Today's blast from the past is a shot of the famous Keweenaw snow thermometer taken by Jonathan Hopper. We've already had to use that item once, with a heavy snowfall in October. Today the weather service has issued a Lake Effect Snow Warning with 3-5" predicted tonight and heavier amounts by Baraga and Ontonagon.

An ore boat has been on anchor in BG bay since about 3 AM Tuesday morning.

I don't blame him Mr. Bill. Seas were running almost 18 feet at Station 45004 yesterday, and even this morning they were still at 12.5 feet.

Where is Station 45004, and where can we look up wave height at the stations?

Oops, hehe. I guess I should have added where that station is. Station 45004 is 200 nautical miles East/Northeast of Hancock out in the middle of the lake. The site you want is the NOAA National Data Buoy Center, Western Great Lakes Marine Data page. Below is the website link:

YAHOOOOO!!!! I'ts' almost deerhunting time! Or a reason to get U.P. in the Keweenaw and blow the stink off as grampa Norm sez. Marty's got a new winch on the Xttera, nephew Ben has new treads on the Cheorkee, grampa Doug (the chef) has got the menu ready, uncle Charlie is gonna leave Dow Corning in the hands of his secretary, uncle Mike will no doubt get lost in the woods, uncle Tem and Wanye will tell the same ol stories a different way, I'll make a few calls on the hospitals on the way. First to arrive at LB, will be Thursday the 9th, we'll all be there till, the 19th. Pasty Central, hope the drive thru is open and the Hut still serves a mean patty melt! It's almost the first week of Deer Camp and we'll all be there, lookin forward to 4 wheelin in the woods. Yes, not to fear, Marty has the TP, the beef jerkey,and life jackets and " no we never shoot no deer" but we enjoy the CC. Oh, by the way, Jim's Pizza, one extra large cheese and pepperoni, please! If you're by Little Betsy, stop on in, the coffee is always on!

"George is fine. He has returned from sailing, his boat is in storage for the winter and he has been going back and forth to Minneapolis to be with his family."

But the original version of the plastic flamingo may be singing its swan song after inspiring countless pranks -- and being alternately celebrated as a tribute to one of nature's most graceful creatures and derided as the epitome of American pop culture kitsch.

Union Products Inc. stopped producing flamingos and other lawn ornaments at its Leominster factory in June, and is going out of business Wednesday -- a victim of rising expenses for plastic resin and electricity, as well financing problems.

The small privately held firm has been in talks with a pair of rival lawn ornament makers interested in buying the molds and resuming production of the flamingos, designed in 1957 by local son Don Featherstone.

"We think the flamingo will go on," Keith Marshall, Union Products' chief financial officer, said at the company's aging brick factory, where just a few years ago more than 100 employees churned out flamingos by the millions.

Just a couple workers were still around to wrap up business. At the front desk stood a lone flamingo with the words "Happy 50th birthday" written with a black marker on the side, symbolizing hope that the flamingo will rise phoenix-like from the ashes to be reborn.

Other companies' knockoff versions of the Featherstone original remain in production. But the uncertainty surrounding the original has aficionados of kitsch snapping up what they can via the online auction site eBay and elsewhere in case Featherstone versions go out of stock for good.
