Good Morning!!

By Donna Utzman (Dutzman) on Friday, December 15, 2006 - 07:54 am:

Can someone help me out. I introduced a friend to this sight and I was bragging up the beautiful pictures of the Auroa Borealis that one person had taken. I believe it was around November 2005. I cannot seem to find who the photographer was. Maybe it was November of 2004. The person had the most beautiful pictures of the Northern Lights I have ever seen. Please help!! Thank you.

By Ray Laakaniemi (Rlaakan) on Friday, December 15, 2006 - 08:03 am:

Donna, Answer Man here. Actually, Mary Drew told me how to do this. Go to the page that has today's picture of McLain State Park. Click on the binoculars above the picture where it says Search the Archives. Type in Aurora Borealis. The late Dan Urbanski has some in this category, there are others. Then find the person's name in Guest Achives. Enjoy.

Good morning! Made pasties last night and they were not near as good as the Pasty Cam pasties that I ordered. Is it because the ingredients came from the UP? Maybe it's because I'm not a Yooper, sigh.

By lz (Llamamama) on Friday, December 15, 2006 - 08:37 am:

Had to chuckle this morning. The local weather person was all over herself talking about the great Aurora Borealis light show here in SW Michigan. She would have popped a blood vessel if she had ever seen the light shows back in the UP. Sigh. Yet another reason to be homesick.

Joanie, I was born and raised a Yooper and can't cook much less make a respectable pasty. Thank goodness for ordering them!

By Terry Szpieg (Tszpieg) on Friday, December 15, 2006 - 09:02 am:

I agree Llamamama. I sat outside last night for about 40 minutes and after my eyes adjusted, I could just make them out. Nothing at all like I've seen late night from on top of Brockway. First time, however that I've seen them this far south (east of Grand Rapids). Saw quite a few shooting stars. Pretty cool nontheless.
Still haven't been able to locate my hats...
Happy Holidays everyone!

Back in the day, while working in a local SW Michigan hospital, we had such an unbelievable sight of aurora borealis and yes, it was the first time I had ever seen them that far south. Saw them regularly in the UP area as a child.

I KNEW that those were northern lights! Hubby said they were just clouds, huh! Haven't seen any in years.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Friday, December 15, 2006 - 09:59 am:

Woe is me, thought I spotted the Aurora Borealis last night and it turned out to be the flare from the oil refinery.

Donna - i believe you're thinking of Roger Laitainen - not sure of spelling or of date

By Susan Lahti (Finn_in_texas) on Friday, December 15, 2006 - 11:36 am:

Joanie, my daughter and I are going to attempt to make pasties this Christmas without Mom. Mom and Dad always made them together, which was not too often down here in Texas. We finally made them together with Mom last year, and now that she has passed on, we are going to do it on our own. I have their recipe for the dough, which uses lard and 1 tsp. of vinegar (a must they said). We will be guessing at the amount of meat and vegetables (rutabaga of course). We will definitly do this together more often, they say practice makes perfect, huh? Anyways, I was just thrilled that my daughter wanted to carry on the tradition of making pasties.

Hey everyone...tomorrow is my birthday! I sure hope the Birthday Fairy can find me. It's kind of a gyp to have a birthday so close to Christmas. I think I'll start having half-birthdays.

Happy early birthday Cindy! I'll ask the Tooth Fairy to send a message to the Birthday Fairy!

Deer Joanie -- THANK YOU for the cute birdy greeting! Ewe made my day!!

By Paul Oesterle (Paulwebbtroll) on Friday, December 15, 2006 - 03:12 pm:

My first experience with the northern lights was about 1944. We live about 20 miles east of Lansing on a farm. My brother and I were about 9 and 12. We talked our mother into letting us throw a blanket over the clothesline, making a tent, which we were going to sleep in all night. We woke up in the middle of the night to this moving bright light in the northern sky! It scared the heck out of us and we ran in the house and woke our parents up! They explained to us what was happening and convinced us to go back out to our "tent" and watch this display.

Speaking of the tooth fairy! Did you hear about the little girl who saw grampa's teeth soaking in a glass and said The tooth fairy is never going to believe this.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Friday, December 15, 2006 - 05:20 pm:

Ray, that's so funny! Bet she thought grampa was gonna strike it rich!

By Greta Armata (Gretania) on Friday, December 15, 2006 - 06:02 pm:

We could see the "aurora" last night in northern Milwaukee County....don't get to see them very often this far south, especially with the light pollution from the city.

By Erica - Florida Keys (Erica) on Friday, December 15, 2006 - 08:44 pm:

The UP is certainly beautiful all times of the year, but I like the fall, well, the summer, too, and ,yes, spring is lovely. OK,winter is pretty to look at but the Florida Keys offer warmth and beauty during the cold months that I find most inviting. So I will wait for next summer for my next trip UP.
