This moment suspended in time in the first photo is a mesmerizing shot. Aladino Mandoli captured the scene really well, with the crisp, blue water up close and off in the distance it melts into a blur. Somehow though, even with the beauty of Lake Superior and her shoreline rocks in view, I can't help wondering if the seagull on the rock - looking up at it's feathered friend - is thinking the same thing I'd be thinking if one was hovering over me? The second shot is a favorite from the Pasty Cam Archives, thrown in at no extra charge :->

By Vicky P (Vickyp) on Friday, May 25, 2007 - 07:09 am:

Thanks for the 'two for one' shots today Mary. I love the blue of the water in the first picture!

Quite the comedian today Mary! I do love that expression though.

Hi
I'm going up north after work and with a little imagination the second picture is of my beach. It makes me anticipate the trip.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Friday, May 25, 2007 - 08:51 am:

I know exactly what the seagull on the rock is thinking....

"Birdie birdie in the sky. Why do you do that in my eye. I will not laugh I will not cry. I’m just glad that pigs don’t fly"!!

By Anna Roehrich (Updreamer) on Friday, May 25, 2007 - 09:35 am:

My 9-year old has a seagull fettish, he's going to love these pictures. Even better, he's going to love seeing the seagulls live when we hit the UP in July. Can't wait!

By Rowdy (Roudymi) on Friday, May 25, 2007 - 09:50 am:

I can just picture that being Jonathan Livingston Seagull gently touching down after his lightening fast pass through breakfast flock.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Friday, May 25, 2007 - 11:12 am:

They are fun to watch, as long as they are not overhead.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Friday, May 25, 2007 - 11:47 am:

I must admit that Jonathan Livingston Seagull popped into my head with these pictures.

Mary, I laughed when I read your part about wondering what the seagull on the rock was thinking!

When I was in college, in the spring during migration time, we had a few weeks when we had to put up with gobs of small birds that invaded our campus. We had so many trees, that we almost could not walk from class to class without an umbrella, and not for rain...This was in Houston, at Rice Univ, Capt Paul & Dr Nat, since you all are near Houston. :-)

By Helen (Heleninhubbel) on Friday, May 25, 2007 - 12:09 pm:

Hey Capt. you could be right......did you learn that little jingel on the boats ??? lol

Take care everyone.....have a safe weekend....God Bless hugs to ya'll

This is totally off subject from the pix today, but I look at the Mt Greeley cam and just wonder how long will this property be allowed to just sit and rot away when it could be used for other purposes. It seems these properties are allowed to decay to a point of never being able to repair them, THEN the light goes on.

I remember when K.I. Sawyer closed down, there were brand new units, all furnished and where never used. Houses with all the appliances left just to sit and rot.

OK, off my soapbox.

Have a Safe Memorial Day Weekend!

Bill

I told this story once before on here, alot of new people found this site since then.
I was in FL.walking with my 1st.wife's father Bob, along the beach.Seagulls were all over the place.I called out,"Gulla gulla, gulla!" Some seagulls came my way.He asked,"what the H are you doing? I said,"checking to see if any seagulls are here on vacation from the U.P.

Cotton: am I remembering correctly that you are in Gwinn? Aren't they doing something at K I Sawyer? I was there about 2 years ago, and some of the former military housing was up for sale.

By Budone (Budone) on Friday, May 25, 2007 - 07:13 pm:

I know they have and are doing things in Gwinn, but there are areas that are still pretty run down

By Dorothy Stewart (Bootjackbabe) on Friday, May 25, 2007 - 07:59 pm:

I can remember the time we were having a cook out at the Hancock beach. Two sea gulls swooped down and took our Vollwerth's hot dogs right off the grill!!!!!!!! They were real pests!!! My daughter is deathly afraid of those birds. She will not walk on any beach that has lots of them. In fact, she hates to eat at the McDonald's at the bridge in Mackinaw because the parking lot if full of them.!!!!

By eugenia r. thompson (Ert) on Friday, May 25, 2007 - 08:47 pm:

Oh, my, I tho't 'they' had made use of all of K. I. Sawyer. What a waste of tax money if they did not put every bit of it to good use!

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Friday, May 25, 2007 - 11:35 pm:

I remembered it like: "Birdie, birdie in the sky, dropped some whitewash in my eye! I won't laugh, and I won't cry, I'm just glad that cows don't fly!" When I sailed the great lakes, some of the fellas called 'em 'flying rats'.

By Becky Edwards (Becky) on Saturday, May 26, 2007 - 03:05 am:

Absolutely incredible as wallpaper to all you gull people - I guess we are a special breed :) Looks like an oil painting - course I had one of his pics before with the gull on the piling with the other flying in.........
