Ginia Blaksley was the guest Pasty Cammist eight years ago today with this family shot. As I recall, that day it finally cooled off after an extended hot spell. It is still hot here in the U.P. today.

Good morning from central Indiana where it's going to be hot again. Have to think about a phone call from a relative stationed in Iraq.....119 degrees over there!

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Wednesday, August 1, 2007 - 08:25 am:

good morning from Blue skies and hot weather here in Berkley. I sure am glad that Precious decided to air condition the house. Jimmie the fat white cat sits by the register just like he does in the winter. Only execise he gets is walking to the kitchen to eat.

Little bit of rambling from David H. this morning. The heat must be getting to him.........:)

By Charlotte, Mishawaka, IN (Charlotte61) on Wednesday, August 1, 2007 - 09:09 am:

Good morning from Mishawaka, IN. It is going to be another hot one here today. Had an email from my nephew serving in Iraq last week. He included some pictures of himself and in the background was a thermometer showing the temp at 120. It was 11:30 am. So 90 or 95 isn't so bad.
Enjoy the day.

Deb and Company--Will we be seeing any of the pictures from the
bridge festivities? Sure wish I could have been there.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Wednesday, August 1, 2007 - 09:57 am:

Just cooled off by checking out the grizzly cam: National Geographic Grizzly Wild Cam Those bears know how to spend the day, just lolling in the rushing water. However, it's only 48 degrees there.

David: We must've been hanging out at the same time, in the same area, as I graduated from Kearsley in '69 (and hung out with Clio kids) and my husband graduated from Clio a few years before that.

Try to stay Cool today everyone. Could reach 100 here in Hillsdale County Michigan and no real rain in site.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Wednesday, August 1, 2007 - 11:43 am:

I have two sons at summer camp this week, plus one in a dorm at MTU that is not air conditioned. I hope they can manage to stay cool today! I'm not that worried about my MTU son because I know he can get to air conditioning, but the other two do not have that luxury. It is supposed to be 98 for one of the campers. It is summer, though. I don't know if those temps there are near the record highs.

It is not supposed to get hot enough here today to break the record high of 101, set a long time ago. We are just supposed to be 95 or high 90's. I heard that Flint might break its record high of 98?

Did you all read the article that mentioned that Copper Harbor set a record high back in the 1920's or 30's with three straight days of 103 or higher! I can't imagine Copper Harbor ever getting close to 103, let alone stay there for three days! It was an interesting and scary article, for sure!

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Wednesday, August 1, 2007 - 11:47 am:

Hello, I do not have AC at home so glad to be at work today. Maybe we will go to the lake after work to keep cool.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Wednesday, August 1, 2007 - 12:07 pm:

Sorry--I'm used to almost all of the homes here being air conditioned now (they weren't when we moved to Mich in 1979, though).

I'm glad that you have options to cool off, like going to the lake. Or you could go to a fast food restaurant or to get ice cream cones, or other places that are air conditioned, to cool off for awhile.

On the bright side, if you don't have air conditioning, your electricity bills should be a whole lot lower! :-) Just be sure to drink plenty of water to prevent heat illness. Do you have ceiling fans, or good window fans?

I hope it cools off when school starts because our schools here in Midland are not air conditioned, at least the ones that my sons have attended are not.

By Eva (Upergal) on Wednesday, August 1, 2007 - 01:03 pm:

Boy is it a hot one again here in Champion!! We're usually colder than others in the winter but hotter sometime in the summer like now! Full moon out last night and was 70 degrees! Beautiful, just couldn't sleep! Would love to jump in a pool right now. i love sauna's, but just have to go outside to have one today! Hope you all keep cool and hydrated!

By stix (Stixoutwest) on Wednesday, August 1, 2007 - 01:13 pm:

Hi all. Been away from the computer for a while. Does anyone know of some good Keweenaw beaches for driftwood collecting? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Our beach has changed dramatically this summer.....the driftwood is gone but must have gone somewhere!
Thanks and have a great day everyone!

By Bruce Tambellini (Btambellini) on Wednesday, August 1, 2007 - 01:26 pm:

It's a hot one in Laurium, Michigan

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Wednesday, August 1, 2007 - 02:18 pm:

I'll trade weather with any one in the UP right now. Last time I checked, it was 96° with a heat index of 112° in Houston. After seeing that, 89° and low humidity in Houghton doesn't sound so bad now, does it?? ;-)

I'm hoping that by the time we get up there it will have cooled off though; I am not a warm weather person.......

By Phyllis Monty (Phyllism) on Wednesday, August 1, 2007 - 05:52 pm:

It seems that it is hot all over the country today - can't wait to get to Eagle Harbor on Monday for the week. Though I don't write often --I follow this page every day. I have noticed that many places have closed up -- the Landing and the Shoreline for example. Is there a good place for breakfast near Eagle Harbor? Thanks

By Happy to be in the U.P. (Lahelo) on Wednesday, August 1, 2007 - 06:00 pm:

HELSINKI - A Finnish squirrel with a sweet tooth heads to a Finnish grocery shop at least twice a day to steal "Kinder Surprise" chocolate-shelled eggs.
"I named it the Kinder-squirrel, after the treats. It always goes after them, other sweets do not seem to interest it as much," the manager of the store in Jyvaskyla, central Finland, told Reuters.
The confectionary, which is intended for children, has a toy inside.

"It removes the foil carefully, eats the chocolate and leaves the store with the toy," Irene Lindroos said.

Unfortunately, the bushy-tailed thief does not clean up after itself, but leaves the wrappers behind, she added.

Squirrels have a well deserved reputation for being clever and adaptable animals. Many a home owner has seen the small rodents raiding their supposedly "squirrel-proof" bird feeders.

By Carole (Carole) on Wednesday, August 1, 2007 - 06:48 pm:

Phyllis, you mentioned that the Shoreline has closed. When did that happen?? We stay there every fall.

By Carole (Carole) on Wednesday, August 1, 2007 - 09:07 pm:

I decided to call the Shoreline and they are opened but the restaurant is closed and has been the last few years. Made my reservations to be there starting Sept. 27th thru Oct. 6th.

A belated Happy B'Day to Sharon Smith!

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Thursday, August 2, 2007 - 07:26 am:

Phyllis: there's no place currently in Eagle Harbor to get breakfast. You will need to run up to Copper harbor, or down to Slim's in Mohawk. I don't know if Fitzgerald's in Eagle River serves breakfast.
