My hubby and I took a drive around McLain State Park this week. I think it's the first time we've visited this time of year when there's a little snow on the ground. Yes, I know, shame on us...for not having done so before, because look what we've been missing. As you drive in, you get a glimpse through the trees of Lake Superior rolling along, with signs along the way telling you the cliff is steep and reminding you no pets are allowed on the beach. Then you come upon a stairway that will take you down the cliff to the wonders of winter and the Big Lake's frigid temperatures. Ice on a stick was the treat of the day with this set stuck in the sand, then looking in the opposite direction we found a bigger one yet! The waves weren't massive, but rolling and crashing just the same, just not enough to coat these shoreline decorations with yet another layer. Perfect setting, perfect lighting, perfect day!

The middle one looks like ice mushrooms.

By jefflarae (Jefflarae) on Friday, December 15, 2006 - 07:53 am:

The bottom close up shot almost looks like a pelican resting on a florida beach. You're a long way from home..ah...buddy.

Jefflarae, I thought the same thing when I saw that picture.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Friday, December 15, 2006 - 08:18 am:

Very nice, I can almost smell the crisp clean air. Sure does look like a fat pelican looking over his shoulder, do they have shoulders? Maybe I should have said looking over his wing.

One of these days, we are going to get to McLain to see it at this time of year. There is no finer place anywhere!!! Great photos.

I saw the same thing, but thought it was momma goose looking back to see if her little ones were still following.

OR--an 1800's woman with long brown hair, skirts billowing in the wind behind her, fur rap around her shoulders, anxiously awaiting the boat's return.

The beauty of nature--so much can be seen in every little thing!

Beautiful pictures as usual. Thanks.

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Friday, December 15, 2006 - 09:13 am:

I thought if I squinted enough it would look more like a Canadian goose, which are here in TX for the winter.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Friday, December 15, 2006 - 09:35 am:

Wow, Maija, I see her, too!

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Friday, December 15, 2006 - 09:43 am:

At first I thought it looked that a big fat chicken, but now that I look at it again, it does look more like a goose. A really cold goose.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Friday, December 15, 2006 - 09:59 am:

A cold goose is better than a cooked goose.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Friday, December 15, 2006 - 10:06 am:

...for the goose at least.

Six of the stumps are out of order.

A wonderful time to visit McLain's is after the big lake
has frozen. It is so quiet you can actually hear the
silence. To stand on the beach and face the frozen
water is like coming face to face with God.

By Kathyrn Laughlin (Kathyl) on Friday, December 15, 2006 - 11:51 am:

So, the other day we had a cold duck, now we have a cold goose ;>)

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Friday, December 15, 2006 - 12:40 pm:

I don't think I'd like a "cold goose"!

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Friday, December 15, 2006 - 01:00 pm:

When you give the picture of the Big Lake frozen you can almost smell the fresh; and, feel your nose hairs frozen inside your nose.

I don't think it looked that warm the day I got married on that beach in 1977........

McLain Park, one of my favorites. Was up the frst week of October and went to McLain everyday to take a ride thru the campgrounds and a walk on the paths along the lake. Both dogs had a good time sniffing all the trees and running up and down the hills, then going down to the water for a nice cold drink. And we were the only ones there most of the time, except for the campers in the campground. I remember when there were at least two more roads with camp sites on both sides. Of course that was many, many years ago.(P.S. Hi Jefflarae, I am Julies mother and Erics mother in law.)
