A long scar, but a healed wound. GROUNDHOG DAY proclaims that we have reached the palace of wisdom on our bumpy road of excess!

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Thursday, February 1, 2007 - 07:01 am:

Good morning everyone :) Finally got the furnace running last night...so I'm happy to report that it is actually colder outside this morning (20 degrees) than it is inside my house ;)

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, February 1, 2007 - 07:22 am:

I'm really glad to hear that you got your furnace fixed! I hope it's 20 degrees warmer inside. At this point, a 20-degree difference would not be enough for me to be warm. Did they say what was wrong with your furnace? I'm curious--who fixed your furnace, your husband or a contractor? :-)

Get warm & stay warm! :-)

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Thursday, February 1, 2007 - 08:20 am:

I heard on our local downstate news this morning that they may declare parts of the UP a disaster area (economically) because of the lack of snow. Anyone heard where these areas are?

I hear Minneapolis is in for colder temps than we are this weekend. It'll be plenty cold here this wkend and then Minneapolis will send their temps our way!

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Thursday, February 1, 2007 - 08:27 am:

The Early Bird sticker looks good over your name Marianne! We have a dusting of snow here in Knoxville, got to allow extra time for the car to defrost,as I have two appointments this morning.Must drive with extra care,I know.Hope the others do the same.

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Thursday, February 1, 2007 - 08:52 am:

Mary Drew: thank you so much for posting the acceptable use policy. It came late yesterday, so a reminder might be helpful.

By Charles In Esky (Charlesinesky) on Thursday, February 1, 2007 - 08:59 am:

Here is a note for Marsha: the areas hit hard by the nice warm
weather we had thru mid-Jan. in the U.P. are those areas along
Lake Superior which depend on skiers and snowmobilers from
downstate, Chicago and Milwaukee to come up and use their
places while they play in the snow. I would think they are doing
well now, but the Xmas-New Years period must have been a
bummer for those tourist facilities.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Thursday, February 1, 2007 - 09:05 am:

I LOVE to see the deer. I can usually spot them when no one else can. A friend of mine says I have such a good eye for them I could probably find one in downtown Lansing. It's like a special treat to see them up close. I saw two last night just about this size snacking on the side of the road as I was turning the corner in a rural area north of Lansing. I stopped and told them to get away from the road. :-)

By Pennie (Trolldiva) on Thursday, February 1, 2007 - 09:15 am:

I enjoyed the chatter yesterday on Pasty. It was nice to see some people that havent posted in awhile. Glad to hear that Renee has her heat back. Nice to see Cotton, she doesnt post to often. Now if we could just get Mikie in there...

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Thursday, February 1, 2007 - 10:02 am:

Yep, the chatter yesterday was fun. What a shame some people didn't enjoy it.

Check out this website honoring President Gerald R Ford, a Grand Rapids, Michigan, native. Have a tissue ready.

Maija, where is your email address?

By Sharon I. Smith (Sharons) on Thursday, February 1, 2007 - 10:35 am:

Apparently the Copper Country is tops on the list of disaster areas, and we're all hoping the help comes through.

Charles in Esky - WRONG! Even though we're beginning to get some snow up here, yesterday when I came through Copper Harbor there were maybe six cars and a dozen snowmobiles at the restaurants. Apparently nobody has gotten the word that we HAVE snow and they're staying away in droves.

Also, remember that when you're in a tourist business, you can never recoup the money you lost last month.

My friends in the business are just refusing to talk about it.

On another subject - please excuse the camera. I had a catastrophic computer failure yesterday, and it will be down for some time.

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Thursday, February 1, 2007 - 10:39 am:

Let's not behave to much, some of us have reputations to uphold. We can use personal e-mail to chat with each other, if you have it so it can be seen, even if we never met in person, as long as you have eaten a pasty, want to eat one,or just smelled one,we are all family on here.I'am not on here to find me wife number 5.Just to iner act with good people from the U.P.My Barbie used to worry about me on the P.C., as we know some who use it for unmentionable things.
One more place to go in Knoxville, just got back from Maynardville and saw about 100 wild turkeys,I just took the camera out of the car.I like deer too and i'am going to put my deer i shot with camera up for my profile today.

By Liz B (Lizidaho) on Thursday, February 1, 2007 - 11:37 am:

Today would have been my mom's 80th birthday.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Thursday, February 1, 2007 - 11:50 am:

Glad to hear the heats working. David, my Mom is also in Tennessee and mentioned the had southern snow (dusting here). She had do drive to work in it unfortunately.

It's a shame the lack of snow has made it such a hard winter, I have friends with sleds who had not been able to do their usual trip between the holidays. Many parts of the state have been hurt by it.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, February 1, 2007 - 01:18 pm:

Thanks, David H. I finally got my first Early Bird sticker! It looks like I just got it by a hare (smile), though! I came close several days last week.

I enjoyed the chatter yesterday, too; it was fun. I agree with Joanie that it is too bad that apparently a few didn't enjoy it.

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Thursday, February 1, 2007 - 01:35 pm:

joanie, I will email you.

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Thursday, February 1, 2007 - 01:52 pm:

Hi, all,
Please do not assume I didn't enjoy the chatter! I can zoom thru anything I don't want to read. I love Joanie's jokes, and have benefitted from sur5er's posts more than once, etc.,etc. Some objected to the Betsy folks' tale, but I loved it.

I just think we should understand the monumental task our editors take on for us. On the memorial page this week, for instance, a person put something completely inappropriate, which I have no doubt was meant for the What's UP page. I saw later that it got deleted. One of the editors had to be reading all the posts to find that. I also NEVER want to see another occasion where one person is attacked negatively by several people.

The acceptable use policy is quite clear and all agreed to it upon registering!

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Thursday, February 1, 2007 - 02:11 pm:

You can please some of the people some of the time, but you can make things miserable without much effort most often.Just got back from Knoxville. Not many out on the roads, which are wet still, the temp is a tad bit over freezing, sky is gray, i am in for the day.Barbie and daughter went out to look for a sale on TV's.Both ones we had went ca-pooy with in weeks of each other. The newest one was 7 yrs old.So will listen to radio,Rush Limbaugh on WNOX 100.3 Got to have a TV to see the Bears win.If Barbie will let me watch! She didn't tell me she didn't like football until it was to late!My 5 th.women is going to let me,cause i'll have her sign a pre-nup.My other women left me after eating some bad mushrooms.Barbie don't like mushrooms!Well enough nonsense will sit back and think of a topic to post to get some dander up.I'll be in the chase for Early Bird come morning.

By kathie Murto (Murtomania) on Thursday, February 1, 2007 - 03:14 pm:

Here is one for the records, just heard from my son who lives in North Carolina, they got 1 1/2 inches of snow and CLOSED everything due to the weather. Schools, stores, restraunts, etc are closed- too much snow on the roads! They sure wouldn't make it in the UP!

By Cotton (Cotton) on Thursday, February 1, 2007 - 04:01 pm:

Guess someone could ask Dave how many times have you been married & he might say "TOO MANY" LOL Sorry for the chatting & whatever I did to offend people. Didn't mean to stir up things yesterday. I was voicing my opinion on something. Any one who knows me would say I wouldn't do that on purpose. Guess I'll just sit back & observe Pasty from now on. Sorry Mary,Charlie & fellow pasty viewers.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Thursday, February 1, 2007 - 04:19 pm:

Cotton, no way did you do anything to offend anyone!! Trust me, it was probably me and I'm sorry if I offended anyone. Don't you dare sit back all by your lonesome, join in on the fun!

By Fran in GA (Francesinga) on Thursday, February 1, 2007 - 05:26 pm:

Liz, good thoughts are going your way.The first year is rough isn't it. It will soon be 2 yrs since we lost Hal. Know I am thinking of you.Fran

We got about 2". The roads are pretty much bare but my backyard is still white. It is nice to see things look so fresh and clean. Fran

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Thursday, February 1, 2007 - 05:28 pm:

I don't think anyone offended anyone. It was just a friendly reminder from our editors about the rules for this site. Could have come on any day.

By Uncle Chuck @ Little Betsy (Unclechuck) on Thursday, February 1, 2007 - 07:32 pm:

Hey Maija! how's my neighbor? The "Betsy Tale" was my attempt to show our love for the U.P., tell some of the crazy things we do, and maybe make someone smile, I too did not want to offend anyone. Cannot wait to get back U.P. to God's Country!

By Betty Paull Colborn,AZ (Betty) on Friday, February 2, 2007 - 12:15 am:

I also enjoyed the 'chatter' yesterday. If someone doesn't want to read it all they have to do is scroll down to what they want to read. I hope all the ones that wrote on here yesterday will keep doing it. I don't write on here much but I can't go to bed till I read 'pasty cam'.
Please keep the neat 'chatter' going.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, February 2, 2007 - 07:57 am:

Pennie, Mikie does post sometimes. He just gets mad when he doesn't get the early bird sticker after getting up early. LOL

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Friday, February 2, 2007 - 08:09 am:

Awwww, poor Mikie, maybe he'll get it today!!!
