This would be a welcomed sight to the Keweenaw tourism industry this year -- a snowmobile groomer at work. Jonathan Hopper caught this photo eight years ago in PastyVision.

By Janet Boatman (Janetnwohio) on Wednesday, January 3, 2007 - 07:07 am:

Good Morning from Ohio which is supposed to get up to 50 today.

By Happy to be in the U.P. (Lahelo) on Wednesday, January 3, 2007 - 07:15 am:

Good Morning from warm Ontonagon.Suppose to get to 45 here. Unusally warm for sure. Maybe spring is on its way already?? Everyone have a good day.

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Wednesday, January 3, 2007 - 07:20 am:

Good morning from the thumb. The weather report I just checked says high of 47° for the next 3 days. Is this our January thaw already? Nothing is frozen.

By jmac (Jillann) on Wednesday, January 3, 2007 - 07:24 am:

Good Morning from Western Illinois- 33 now and suppose to be in the 50's -- back to school I go -- don't believe that this qualifies for a thaw Thumbgardner as you say as nothing is frozen, Personally I prefer it stays this way. I am not a winter person. Have a good day all!

By Rowdy (Roudymi) on Wednesday, January 3, 2007 - 07:58 am:

Temps may be up, but I like the heating bills being down. Don't seem to hear much of that side of the equation.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Wednesday, January 3, 2007 - 08:15 am:

Ditto, Rowdy, specially since Com Ed got their 24% rate increase.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Wednesday, January 3, 2007 - 08:19 am:

Over the holidays, the temps here in eastern Iowa have been flirting around 50 degrees, I have been seeing sparrows building nests and finding eggs on the floor of our horse barn. Wonder what they will do if winter decides to happen after all?

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Wednesday, January 3, 2007 - 08:23 am:

Rowdy, I am grateful for the heat bills being down. We mostly heat with wood, and of course we use less wood, but I am especially glad for those who heat with oil or gas. With what they were paying last year, this has to be a nice change.
At the same time, I feel bad for those that make their living from the tourist trade. I am curious what the rest of the winter will bring.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Wednesday, January 3, 2007 - 08:44 am:

Judy, I have a friend in Houghton who rents out a condo to the tourists and she hasn't made a dime all winter. She said they are importing snow for the weekend's cross-country ski meet. Wonder where the snow is coming from?

By R.Wen (Rjwelpaso) on Wednesday, January 3, 2007 - 09:00 am:

Global warming! It snowed most of the day in El Paso, TX. Temp was 33 degrees most of the day.

By Eloise (Mrsbill) on Wednesday, January 3, 2007 - 09:15 am:

The American Mariner pulled into Bete Grise Bay and was on anchor by 2 AM. It is a beautiful sunny calm day .... but apparently not on the open waters of Lake Superior, where NOAA has posted a Gale Warning, with waves 8 to 11 feet.

xx

By Bob Gilreath (Bobg) on Wednesday, January 3, 2007 - 09:28 am:

They have a snow gun from Mt. Ripley.

They have been keeping the trails covered with a lot of hard work by a lot of people.

The races are ongoing as we speak

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Wednesday, January 3, 2007 - 09:34 am:

Joanie--I read that they took all of the snow from Mich Tech's football & soccer fields & everywhere else they could find. The scooped it up with shovels, moved it, and then shoveled it onto the trail.

Happy New Year 2007! I hope that everyone has a healthy, safe, and prosperous year.

By Charlotte, Mishawaka, IN (Charlotte61) on Wednesday, January 3, 2007 - 09:43 am:

Good morning from Mishawaka, IN where the sun is shinning and it's supposed to be in the high 40s today. This can't be January. A few more days until it's time to go back to school.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Wednesday, January 3, 2007 - 09:43 am:

I'm back! Happy New Year everyone! The State had Monday and Tuesday off for the holiday. It was sure hard to come back. I'm really glad that it has not been cold and snowy. I have hardly run my furnace in my apartment. My last gas bill was only $10 and the one before it was $7.50. I have SW exposure and live on the top floor so I get a lot of free heat. No complaints from me about the weather.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Wednesday, January 3, 2007 - 10:30 am:

Happy New Year Cindy - - - we missed "playing school" with you!

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Wednesday, January 3, 2007 - 10:44 am:

It was good to do only the things I wanted while I was off which included lots of sleeping and reading, some crocheting, too much eating and a little latin dancing.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Wednesday, January 3, 2007 - 10:52 am:

Bobg--Thanks for the link. I had no idea what a big deal this is.
No wonder they were scrounging around for snow.
