual Early Bird for yesterday.

Mikie, congratulations on your granddaughter's dancing achievements.

We were awakened early this morning (5 am) to thunderboomers, as my sons call them. We need the rain, so we can't complain. :-)

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, August 7, 2007 - 04:20 pm:

No cake for Deb's birthday. Instead she gets a fresh peach pie direct from her front yard one-tree peach plantation.
Mr. Deb

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, August 7, 2007 - 07:31 pm:

Gee you guys, thanks! However, my birthday IS tomorrow and not today. Oh well, it will be the same tomorrow as it was today...work, work, work! Because "I owe, I owe, it's off to work I go". Woe is me.

By Happy to be in the U.P. (Lahelo) on Tuesday, August 7, 2007 - 09:51 pm:

Just watched the Big Mac Bridge on Discovery Channel, show called "Dirty Jobs" IT was very interesting and Mike was up real HIGH. Too high for me, but those folks who work on the bridge cannot be afraid of heights for sure!
The do one heck of a job on it! They have guts and glory for sure!
Mike was on the very top and when they put the light in. He said "and now we have to walk down." The other guy said "we can take the elevator." They obviously didn't tell him about that!! I have to give him credit for doing it. It was filmed around Memorial Day weekend. They said the Bridge was 50 years old.
That was nice to see something from Michigan on national television for a change!!!! Hope everyone had a chance to see it.
