This scene from eight years ago could have been taken yesterday. With more than two feet of snow in the last week (as measured at the Keweenaw Research Center at the airport), the trees bear a heavy burden these days.

Good Morning from San Jose. Are you still in a deep freeze in the Copper Country?

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Thursday, February 8, 2007 - 07:12 am:

I love snow pictures. That one is almost as neat as yesterday's.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Thursday, February 8, 2007 - 07:47 am:

Good morning; I promise no white moose today!! :P

Although as I was driving out of my neighborhood this morning, someone's house suffered the curse of the pink flamingo last night!! There must have been 300 or so of those things in the yard, the trees, on the car, etc...

By Therese (Therese) on Thursday, February 8, 2007 - 07:48 am:

Ah. a walk in the snowy woods! It is snowing here again, big clumps sifting out of the floury sky. Think I will go for a snowshoe walk in the woods before the wind picks up later as it will.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Thursday, February 8, 2007 - 08:26 am:

if this is global warming I would not like to see global freezing.LOL

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, February 8, 2007 - 10:39 am:

Speaking of pink flamingos, I've heard those are becoming or are about to become an endangered species. :) Seriously, the manufacturer of them was supposed to go out of business in late December, or something to that effect. There was talk of a possible buyer for it, so maybe that transaction went through. It would be kind of sad if you could not get pink flamingos for pranks anymore.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, February 8, 2007 - 10:45 am:

Hooray--we have a temporary warmup, of sorts. Our overnight low was actually above zero (+6), for a change. But, it's supposed to get colder again this weekend, I think. Anyway, today at least we get to see 20 for a daytime high!

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Thursday, February 8, 2007 - 12:06 pm:

Marianne, you are just so "slick" with your posts, you should have become a news commentator!

By Tom Karjala (Tom) on Thursday, February 8, 2007 - 12:06 pm:

David H. there was a good interview with Dick Armey in our newspaper. It is a news release out of Washington D.C. Thought you might find it in your paper-------editorial page. ?
Who remembers the plows they had around 1950? Huge monstors with two wings. When it camea down the road it opened the road and knocked the snow banks back in one run. When walking to the bus stop that was the last thing we wanted to meet. Had to crawl far off the road. It would be dark and the driver would never have seen us if we didn't get out of the way.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Thursday, February 8, 2007 - 12:22 pm:

Hello all, finally warming up to be a slow freeze instead on frozen on contact. Should be close to twenty today SE MI.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Thursday, February 8, 2007 - 12:22 pm:

Where's flamenco, cha-cha, rumba, samba Cindy today? (The flamingos made me think of you!)

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Thursday, February 8, 2007 - 02:10 pm:

Estoy aqui! I am here! Just been readin' everyone else's posts today. I really enjoy doing that. I like the idea someone had of having a pasty cam get-together some time. It would be cool to meet everyone.

By Uncle Chuck @ Little Betsy (Unclechuck) on Thursday, February 8, 2007 - 03:01 pm:

Is the Lac La Belle Resort and the Mariner North open for business during the week?

By Steve Haagen (Radsrh) on Thursday, February 8, 2007 - 04:20 pm:

Uncle Chuck yes and yes, I know that the Lac La Belle Resort has a web site you can check out and I think that Mariner has one also. I know that Sharon Smith goes to the Mariner on a regular bases both week days and weekends. I just looked and you can get to both web sites from the left side of the home page.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Thursday, February 8, 2007 - 04:49 pm:

Cindy, a Pasty Cam get-together would create a lot of people that might be; crusty, porky and well seasoned! I would love it, 'cause I'm all three! Hey, we should invite Derek and use him as the "main course"!

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Thursday, February 8, 2007 - 05:28 pm:

Well, got Joey his "Yooper" boots today, glow-in-the-dark orange. Put them on his feet, he tried his best to chew them off, took him outside and he wouldn't move. I looked at him and said, "Joey, I know they're ugly, but, you just can't be cool if you're cold!" Just then four doe ran in the yard, looked at his boots, snorted and left. Joey looked at me as if to say, "See, told ya, they couldn't figure out why I had carrots on my feet!" Life goes on.(sigh)

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, February 8, 2007 - 06:30 pm:

I'm sorry, but not surprised, to hear that Joey isn't very happy about his "Yooper" boots. They will take some getting used to, which may take a little time. Now, I bet that he might get used to them in a hurry if he saw a squirrel or a bunny to chase! :-) I bet if you dangle a treat in front of his nose as you walk along, he will start moving in them in a hurry, I bet, particularly if you give him tiny pieces along the way. Some dog handlers will carry small pieces of cut up hot dogs for "bait" in the show ring. You might see a little bit of that if you watch the Westminster Dog Show on Mon & Tues nights on TV. Or, those dogs might be baited with liver treats (or whatever best turns each particular dog on), but they will be baited, that is a given.

Seriously, though, boots aren't just for Yooper dogs. Dogs in New York City should wear boots to protect their feet because the sidewalks are salted, and sled dogs wear them to protect their feet from the brutal snow & ice, just for starters.

Sorry I didn't proof-read my first posting in Cam Notes today very well. I seem to have my laptop computer too far away for my aging, near-sighted eyes this evening. If you need or want something clarified, please let me know on this page, since I have used up my allotted postings on Cam Notes for today. Sorry.
