Copper Country contributor Carl Kiilunen has shared a wealth of current and historic photos, transporting Pasty Cam watchers to times and places of interest to all who love the Keweenaw. You may recall when Mr. Kiilunen took us to a grounded steamer off Point Isabelle, or shared his reminiscences about bakery owner George Hoyem. It just so happens George was one of the organizers of Torch Lake Archery Club back in the 50's. I see some other familiar names among the group, like Doug Edwards, Howard Berg, and Al Aubin. The four adventurers in the shots above are Ernie Lamppa, Ed DuTemple, Joe Marcotte, and Amos Turner.

We realize it takes a lot of time and effort to scan, organize, and upload pictures like these. Our hearty thanks to Carl and hundreds of other contributors to the Guest Gallery for sharing their passion for life in the U.P.

By the way, this week Little Brother-Friends of the Elderly will pick the winner of that Ford Mustang GT convertible, and all the other fabulous prizes in their Summer 2006 fundraiser. As you know, Pasty Central was born over a decade ago in response to the need of raising awareness and assistance for care for the elderly in this historic Great Lakes region. Elder care is undergoing some radical adjustments in the state of Michigan, due to changing regulations and demographics. Little Brothers continues to play a vital role "Where service to the elderly begins by being a friend." Consider having a part in this effort, and I hope some fortunate Pasty Cam visitor drives away in that shiny Mustang.

Have a good week :o)

I can remember watching these archers going over their course up on the Incline Hill on the way to the Quarry above Lake Linden in the early 1950's. If I recall they had stations somewhat similar to going around a golf course with different animal posters as targets.
The group also would practice above the building downtown(Lindells or St Pierre's) during colder weather and we were allowed to go in and watch their activities. Many of these brave men had volunteered to serve in the Second World War and were either working at the C & H or attending Michigan Tech or Soumi. A real great time to be growing up for me.

Neat pictures Carl. I love the blast from the past pictures :) Bring back memories of how much I loved archery...which for some reason, I learned left handed, instead of right handed.
