Just about every season here UP North has something that draws people in. Of course during the Autumn months, it's the beautiful bursts of color as the leaves change. In these photos from Gordy Schmitt, you get the feeling that you're right there on the road, taking in the surrounding hues first hand. If you look closely at the first shot, you can just make out a "Pass with Care" sign, which got me to thinking that this time of year, if you do too much "passing", you might just miss the beauty along the way.

By Smfwixom (Trollperson) on Monday, October 2, 2006 - 07:18 am:

Beautiful!

By Marianne Young (Marianne) on Monday, October 2, 2006 - 07:22 am:

This is a gorgeous stretch of autumn foliage. In a way, it reminds me of another one, the Harbor Springs to Cross Village stretch, in the northern part of the Lower Peninsula.

Thank you for the beautiful pictures!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Monday, October 2, 2006 - 07:26 am:

Gorgeous! I bet the covered road on the way to Freda is breathtaking.

By Pauline (Yooperinpa) on Monday, October 2, 2006 - 07:29 am:

Missing the colors this year...but the pictures make me feel like I'm there. Thanks for sharing.

By Robert H. Baker (Rhb) on Monday, October 2, 2006 - 07:46 am:

The colors are looking great. Im also glad to see that US-41 hasn't changed over the years :)

By Jim Nicholas (Jimn) on Monday, October 2, 2006 - 08:38 am:

GREAT PICTURES AS ALWAYS. WAS SADDENED TO HEAR OF THE CLOSING OF THE STILL WATERS HOME THOUGH. I HAVE BEEN ON THIS SITE ALMOST FROM THE BEGINNING. ENJOYED HEARING ABOUT THOSE WHO LIVED THERE. BLESSINGS TO ALL.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Monday, October 2, 2006 - 08:58 am:

Want to hear a bit of irony, Marianne? The road you spoke of is the very one I was thinking about before I saw your post. Have driven that stretch of road many times.....BEAUTIFUL! Have a great Autumn day, everyone.

By Shelly Harwood (Shelly) on Monday, October 2, 2006 - 09:57 am:

Thank you for posting these kinds of pictures for us who are not in Michigan anymore but miss it very much!

By Julia (Julia) on Monday, October 2, 2006 - 10:11 am:

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Monday, October 2, 2006 - 10:28 am:

I second Shelly's comment!! We were very sad that we couldn't make it this year for the Seaman Museum Ball, and it sounds like the leaves would have been out as well....

By jeffryeleconte (Upwannabee) on Monday, October 2, 2006 - 10:33 am:

HELLO,
I HAVE LIVED NEXT TO RTE. 41 , IN KENTUCKY AND INDIANA, FOR THE LAST 36 YEARS. WAS DRIVING ON IT JUST ABOVE COPPER HARBOR WHERE IT ENDED, QUITE UNEXPECTADLY, IN SORT OF AN ANTICLIMATIC TURN AROUND. WE HAD NO IDEA THAT'S WHERE IT ENDED. WAS FUNNY AT THE TIME. WISH I WAS IN COPPER HARBOR. JEFF

By JanieT (Bobbysgirl) on Monday, October 2, 2006 - 10:55 am:

Highway 41 is mentioned in The Allman Brothers Band song, Ramblin' Man.

By Scott (Illini52) on Monday, October 2, 2006 - 11:54 am:

Great pictures. Makes me want to be up the UP right now. Leaves are just starting to turn here in central Illinois. The fall harvest is going strong though which is always a nice time of year.

By eugenia r. thompson (Ert) on Monday, October 2, 2006 - 12:20 pm:

Hwy. 41 goes all the way to FL, Key West, I think.

By Richard Johnson (Dick_fl) on Monday, October 2, 2006 - 12:26 pm:

Actually Jeff, 41 doesn't end in the UP it begins there. It ends 62 miles from here in Miami at the intersection of Calle Ocho and Biscayne Blvd.

By Kniton2 (Kniton2) on Monday, October 2, 2006 - 12:26 pm:

US-41 actually terminates in Miami....1990 miles from the northern terminus in Copper Harbor :)

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Monday, October 2, 2006 - 12:45 pm:

Janie: I never realized that before!

By clinton drake (Clint) on Monday, October 2, 2006 - 12:48 pm:

It looks like the cover of a road atlas.

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Monday, October 2, 2006 - 01:03 pm:

FYI:
Lest any potential visitors - desperately seeking pictures of current foliage conditions - be mislead, the pictures above, stunningly beautiul tho' they are, are alas from October 2005!

By Martha Lantz (Wishin2bintheup) on Monday, October 2, 2006 - 01:10 pm:

I grew up in Copper Harbor and have never been to the south end of US 41. Recently I've been wondering if there is a sign in Miami that says "Copper Harbor, Michigan - 1990 miles." I figured that since the sign in Copper Harbor told where the south end of the road was, that maybe the south end of the road should tell people where the north end of the road is! Sounds only fair. :)

By Richard Johnson (Dick_fl) on Monday, October 2, 2006 - 02:04 pm:

Good idea Martha except that people in Miami aren't that bright and they would just shrug their shoulders and say something like ¿Cuál es un “Copper Harbor”? ;-)

By Jo Storaker (Trekkspiller) on Monday, October 2, 2006 - 02:29 pm:

As two foreign students from Norway, at Tech in 1967, my roommate and I drove US41 end-to-end from Copper Harbor to Miami. The car was a $ 100 '59 Ford Fairlane 2-door. Bought it from anothe Norwegian student who, upon graduation bought himself a newer car. Quite an interesting trip and a way to see the US!. PS: I ended up marriyng a Copper Country girl, so I get back to the CC at least once a year. No better place on earth than the Copper Country

By Helen Milan (Hmilan) on Monday, October 2, 2006 - 05:10 pm:

I drove up to Mohawk from Chicago, last Wed, to visit a relative and thought the trees were the most beautiful (in their full Autumn splendor)that I had ever seen. Nothing compares to the UP for scenery and serenity. Drove the 8 hour drive back home on Friday. Too short a trip for sure, but cannot wait to return!!

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Monday, October 2, 2006 - 05:53 pm:

dick fl: because people speak a different language or are not familiar with an area does not mean they "aren't that bright"!

Just my 2 cents.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Monday, October 2, 2006 - 06:01 pm:

Maija, I am sure that Dick meant his comment as a joke and you should check out his bio before condeming him. As you know there are a lot of people who want to make English the official language of the country. I am sure he wasn't infreing that Hispanicks are stupid.
Just my two cents worth.

By JanieT (Bobbysgirl) on Monday, October 2, 2006 - 06:11 pm:

Was the Miami 1990 milage sign put back up in Copper Harbor? Last time we were there snowmobiling, it was gone. Marsha, the verse in "Ramblin' Man" sung by Greg Allman of the Allman Brothers Band went, "I was born in the back seat of a bus traveling down highway 41". More than likely in the southern portion of highway 41, being the band is from Georgia.

By Thea (Tkelwag) on Monday, October 2, 2006 - 06:11 pm:

I would guess there's a sign in Miami noting the Copper Harbor mileage. I live in California at the end (or perhaps the beginning) of Route 50, it says "Ocean City, Maryland" and some mileage -- 3000 + miles. Since I'm a Maryland girl, when i was there a few years ago I went to the beginning (or perhaps end) of Route 50 and did see the sign which says "Sacramento, California".

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Monday, October 2, 2006 - 10:51 pm:

Janie, you're right about it being the southern portion of highway 41. Here it is:
"Well my father was a gambler down in Georgia,
He wound up on the wrong end of a gun.
And I was born in the back seat of a Greyhound bus
Rollin' down highway 41."
I hope everyone rolling UP highway 41 has a safe and enjoyable trip. We sure enjoyed being up there a few weeks ago.

By James L Alain (Jimcoppercountr) on Tuesday, October 3, 2006 - 01:34 pm:

There in NO sign at the Miami end of US 41 indicating mileage to Copper Harbor, Michigan, or anything like that...merely a small black and white sign reading "End US 41", where it meets US 1 in downtown Miami. In earler years, US 41 was routed over to Miami Beach, but never to Key West.

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Monday, October 6, 2008 - 04:42 am:

Very scenic road scenes. Checking some history of Keweenaw's
numbered highways, there used 2 b highways M-6 and M-129
in that area. But whatever the numbers, they're quite scenic in
the Autumn, I would think, like the 1 pictured above.
