Today's blast from the past is a shot of the famous Keweenaw snow thermometer taken by Jonathan Hopper. We've already had to use that item once, with a heavy snowfall in October. Today the weather service has issued a Lake Effect Snow Warning with 3-5" predicted tonight and heavier amounts by Baraga and Ontonagon.

By Alison P (Ricelakealison) on Wednesday, November 1, 2006 - 07:07 am:

Wow! I sure would like to be sipping a cuppa and watching that storm you have going today. Looks like a great day to be viewing (but not sailing) that grand ole lake!

By Mr. Bill (Mrbill) on Wednesday, November 1, 2006 - 07:47 am:

An ore boat has been on anchor in BG bay since about 3 AM Tuesday morning.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, November 1, 2006 - 08:12 am:

Morning!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Wednesday, November 1, 2006 - 08:45 am:

Good morning one and all.....

I don't blame him Mr. Bill. Seas were running almost 18 feet at Station 45004 yesterday, and even this morning they were still at 12.5 feet.

By Eloise (Mrsbill) on Wednesday, November 1, 2006 - 09:19 am:

Capt. Paul -

Where is Station 45004, and where can we look up wave height at the stations?

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Wednesday, November 1, 2006 - 10:00 am:

Oops, hehe. I guess I should have added where that station is. Station 45004 is 200 nautical miles East/Northeast of Hancock out in the middle of the lake. The site you want is the NOAA National Data Buoy Center, Western Great Lakes Marine Data page. Below is the website link:

http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/maps/WestGL.shtml

This page covers all of the moored buoys, C-MAN stations, and other stations in Lakes Superior and Michigan and the Saint Mary's. There is another page that covers Lakes Huron, Erie, Ontario, and Lake Saint Claire as well, but it won't directly link to here. That address is:

http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/maps/EastGL.shtml

Hope this helps......

Wow, Captain Paul, it's nice to have a geologist filling our minds with technical information! It's almost like being back in school. Even better, no homework!

By Cotton (Cotton) on Wednesday, November 1, 2006 - 10:57 am:

Capt. Paul, Thanks for the information. I put that site on my favorites so I can check it out occasionally.

By Eloise (Mrsbill) on Wednesday, November 1, 2006 - 11:32 am:

And thanks from me, too, Capt. Paul. I've added it to my favorites, and will check it everytime a freighter drops anchor in Bete Grise Bay.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Wednesday, November 1, 2006 - 01:18 pm:

Not a problem. I'm full of useless knowledge like that ;-)

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Wednesday, November 1, 2006 - 01:47 pm:

Capt. Paul, don't sell yourself short, it's not useless knowledge, you're a human set of encyclopedias!! Very interesting web-site, gonna need help with some of the "Old Tar" terms!

RE: George Hite - Eagle Harbor webmaster

For those of us wondering about George's welfare, This reply to an e-mail query posted to the Eagle Harbor Township clerk:

"George is fine. He has returned from sailing, his boat is in storage for the winter and he has been going back and forth to Minneapolis to be with his family."

By Bob Jewell, Farmington Hills (Rjewell) on Wednesday, November 1, 2006 - 07:08 pm:

Re George Hite:
George explained everything in his journal on his website.

Flamingo Owners:
You better start guarding your birds. From Yesterday's Detroit Free Press.

But the original version of the plastic flamingo may be singing its swan song after inspiring countless pranks -- and being alternately celebrated as a tribute to one of nature's most graceful creatures and derided as the epitome of American pop culture kitsch.

Union Products Inc. stopped producing flamingos and other lawn ornaments at its Leominster factory in June, and is going out of business Wednesday -- a victim of rising expenses for plastic resin and electricity, as well financing problems.

The small privately held firm has been in talks with a pair of rival lawn ornament makers interested in buying the molds and resuming production of the flamingos, designed in 1957 by local son Don Featherstone.

"We think the flamingo will go on," Keith Marshall, Union Products' chief financial officer, said at the company's aging brick factory, where just a few years ago more than 100 employees churned out flamingos by the millions.

Just a couple workers were still around to wrap up business. At the front desk stood a lone flamingo with the words "Happy 50th birthday" written with a black marker on the side, symbolizing hope that the flamingo will rise phoenix-like from the ashes to be reborn.

Other companies' knockoff versions of the Featherstone original remain in production. But the uncertainty surrounding the original has aficionados of kitsch snapping up what they can via the online auction site eBay and elsewhere in case Featherstone versions go out of stock for good.

Thanks for all the "thank you's" today from everyone. Although all the talk of the big lake, deer hunting, Keweenaw geology, and everything else UP has made me quite homesick now!! :(

By Tara Plante (Michmedic) on Wednesday, November 1, 2006 - 10:47 pm:

I'm sure it's somewhere on here, and I just can't find it (!), but what happened to the bridge cam?
Thanks!

By Danbury (Danbury) on Thursday, November 2, 2006 - 02:47 am:

Michmedic, look at the very last line on this page, below the Preview/Post Message button - there's the link.
It just worked, but the last BridgeCam appears to be from 10/15 ...
