Eight year ago we were passing through Marquette, which by sheer coincidence is also the location of today's Pasty Cam.

Hopefully later today we'll have the May pasty shipping schedule posted, for those of you who have been waiting to place your Mother's Day orders :o)

By john mich (Johnofmi) on Thursday, April 26, 2007 - 04:51 am:

Good Morning to everyone, again
First Post

By Paul Oesterle (Paulwebbtroll) on Thursday, April 26, 2007 - 05:11 am:

Good morning!
We have a friend who refuses to eat Wendy's Hamburgers because they are square!!!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, April 26, 2007 - 06:58 am:

Good Morning, Everyone!

Thanks for an early morning laugh, Paulwebbtroll! That's incredible that somebody won't eat something simply because of its shape!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Thursday, April 26, 2007 - 07:38 am:

Top of the world to ya.....

I can sympathize with Paul this morning; I too have a friend that refuses to eat Wendy's hamburgers because they are square. Me personally, I think they and Sonic have the best fastfood burgers around here in Texas. When the Dr. and I are back in Houghton though, it's Hardees...

And speaking of Texas, yesterday you wanted a summary of SE Texas humidity. Imagine the hottest most steamy sauna you could envision, except your fully clothed sitting in it; that's Houston summertime weather....

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Thursday, April 26, 2007 - 08:36 am:

I prefer Wendy's square burgers. I always feel like I'm getting more meat and it covers more bun. There's nothing worse than getting a bite of only bun....where's the beef???

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Thursday, April 26, 2007 - 09:07 am:

Good Morning, am I the only one who drowned on the way to work. The dust got rinsed off my car though!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, April 26, 2007 - 09:10 am:

That's a great description of SE Texas humidity, Capt. Thanks!

Is the Hardees up there still open? I read that the Hardees chain is closing a number of their establishments. My son likes a drive-in restaurant that I think is near Baraga, that used to be an A&W, but he says this place makes better root beer.

By kathie Murto (Murtomania) on Thursday, April 26, 2007 - 09:53 am:

Charlie and John, you both sure do get up early! Another rainy day here in Rochester Hills. Too bad I am going to miss the very nice weather that is coming this weekend, as I am going to Maui tomorrow for 17 days! ( I'm not excited or anything-haha)

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Thursday, April 26, 2007 - 10:09 am:

The first thing I thought of when I saw this picture on the "What's Up" page was not Wendy's. My first thought was SLUG BUG!

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Thursday, April 26, 2007 - 10:16 am:

Hey, Thumbgardner, how is your husband? Haven't heard from you in a while.

By Danbury (Danbury) on Thursday, April 26, 2007 - 11:32 am:

Gone2long, to really know that you'd have to measure them. I ate at a Wendy's only once and thought the burgers were thinner than others.
They were awfully fat, though, with the grease soaking through everything. Yuk!

Talking of lakers (mainpage), has anybody an idea what laker it was in the Blues Brothers Movie (bridge jump in the beginning of the movie)?

Mary says: Danbury ~ I did a search and found this entry on Wikipedia: "In film, the W.W. Holloway (now since scrapped) is famous for being the lake freighter that the Blues Brothers jump their 1974 Dodge over when Elwood decides to jump the open 96th Street Bridge."

By Cotton (Cotton) on Thursday, April 26, 2007 - 11:36 am:

Now I ask Mikie how can he eat one (or more)of those tiny, gray, square WHITE CASTLE hamburgers??? He told me his one of his favorites is WC. Ugh!!! LOL I'd chose Wendy's anytime.
My Uncle Wally had one of those VW's back in the 60's. a red one just like that one. How they still as loud riding in?

By Uncle Chuck @ Little Betsy (Unclechuck) on Thursday, April 26, 2007 - 11:44 am:

When in Marquette, you do not want a Wendy's when you can have VANGO'S PIZZA, it's the best!

GO WILDCATS

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Thursday, April 26, 2007 - 12:02 pm:

In many of my emails to certain people I have spoken of my love of White Castles and Wendy hamburgers. I have also spoken of the rubes who don't appreciate cusine above their level of gormet food. I wish that someone in the shipping business will take my cousin for a big boat ride on the Great Lakes. She is such a good person she deserves this wish.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Thursday, April 26, 2007 - 12:32 pm:

Wendy's would never be my first choice of cuisine, nor would a hamburger. I always prefer pizza over Wendy's. I love Mexican and Thai and Italian (there's a really good Italian restaurant in Marquette up near campus) and sushi...well, OK, just about everything...and pasties too, with ketchup! Yummm...maybe I'll order some for me for Mother's Day!

Now you're talking, Cindy! You can place that order right here: Great gift for MOM!!

By derek tuoriniemi (Derek) on Thursday, April 26, 2007 - 01:21 pm:

Since burgers seems to be the topic, I had a hamburger aboard the laker Charles M. Beeghly a couple years ago, and I still don't think I'll have have a burger that would be halfway as good as that burger was...

By Robert - CO (Halork) on Thursday, April 26, 2007 - 01:37 pm:

My favorite U.P. burger is from Clyde's Drive-In in the Soo. My Dad says Dorothy's in the Soo made the best burgers, but they closed when I was still a little tyke.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Thursday, April 26, 2007 - 02:53 pm:

Lol, I never said hamburgers/fastfood was my cuisine of choice; I only go there when I have to.

As far as eating in the Keweenaw, we already have our places picked out!! An Ambassador sub and "adult" beverage, Mariner North, DT's on the deck in the evening, and of course, a pasty at The Hut (we're hoping to meet the PastyCam crew ;-)

By Uncle Chuck @ Little Betsy (Unclechuck) on Thursday, April 26, 2007 - 02:54 pm:

Gone2long, the Villa Capri is great as well in Marquette, hard to disagree with a good pasty, or even a 30 Crave Case w/cheese from the ever popular White Castle, Don't write off Togo's for a #16 with hot peppers! Enjoy!

NMU-GO CATS!

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Thursday, April 26, 2007 - 03:01 pm:

Ah, yes, the Villa Capri. I remember going there back in the 70s and thinking I was runnin' with the big dogs. I thought it was the coolest thing that they put a pat of butter on top of the steaks.

By Uncle Chuck @ Little Betsy (Unclechuck) on Thursday, April 26, 2007 - 03:46 pm:

Gone2long, did you attend NMU?

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Thursday, April 26, 2007 - 04:11 pm:

Speaking of 'burgers, how 'bout a Whata'burger in Texas. Not bad and such a clever name! Also a Sonic Burger...

By JARMO ITÄNIEMI (Japei) on Thursday, April 26, 2007 - 04:20 pm:

Don't forget the Superior View (unfortunately now closed ) in Freda

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, April 26, 2007 - 04:30 pm:

I'm glad no one came up with Jack in the Box in Texas! I never got used to that place, but maybe that's me. :-)

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Thursday, April 26, 2007 - 04:30 pm:

No, I actually have a PhD from the School of Hard Knocks. I graduated Magna Cum Laude (I hope I spelled that right). No, I just spent some time in Marquette in the 70s with friends and my job in more recent years took me there as well. I graduated from Ontonagon. My little sister Peggy spent one year at NMU in the early 80s.

By Danbury (Danbury) on Thursday, April 26, 2007 - 04:32 pm:

Thank You, Mary.
I'd never have thought of looking at that article. So the boat went the way of all things on earth. already, despite the fact that, as the article says, lakers do get older than salties.

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Thursday, April 26, 2007 - 07:23 pm:

Got to batten down the hatches here in Union Co.Bad weather for 3 counties with Tornado Warnings.92 mph winds coming

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, April 26, 2007 - 07:34 pm:

I hope you have a basement, David H. Take cover, if you are in the tornado warning area. Stay safe!

By Cotton (Cotton) on Thursday, April 26, 2007 - 09:18 pm:

Mikie, I'll bet there are times you'd like to take me for a boat ride & just drop me off.LOL
I'm glad I'm in the UP, don't have to worry about tornadoes. (or at least not very often)

By Grace M Wetton (Gmw) on Thursday, April 26, 2007 - 09:20 pm:

What about the old A&W in Ripley??? Sure miss that drive-in. Went there every week with the folks as a kid and quite a bit with the hubby. Great super papa burgers.

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Thursday, April 26, 2007 - 09:35 pm:

Wow David take care. We haven't had any tornados yet this spring. Where abouts do you live?

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Thursday, April 26, 2007 - 10:13 pm:

Mary--

How is Kevin? I have been thinking about him the past couple of
days. Hope everything is ok.

Mary says: Thanks for asking, Kosk... Kevin remains at home still, with no "perfect" match for a donor as of yet. Within the next two weeks, the Dr. will be moving ahead with the best match they have found so far, we've been told. As you can imagine, Kevin is anxious to get the transplant underway, so he can get back to living a more normal life and hopefully feeling better once again. Please keep him in your prayers...Thank you! :->

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Thursday, April 26, 2007 - 11:07 pm:

It didn't get to bad here in Corryton / Plainview TN.Union Co.just a little north of Knoxville. However once again just north of here got hit realy bad in Tazewell Claiborne Co.and Cumberland. People are still traped in the wreckage and rescue crews are having hard time getting to them.I'am happy to have my radio scaner back as of tuesday. It was taken by the Cop's back in Feb.when I got in that bit of trouble. After e-mails and meeting with the D.A. showing up at the court weekly, they had no reason to keep it.But that's another story. On the news now showing all the damage. Two Tornado's touchdown in the same path as two weeks ago.Ten people hurt,I haven't heard of any deaths as of yet,and pray I don't.

By Susan Caryl (Gilbsulmum) on Thursday, April 26, 2007 - 11:21 pm:

As for great burgers, it's worth the drive to Flint area for a Kewpee (Halo burger for all you young'uns!). I have a relative who shall remain unidentified to protect her sensibilites, who won't eat shrimp because of their shape....says they look like grubs! Doesn't know what she's missing! :)

By Beverly, San Jose (Beverly) on Friday, April 27, 2007 - 02:57 am:

Has anyone heard how Margaret is doing with all the tornados touching down in Texas. I know she lost her home once, lets hope she doesn't again.
Beverly
