These shots from Robert Wetton show one of the many faces that lakes in the Keweenaw take on when the weather turns cold, then warm, then cold again. Ice forms, then gets weaker with the rising temps, only to break up and bunch together when the wind blows. An artist couldn't have arranged those formations any better than Mother Nature did herself, making them look like beautiful, shining crystals with the sun glinting off them - just to get covered with a new blanket of snow. The forces of nature, never cease to amaze me! We're lucky to have so many Pasty Cammists over in our Guest Gallery, who spot simple things that become art, through their eyes. Thanks to all who share!

With all the schools closing or late starts this morning. What does the lakes look like in the wind and snow today? Probably to stormy to go and find out.

It's wonderful how many of the people who share pictures with Pastycam do create "works of art". I think there are many who could easily hang their work in a gallery in NYC! Beautiful pics, especially the 2nd one. Thanks!

I always thought that "style" of ice was neat when the Big lake did that. When the skies cleared the colors in the ice were something to behold,if it wasn't snow covered. The accompanying sound was something to hear also during the building process.

Looks like a mix of sapphires & diamonds. Beautiful shots.

... Was this taken at the Wetton cottage at Bootjack...??....first thing we checked.... at our place down the road was ...the dock. Ice can destroy a dock out there. ....the winds from Chassell (west) can be very strong.....the ice goes out to Lake Superior around the first part of May and then winds bring it back intp Portage Lake and it pounds against the docks. We spent lots of time repairing and rebuilding docks in the 40yrs we had our place.

Fasinating pictures!!Remind me of Dan U's pictures!! The works of mother nature keeps us on our toes for sure!! Yes, I agree...these would make wonderful puzzles...be very challenging for sure! Here in Ohio we are getting lake-effect snows, not too bad in our area, but east of Lake Erie, they will be getting buried. Same in the U.P. when I lived in Ontonagon: plenty inland!

I've only seen this a few times in my life and I have to agree with Roudy, when the sun hits the ice, it's incredible.
I also agree with Bob that the second picture would be quite a puzzle.

Any more news on the Tea Room fire? Those buildings are SO close together there. Could make for a REALLY big fire! Updates anyone?

The Finnish glassware by Iittala resembles the various kinds of ice formations along the lakeshore as shown. What a treat to be able to enjoy that artistry while enjoying a refreshing beverage!

Duck hunting in Chassell in an aluminum boat when these crystals formed and stuck to the boat. We almost didn't make it back. Young and dumb at da Tech. When the winds of November blow, the weather can change in a heartbeat.

I always feel sooooo sad when something is left empty or burned out. The Tea Room was a neat place years ago. Breaks my heart... I wish there was a way to make the Copper Country like it was years ago.. Maybe someday...

Wow! I heard there was a "Canadian Clipper" forecasted for this past weekend, youse guys are getting hammered! You'll be having a white xmas! It's 70 degrees here in southern new mexico.

Did anyone get any pics of Lake Superior this weekend? I heard there were 25 foot tall waves crashing in places. I wish I could've snuck up to see it.

The Spot was originally in an old auto garage (dealership) that was the next building up the hill from The Golden Pheasant (BrassDuck). The old building was demolished so a resturant called the Venice Cafe could be built there. The Spot was moved up to the main street of Hancock, in the first block on the North side, across from Stern's clothing store. Next to Kukkonen's Photography. It was started by an entrepreneur named Francis. Later it was owned by the Chaput family from Atlantic Mine area (I think).
