Here's a shot of a famous Keweenaw landmark, but from an angle you don't often see. This is, of course, the Quincy Mine just north of Hancock.

It looks like we will slowly begin crawling out from the deep freeze today, with a predicted high of 20. For most of the last month, it has been single digits and below.

Good Morning!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 06:52 am:

Good morning!

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 07:30 am:

Good morning, Tim is spending the day with me since he has the day off, he really is a good grandson. Keeps me busy with questions. Between him and Jimmie the fat white cat I am busy today, guess I will make some pancakes for breakfast today. Maybe fry some Spam to go with it.

By Charlotte, Mishawaka, IN (Charlotte61) on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 07:47 am:

Good morning from Mishawaka, IN. It is another day off school because of the cold and wind chills below zero. I've mentioned before that our kids walk to school so the higher ups felt this was a day they couldn't walk. Means we will add a third day to the end of school. It also means we have a four day weekend since we have Monday, Presidents Day, off. I will never get caught up this school year. We must pack up part of the library at the end of the school year so the carpet, damaged in the flood of Dec. 2005, can be replaced. Just one more year, just one more year I keep saying that to myself.

Hope everyone has a great weekend.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 08:05 am:

No school here for the holiday weekend, a very easy ride into work without all the school traffic. Still cold but at least positive #'s.

By Rowdy (Roudymi) on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 08:13 am:

OOOO.... fried Spam!

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 08:18 am:

Rowdy you are a man of great taste to appreaceate the delights that fried Spam give. The ambrosia of the meat world.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 08:30 am:

Mikie--My dad would agree with you, but then he likes fried
bologna and bologna stew too.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 09:34 am:

You guys are making me hungry. Cold cereal and/or toast sound disgusting now!

By FJL (Langoman) on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 09:37 am:

"Spam".... Quite a change fron Omaha Steaks hot dogs!!!:)

By kathie Murto (Murtomania) on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 09:40 am:

RACE DAY-UP 200!! I sent some pictures in last night of the sled arriving. This morning is the vet checks and in the early evening is the start up of the race. The Midnight Run starts at 6pm and UP 200 starts at 7:10pm. We plan on seeing the start of the race and then driving to Grand Marias to see the Mushers w/ dogs check in for their check in. I will send in more photos tomorrow. What a beautiful day here in Marquette. And now I see there is snow (imagine that) expected for this weekend!!

By Rowdy (Roudymi) on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 09:51 am:

WAIT just a minute! Vollwerths Hot Dog are the "piece de resistance" against which all else is measured.

By Rowdy (Roudymi) on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 09:53 am:

A food group of the North Beach Diet, if you recall.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 09:53 am:

Joanie, How can talk of spam make anybody hungry? YUCK!!

We're supposed to be about 18 today and in the 30's next week. Can't wait. They said this is the longest cold spell we've had in years and years. I haven't liked it. Going to Grand Forks on Monday. I sure hope it's going to be warm.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 10:05 am:

Do Vollworths hot dogs still have mustard seed in them? If they do I don't want them.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 10:05 am:

Is it true that in Canada you can get a spam-like meat called "spork"?

Sorry Deb, how about liverwurst on rye?

By k j (Kathiscc) on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 10:23 am:

A spork is what you use to dish up spaghetti. A combination between a spoon and a fork.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 10:25 am:

Sporks are available at Taco Bell to eat with.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 10:47 am:

So what we now have are sporks and foons? What is this world coming to???

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 11:03 am:

Thank you Deb S: I'm glad that I'm not alone. We had canned Spam so much when I was little, and I hated it the way my mom fixed it...

I did like her fried bologna a lot better.

Our temperatures here in mid-Michigan are a like a yoyo--today we have a high of 23, tomorrow 27, then it drops to 19 on Sunday, Monday up to 29, &, if we are very lucky, we will hit freezing on Tuesday--woohoo!!!

In the meantime, it is 14 now with a wind chill of -1. I'm looking forward to Monday & Tuesday. I hope we don't end up with ice on Tuesday, though, since precip is in the forecast.

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 12:07 pm:

I never seen a Spam while hunting.Heard they are fast little buggers and hard to catch and put in the can.I think they are tasty little criters however you cook um. I'll have a peanutbutter and onion sandwich for lunch.Peter Pan peanutbutter has been on the News making folks sick around here.

By Smfwixom (Trollperson) on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 12:28 pm:

I like regular Spam (cold or fried) and Turkey Spam is good, too. Fried bologna sandwiches - yum! Maybe I'm weird.........

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 01:22 pm:

Since our last discussion on liverwurst I have tried Koegel's liverwurst. It's a very close second to Vollwerth's. One of my cats likes it a lot. He must be able to smell it because he gets crazy when I get it out of the fridge. He clearly has good taste too.

By Tom Karjala (Tom) on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 01:32 pm:

In Hawaii Spam is a preferred meat.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 01:34 pm:

My son's cat, "Swee-pea", is a very special cat. For breakfast he always has a big bowl of "Mice Krispies" while listening to the "Sound Of Mewsic".

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 01:48 pm:

Umm - a peanust butter & onion sandwich sounds worse than a peanut butter & banana sandwich. But, peanut butter & bologna on toast (that was one of my mom's favorites), isn't bad.

I heard that Peter Pan peanut butter from the apparently affected lot numbers has been found in at least 40 states so far, including Michigan. We use Jif at our house, so that's one less thing to I have to worry about.

By Lorelei (Lorelei) on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 02:27 pm:

Me likes spam on the grill;)

By Daveofmohawk (Daveofmohawk) on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 02:56 pm:

So much for our mild winter. The water company called this afternoon and told me to leave my water run until further notice. That's only the 2nd or 3rd time in the 18 yrs. that I've been in this house.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 03:34 pm:

The Sound of Mewsic is a purrrrrfectly wonderful movie...it makes me paws to conclude that it is in a cat-egory all it's own.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 03:48 pm:

So when the waitress brings us our spam and eggs do we say, "Spam, wham, thank you maam"?

Oh, "Swee-pea" is also crazy about the rhyme, "Three Blind Mice".

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 04:17 pm:

Dave, what about heat-tape or is that a joke when you're that far north? It worked for my son. The only problem was the pipes were in a crawl, and I mean crawl, space. They were hard to get to but he got them wrapped and so far so good.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 05:02 pm:

One more question about spam; when you use bread, cheese, lettuce, tomato and mayo with it, is that called a "spamwich"?

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 05:02 pm:

In honor of Joanie's jokes, I have to tell you this story. I was reading some of her jokes to my 9th grade son, Jonny last night. After awhile, I started coming up with my own jokes. (First, you need a little bit of background--if he is not happy with someone, he tells them, "You're a quack", or "he's a quack" or something to that effect.) Last night, after midnight, he was still working on his homework, sitting there eating Animal Crackers.I looked at him, with a big grin on my face, & told him that he was full of "quackers"! He didn't get it for a few seconds; I had to end up reminding him what he was eating. Then he groaned, & decided that Joanie was rubbing off on me. :-)

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 05:48 pm:

Yeppers, life is way too short and we gotta have some fun! What would you rather talk about; Religion? No! Polictics? No! The weather? Sick of it! How about absolutely nothing? Yeah!!!
Talking about absolutely nothing is good for the soul - - - you don't have to stress your brain!
Gotta go, making spamwiches for supper and boy oh boy it's making me want to "oink"! But then I am a big pig.
Relax Pasty Cammers and just enjoy!

By Vicky P (Vickyp) on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 06:26 pm:

Gotta love the spam and fried bologna! I don't get the peanut butter and bologna though - how does one even discover these might go together?? Speaking of the Peter Pan peanut butter, I saw someone on the news on TV saying she liked peanut butter and ketchup on crackers - again, how do you possibly find out these are good together!?

By Cotton (Cotton) on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 07:27 pm:

I have a recipe for Spamburgers. All it consists of is ground up spam, onions, green pepper, mixed with melted cheese, butter & a little catsup. Put the mixture on half of a hamburger bun & bake for 15 minutes on 350 degrees. They don't look so appealing but are delicious.I got the recipe from a lady from the Tamarack City Women's Club many years ago. She served them after a meeting. My kids just love them. I make them when I know we're having everyone for a visit.
As for peanut butter, my son in laws family eats peanut butter sandwiches with chili. One of my kids liked peanut butter with brown suger sandwiches.I remember, Laura. LOL

By timd (Timd) on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 07:30 pm:

I agree with my sister spam, YUCK!!!!

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 08:08 pm:

I have never had spam, not sure if I want to. My son likes me to but cheese between 2 slices of bread and microwave it, that is very hard to do without gagging. Nuked cheese not grilled cheese.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 08:38 pm:

If I remember right, both the peanut butter & banana combo & the bologna & peanut butter combo were favorites of Elvis. I was too young when my mom started serving the latter combo at home. My mom was definitely not an Elvis fan, so I don't know where she got the idea, but it was a somewhat popular food of the times.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 08:38 pm:

Mikie is right, Spam Is one of the "preferred foods" of distinguished diners everywhere. Also, peanut butter and Miracle Whip.
Mr. Deb

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 08:46 pm:

Cotton--your recipe sounds good, if you just substituted something like canned salmon for the Spam.

Doesn't Spam have an annual recipe contest, for new ways to use Spam? I thought I read that, but maybe it was just for a certain anniversary of spam?

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 09:24 pm:

I'm hoping against hope that my father, who just got out of the
hospital after a bout with pneumonia, is able to read these posts.
It would cheer his heart to read all of these spam testimonials...

In case he hasn't been able to re-find this site, I will try to find it
for him tomorrow when I visit him in Lower Michigan.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 09:35 pm:

kosk--my thoughts & prayers are with your father for a speedy recovery from his pneumonia! Pneumonia can really sapp the energy out of you in a hurry!

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 10:04 pm:

My Mom used to make us fried Spam sandwiches, I loved 'em. Still make 'em almost every week. Peanut butter and mayo makes a tasty treat, also. I used to turn the handle of the meat grinder when mom made ground bologna (only Vollworth's!) for sandwiches. Sometimes sweet pickles were added, sometimes dill pickles. Mmm Mmm, good!

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 10:07 pm:

For quick 'grilled' cheese sandwiches, I just toast two pieces of bread, a little oleo, put a couple slices of cheese in the betweens and pop it in the microwave for a short time, just 'til the cheese starts to melt. Quick and tasty!
You're welcome. :o)

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 10:12 pm:

I only bought one can of turkey Spam. Didn't care for it. Got a can of some kind of 'luncheon meat' stuff once, also. An imitation Spam, no doubt. Never again. :o( OK, I'm finnished now. TGIF = Thank God I'm Finnish.

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 10:39 pm:

Grilled peanutbutter and banana is a favorite of The King.Elvis eats them still today in Kalamazoo MI.Cotton,I have had them that way on a hot dog bun, very good. You would think if one eats spam they also would love liver cheese, liverwurst, and potted meat.Yuck! However, I love beef liver and onions.Often when Barbie makes chile I put it on mashed patatoes. We went to the All Amercian Steak and Buffet in Knoxville where I had a medium rare, with porta-bello mushrooms, and some fish, and pie and cheese-cake,washed it down with sweet-tea.That was at 6:00 pm.

The Quincy Mine is always nice to see.The photo on the other Cam notes page today was realy something to see.Good nite, time to take my zocor.

By tom ghering (Tomgheringtcmi) on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 10:46 pm:

Lettuce peanut butter and Hellmans Mayo sandwitches are tops. Also Spamburgers with cheese..In the morning try chili on toast for breakfast....you can put an egg on it too.

By Suzy Lofquist (Suzymn41) on Saturday, February 17, 2007 - 12:11 am:

My mother-in-law (from South Dakota where Spam is/was really big) made a great Spam casserole with ring noodles, little Spam cubes and Velveeta cheese(?)
cubes tossed with chopped onion, pimiento and I believe a sauce from one of those creamy Campbell soups that are only good in casseroles. Since this is Minnesota I believe the term is hot-dish. Yum!

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Saturday, February 17, 2007 - 12:45 am:

Cotton, My Dad used to eat peanut butter with chili also, must be a family thing. I was just telling Precious about it the last time I made chilli, her comment was the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, whatever that means.

By Beverly, San Jose (Beverly) on Saturday, February 17, 2007 - 02:02 am:

Spam is the worst tasting edible stuff sold in a can. Anybody know what the contents of the can contain, looks like all fat? Blah! Yuck! Phooey!

By Cindy Barga (Hoosiergirl) on Saturday, February 17, 2007 - 06:39 am:

SPAM- some parts are meat. My mom used to fry it for sandwiches when we were little. I have not eaten that stuff since. Just the thought of it makes my stomach turn.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Saturday, February 17, 2007 - 07:46 am:

How do you people find out that some of these "taste treats" even go good together? Who in the world would put them together in the first place? I'm sitting here reading this stuff and gagging. GROSS!!!! Peanut butter & chili? SHEESH!!! And grilled cheese are bad enough without making them with oleo in the toaster and microwave! You make them with butter on top of the stove. My mother used to make my brother peanut butter, banana and sugar sandwiches. Who would even think of that? I'm done as I have to go to the bathroom and throw up!!!

By Danbury (Danbury) on Saturday, February 17, 2007 - 08:31 am:

Beverly, how could you?!? :)

Sorry, but "distinguished dining" and "canned food", that's a contradiction in terms, so until Dave manages to hunt some of them to prepare for us, no distinguished dining on Spam.

By k j (Kathiscc) on Saturday, February 17, 2007 - 10:17 am:

I agree with Mr. Deb- peanut butter and Miracle Whip. Didn't Elvis also put bacon on his grilled pb & banana? Don't like spam. What's even worse, tho, is corned beef in a can.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Saturday, February 17, 2007 - 10:24 am:

And corned beef only gets worse when you add cabbage to it.
Mr. Deb

By k j (Kathiscc) on Saturday, February 17, 2007 - 04:17 pm:

I like corned beef, just not from a can.

By k j (Kathiscc) on Saturday, February 17, 2007 - 04:19 pm:

Oh and try a little butter and white vinegar and on the cabbage.

By Beverly, San Jose (Beverly) on Saturday, February 17, 2007 - 04:26 pm:

Danbury: Didn't you say you like the taste of jam and pickles together. I guess that must make you a person of informed and discriminating tastes. Only in Germany. Do they serve them as a side order? :)

By Danbury (Danbury) on Saturday, February 17, 2007 - 07:23 pm:

Strawberry jam and salami, not pickles. And I never said that was distinguished. More like "aquired taste" - in polite company. :)

By dlp (Babyseal) on Saturday, February 17, 2007 - 09:39 pm:

My hubby talks about taking pickle sandwiches to school for lunch. Homemade pickles on homemade bread. He loved them so much he wouldn't even trade other kids for their sandwiches, be what they may.
