This shot from eight years ago shows the sledding hill at the Swedetown Recreation Area, just south of downtown Calumet. Calumet Township owns the area, known for its 25km of cross country ski trails, along with snowshoe trails and, in the summer, mountain bike trails. The trails will host the Great Bear Chase cross country ski marathon in March--this year, with a finish in downtown Calumet.

Mornin'

By Happy to be in the U.P. (Lahelo) on Tuesday, January 30, 2007 - 06:24 am:

Good morning from a very chilly Ontonagon!

By P.Weed (Pweed) on Tuesday, January 30, 2007 - 06:33 am:

Cold here in Florida too! Only 39!!

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Tuesday, January 30, 2007 - 06:39 am:

Lahelo, how cold is it? It is 9° here in the thumb.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Tuesday, January 30, 2007 - 06:43 am:

Good Morning! It's 10 here in mid-Michigan.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Tuesday, January 30, 2007 - 06:47 am:

Now, that's a sledding hill! I don't see any trees around.

In the last couple of weeks, a teenage girl near Frankenmuth and a 3rd grade girl near Traverse City were both killed in sledding accidents caused by loss of control, crashing into trees.

By P&G, New Yoopers (Gormfrog) on Tuesday, January 30, 2007 - 07:03 am:

There are a lot of emotions associated with GROUNDHOG DAY, feelings of spirituality.
We hope that they can be carried around with us throughout the rest of the year,
shaping the way, inspiring the work yet to be done.

Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, January 30, 2007 - 07:09 am:

Morning! Don't know what the temp is, but you can just tell it's really cold. I don't care for winter.

By jmac (Jillann) on Tuesday, January 30, 2007 - 07:38 am:

Temp is 5 in western Illinois and I really don't care for winter either!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, January 30, 2007 - 08:10 am:

Well guess what? I just found out we don't even have a temperature since it's at zero with wind chills at about -20. Isn't winter lovely?????

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, January 30, 2007 - 08:11 am:

By the way, I think that sledding hill was a picture on here last year too. I remember thinking it looked like fun if the temps were in the 20's or 30's.

By Janet Boatman (Janetnwohio) on Tuesday, January 30, 2007 - 08:37 am:

Snow and very cold in Ohio, bah humbug bring summer back I know I won't say I can't wait for winter because it is too hot. Have a good day.

By Tom Karjala (Tom) on Tuesday, January 30, 2007 - 08:51 am:

Morning Alexis----------no snow in Warren County?

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, January 30, 2007 - 09:24 am:

I'm with you Janet. Not once have I ever said I can't wait for winter. However, I don't have enough fingers and toes to count how many times I've said I can't wait for summer. Bah Humbug indeed!!!

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Tuesday, January 30, 2007 - 09:25 am:

Good morning! This Friday is not only Ground Hog Day but it's also wear the Bear's colors to work day. So all you Bear fans wear blue and orange to work Friday, it might bring us some luck!

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Tuesday, January 30, 2007 - 09:59 am:

We've been fortunate down here to have a nice snow cover once it got going! Most days we get a touch of snow to freshen everything, and it's been just beautiful for a few weeks now.

By Ray Laakaniemi (Rlaakan) on Tuesday, January 30, 2007 - 10:12 am:

Wind chill -14 about 40 miles sw of Minneapolis, in the -20s throughout Minnesota. Where is that Groundhog?

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Tuesday, January 30, 2007 - 10:34 am:

Marsha, I agree with you 100%. It is beautiful! I love all the seasons. But I don't like the heat and humidity parts of summer. But it is good for the garden, so I try not to complain too much.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Tuesday, January 30, 2007 - 10:51 am:

Snow is pretty for a picture or to cover up all the ugly, but I've no use for it on the road or down my neck and wind chill factors are things I don't want in my life. Some day I will live where there is no snow.

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Tuesday, January 30, 2007 - 10:57 am:

Ray Laakaniemi are you any where near Mankato? Went there in mid-90's for a convention for Maude Hart Lovelace the writer. She wrote my favorite childhood books...Betsy, Tacy & Tib etc. series. Nice small city. It's always so interesting to see an area or person you think you know, in real life.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Tuesday, January 30, 2007 - 11:20 am:

Lol, I think I'm going to be the only one today to say, "bring on the snow and cold"!! All I have to do is remind myself that 90/90 is just 4 months away :(

I remember sledding that hill as a youngster, and as an adult with Dr. Nat just a couple years ago. I imagine the other kids must have thought we were nuts sledding on a hill with a bunch of children. I guess once a kid, always a kid eh.....

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Tuesday, January 30, 2007 - 11:24 am:

Cindy, I'm with you snow is pretty to cover up the brown. But it can stay off the roads. I'm all for winter as long as I am not hiking up the road because my car is stuck, that ruins a day fast.

For those of you who are interested in the weather
conditions here in Calumet, home of the Pasty Net, try

It is updated every 5 minutes and is very acurate.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Tuesday, January 30, 2007 - 12:19 pm:

Capt. I to would like to sled on that hill, but couldn't make it back up to go down again. Can't walk more then two hundred feet at a time. So would be stuck at the bottom of the hill till spring thaw. By the way the Precious on the Cam Notes isn't the same one that I am married to. Contrary to what some one emailed me, they both are cute though. Cloudy and cold here in Berkley, got to go out to clean the snow off the back deck so Precious doesn't fall again.

By Danbury (Danbury) on Tuesday, January 30, 2007 - 12:34 pm:

Sorry, Capt. Paul, but you're not. but it's easy enough to say, living in a place where temps drop below freezing occasionally, but that's about it.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Tuesday, January 30, 2007 - 01:14 pm:

No Capt. Paul, you're not the only one to say it! Bring on the snow, lots of snow, just keep the temp around 25 ABOVE!

By Jacobsville (Barb) on Tuesday, January 30, 2007 - 02:07 pm:

Musicteacher, that is a wonderful weather link. Thanks!

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Tuesday, January 30, 2007 - 02:57 pm:

Way to go Chuck on getting the Early Bird this morning from Clarkston!Or was you high on top the GM Tech Center in Warren that early designig?FYI Chuck and me go back a long way from $Bay.

Good Afternoon to you all.I'd go sleding with you Mikie,we'd find a way back to the top.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Tuesday, January 30, 2007 - 04:10 pm:

I agree with those of you who prefer that the temperatures stay above 25! MN has some frigid weather, & it's headed our way for this weekend. Rats! And, it can snow, as long as we don't get icing. :-)

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Tuesday, January 30, 2007 - 04:11 pm:

David H--is your current picture of Cades Cove? That is gorgeous country, and I love that cabin.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Tuesday, January 30, 2007 - 05:11 pm:

That cabin reminds me of the movie "The Yearling", also read the book. The memories remain with me to this day.

By Richard Johnson (Dick_fl) on Tuesday, January 30, 2007 - 05:39 pm:

I gotta agree with Capt. Paul. Bring on the snow and cold! I've been stuck in Florida for 35 years and if I never see 90/90 again it would be way too soon! Keep the snow flying and the Sauna hot!

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Tuesday, January 30, 2007 - 05:44 pm:

All you people that love the snow, why aren't you where you wanna be?

By Happy to be in the U.P. (Lahelo) on Tuesday, January 30, 2007 - 05:53 pm:

David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) Now that is a cabin. I would love to have one in nowhere land and just stay there all summer long! Not going to work or any place at all! No noise, no rat race to worry about either!

By Dr. Nat (Drnat) on Tuesday, January 30, 2007 - 07:03 pm:

For us the answer is student loans and the fact we like to eat. Loans don't pay themselves off and food costs money, so we have to have jobs. And despite our best efforts, no one in the Northwoods seems to want to hire a geology professor extraordinaire and her handsome sidekick. :(

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Tuesday, January 30, 2007 - 07:58 pm:

Amen Dr Nat, If I could find a job with my degree I would be up there in a flash. Unfortunately I'm not a teacher or a nurse or I'd ne all set.

By dan belo (Djbelo) on Tuesday, January 30, 2007 - 08:21 pm:

cheer up--only 2 more months of winter. and Feb is a short month.Praise to the Lord.

By Uncle Chuck @ Little Betsy (Unclechuck) on Tuesday, January 30, 2007 - 10:37 pm:

Mikie, Dr Nat, David, & Capt. Paul, I'd go down the hill with all of you, all we would need is Marty to pull us up using the 4x4, wait, that might be worse than the ride down!

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Tuesday, January 30, 2007 - 11:39 pm:

Yes,in my profile is the John Oliver cabin in Cades Cove.I took the picture on 12/12/06 just around sunset. It is the first cabin you come to on the loop.It isn't far from me here in Corryton,so we get to drive thru Cades Cove often in all seasons.I like it when the Dogwood trees are in bloom. It's not easy to take a picture of the cabin without people walking around it at anytime of year.I was lucky to get this one all by it's self.I'll put some more of the Cove up,and I should get me a Guest Gallery going too.Alot of folks like it here,as much as the U.P.That is why i'am here, people and places have alot in common without the snow.

By Beverly, San Jose (Beverly) on Wednesday, January 31, 2007 - 07:54 pm:

I remember that hill oh so well. Freezing my hands and toes, not having the sense to go home and warm up even thou I almost lived across the street.
