The Keweenaw has had a slow beginning to the winter wonderland appearance it usually wears this time of year, but never fear, the snow is here! And I think it's to stay this time around. Carl Kiilunen was able to catch the time and temperature sign in Calumet, displaying the degrees we've been enjoying the past several weeks. Of course, anyone who knows anything about U.P. weather, knows that this too must come to an end and we'll be chilling out from now on, with temps like 30° becoming rare and feeling like a heat wave when we get them! Something that always makes me chuckle... the difference in the spring and fall temperatures. Why is it that 30° or 40° seems cold in the fall, but come springtime and we get the same temperatures, we think it's warm ;->

But wait a minute... as today's picture was being uploaded, a daily weather bulletin predicts a high of 39 tomorrow. Mother Nature can't seem to make up her mind?!

It looks like we've had snow since the beginning of November now!

Had -2 degrees (yes, that's a negative sign in front of that 2) in Chassell at 6:00 this morning!!!

I was in the Keweenaw for deer hunting and when it was 40 degrees it felt cold to me. Living here down south, I guess your body gets acclemated to the warmer temperatures.

It never ceases to amaze me that it is so dark there this time of morning. My daugther is a senior at MTU. Every work day since she left for college I have openthe web cam so I can feel closer to her. She graduates in May, but I know I will still have to open the cam to check out the beautiful scenery. Its rivaled only by our Gorgeous Mountains down here in Southwestern Virginia.

Wind chill at 14 this morning here. However, it will get to 51 this afternoon and no snow in sight. But November we passed the Keeweenaw by having 9 inches.

out here in grand forks ND its been about the same temp as back home in da up, and over the last few days weve gotten maybe an inch of snow and everyone is bragging about how harsh winter is here, if only they knew about REAL winters back in da keweenaw!!!

Hey --- I made it to the Keweenaw over Thanksgiving am am thankful that I made it up and back down under da bridge without any weather mishaps! As for the future ---- let it snow, let it snow, let it snow! Hope all you people with ski devices are able to use them from now till April! ;>)

It was 5 degrees in Hubbel this am.

Snowstorm .....
It was snowing heavily and blowing to the point that visibility was almost zero when Heikki got off work. He made his way to his car and wondered how he was going to make it home. He sat in the car while it warmed up and thought about his situation.

Heikki finally remembered his dad's advice that if he got caught in a blizzard he should wait for a snow plow to come by and follow it. That way he would not get stuck in a snow drift. That made him feel much better and sure enough in a little while a snow plow went by and he started to follow it.

As he followed the snow plow he was feeling very smug as they continued and he was not having any problems with the blizzard conditions. After quite sometime had passed he was somewhat surprised when the snowplow stopped and the driver got out and came back to his car and signaled for him to roll his window down.

The driver wanted to know if he was alright as he had been following him for a long time. He said that he was fine and told him of his dad's advice to follow a snow plow when caught in a blizzard.

The driver said that it was OK with him and he could continue if he wanted, but he was done with the Walmart parking lot and was going over to K-mart next.

A fellow was following the plow, as in FFF's story except they were out on a road some of us know. Well the plow slowed almost to a crawl to make a sharp corner and the fellow driving the car had to head for the snow bank to avoid hitting the plow. The car landed on the roof. The plow driver and swamper found him hanging ,upside down, from the steering wheel giving them instructions to get it back on the wheels before the oil ran out as he had to get to the store for more beer. -Names eliminated to protect some of us.-

I used to pass that sign every morning driving to work at Tech from my little house in Red Jacket Shaft.
Yooper in College: North Dakota does have harsh winters. They don't have the snow we get up in the Keweenaw, but it's common to have several weeks where it won't rise above 0 degrees Farenheit (something that isn't common in the Keweenaw, the lake generally keeps us warmer and gives us more snow). Wait until January and February. It's just a different kind of harsh winter. I don't know about UND, but down here it's almost finals week. Good luck on any finals you might have :)

I got plenty of snow out here! I'd do a little braggin' if the roof on my house weren't saggin!

Beautiful photo Sue. Does anyone know why there aren't more garages by the older homes in da U.P.? Just curious.

P.S. Not an assumption based on Sue's photo. I remember thinking about how many of the older homes didn't have garages when I was living in the U.P. At least, we didn't have one! Always thought we could've used one!

Most people didn't have cars when the older homes were built, only horses or used the street cars and train.

A lot of those older homes date back to around the turn of the century (the one BEFORE the Millenium)... people didn't need garages because nobody had anything to put in them... there weren't any cars...

Dr. Nat, i know they have harsh winters here, last year actually brought the record low in grand forks at -44, and thats air temp, no wind chill, the state record low for ND is -61, i should have restated instead of sayin they dont have harsh winters, they brag about how much snow they get, thanks to lake superior for our warmer temps and enormous amounts of snow back home:), CPT at the base, were havin pretty warm temps out here so far eh, i know a couple people that live on the base, theres actually ANOTHER yooper out there, so back home, with 3 of us in the grand forks area we have the UP well represented:)

That's 8th street. Bob and Dave are right--my house is about 100 years old. It's lower maintenance than any of the modern apartments I ever stayed in.

Sue, is that still 8th Street Photography? The sign is covered in snow! This must have been taken pretty early in the season, too -- no big snow banks!

Esp. liked 'Calumet, Sue's' picture of snow and her hard work. I actually don't mind shoveling- I enjoy the hard work, followed by a shower and HOT CHOCOLATE, of course!! It's one of the few jobs a woman can do that shows how hard she worked- and that lasts -at least till the next storm. (And now I have a real snow shovel, when I was a girl, I used the Coal shovel!)

Roudy... You sure are some wild Child!...there's got to be more to that story, or would the telling get some people in trouble? ;)

I too visit the Pasty.com site almost every day. Makes me feel more a part of my sons life. He too is a Senoir at MTU. Great country, I really enjoy visiting the area. I am looking forward to this years festival in Feb.

Wish I was at that BP & gettin a whopper too!, then headin for the harbor for a nice ride and a whitefish dinner @ the Harbor Haus, after that a ride to Lac la Belle and Gay might be in order.AHHH WHAT A RIDE!

That picture by Sue looks like it did here the last heavy snow we had about 2 weeks ago. Only ours here in Missouri isn't Lakes Effect snow. Ours usually comes out of the 4 Corners and the panhandles of Texas and Oklahoma. The Temps here have also been like a Yo-Yo here. Think the high here today was around 47 currently about 44. Had my reminder of the U.P. right here in my Yard.

Good Evening from Linden, MI. My son, Brian, is up at Tech this weekend. He was asked, again, to come up and perform with the orchestra. He plays the string bass. If you go to this weekends concert give him a hug for me (MOM).

Loved the snow pictures. It's 34 here now. We did have sun today.

As a Yooper now living in Cleveland for many years. I grew up walking a mile 4 times a day to and from the Old St. Joe's Grade School and Hancock High. Our Local weather forecasters, who are usually very young, try to make their reports and forecasts earth shattering, they sound the alarm and report storm warnings for a couple of inches snow, and the frostbite warnings usually start coming from them at about 33 degrees with the inevitable instructions on how to dress warm.

As long as we're talking about extreme low temperatures here, I thought you might b interested in the U.P.'s record low temperature, which is 49 degrees below 0. It's shared by 2 communities, Ewen (since 1904), and Champion/Humboldt (since 1939).
