Eight years ago, Jonathan Hopper used PastyVision for this view of the construction of the Secretary of State's office in Mohawk. Under the tarp is a hexagonal "lighthouse" cap for the finishing touch. And it looks like the weather then is the same as today: not much snow left and snow sports in enthusiasts doing their Heikki Luunta snow dance.

Oh, my, in my previous job, overseeing the completion of that construction project was my job. I worked in the Property Management Section of the Department of State. I always thought it was a little crazy to put a lighthouse where there was no water. Of course, it wasn't my decision what to build, just to make sure it got done. :o)

Sure Allen, here you go...a photo of the completed Mohawk Secretary of State building (in the month of August).

Article in the milwaukee Journal Sentinel on the book by Steve Lehto titled "Death's Door." In the Cue section of the paper. About the Christmas Eve murders at the Italian Hall in Calumet.........

By Musicteacher (Musicteacher) on Wednesday, December 13, 2006 - 11:16 am:

Please.... They were not murders. It was an accident
and the 72 people were mostly children.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Wednesday, December 13, 2006 - 11:57 am:

Wow Cindy, you did a great job on the "lighthouse". I'm impressed with your job title and skill!

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Wednesday, December 13, 2006 - 12:06 pm:

You give me much more credit than is due. I was simply the project manager.

By Alicia Marshall (Aliciak) on Wednesday, December 13, 2006 - 12:43 pm:

Music teacher,
Read the book about it before you make that
judgement. The author is an attorney and wrote
a factual book backed up with extensive study.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Wednesday, December 13, 2006 - 12:56 pm:

The truth behind what happened in the copper mining town of Calumet, Michigan on Christmas Eve 1913 has remained a mystery. On that day, more than six dozen people were crushed to death as they scrambled to flee the second floor of the Italian Hall, where a Christmas party for children had come to an abrupt end. Someone had cried "Fire" at the top of the stairs. But there was no fire.
Among many questions surrounding the tragedy was, who shouted the fatal warning and why.
The panic-stricken audience rushed for the exits, and in the ensuing chaos, at least 73 people were killed, most of them children. Of the dead, majority were Finnish immigrants or their children. At least two Finnish families lost three children and one two daughters and their mother in the tragedy.
The tragedy permanently scarred the psyche of the region. Was the call of "Fire" a tragic error or a calculated action designed to cause chaos? Now attorney and author Steve Lehto’s book looks to answer the question, was it an accident or murder.
Lehto wades through conflicting news reports, transcripts of hearings and court sessions, and other documentation in an attempt to finally set the record straight.
