Today's eight-year memory is the Community Action building at the south fork of US-41 and Cliff Drive.

Happy Friday All!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, August 18, 2006 - 07:46 am:

Yeah, Pennie! I could have gotten it if I'd been paying closer attention, but as you know, I was busy answering e-mails from the night before.

That building marks the gateway to many wonderful sites. It also makes a fine staging point for geologic adventures in the Keweenaw as well......

morning all. Just finished my morning walk..got a late start. I'm on the countdown to my visit to the C.C. I'll be there on the 24th...that's just 6 more days!!! yahoo My brother Donald is getting married on the 25th, so I'll be there for that and get rejuvenated(spelling?) at the same time.

By Kathy P. (Katiaire) on Friday, August 18, 2006 - 10:23 am:

Anita, I envy you; your first trip to the UP. Every trip is absolutely wonderful, but during your first trip you will just be in awe of all the beauty. Enjoy!

By kathie Murto (Murtomania) on Friday, August 18, 2006 - 10:24 am:

Mikie- the weather will hold off for us CRUISERS!! Parade in Ferndale at 5:30pm and then I was told there is one in Berkley. OF course cruising all day Saturday, and then the second annual event of the antique police and firetrucks (we have a 1960 American Le France pumper fire truck)parade in Madison Heights on Sunday 10:30 am). Busy weekend-- I love the DREAM CRUISE!!!

Good morning everyone :) Weather on Lake Michigan today, is 'hazy'...that's the description the weather channel used ;)

Pennie, Have a wonderful trip to da UP :) And Mikie, have fun watching all those cars cruising tonight ;)

By Randall Ollila (Rwolli) on Friday, August 18, 2006 - 11:00 am:

Morning All.
-Hey Mikie- and any others who may be going to the Dream Cruise, if you have the time stop by Royal Oak Ford and see the Roush Portable Dynamometer in action. The unit is used to measure HP & Torque to the Drive wheels. Pretty neat to see the Hot Rods doing their thing up on the Dyno.

By Sdcferndale (Sdcferndale) on Friday, August 18, 2006 - 11:16 am:

I will be cruising in my black 1973 Nova, mostly around Ferndale. it gets too congested down "yonder" toward Royal Oak. Hope the weather will get better and less muggy.

Fran and Mary, I missed looking at this site yesterday. When I was a kid my dad told us we could eat those weeds. He called them button weeds. We get these in our yard and my kids used to eat them. I did a search on the internet and it looks like something called common mallow. See if this is what you were talking about.

We also ate something we called wintergreen, but we found that in the woods. Good memories.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Friday, August 18, 2006 - 11:33 am:

I wish I could be there for the cruise tonight!! I just had my cousin down here for the past week and she will be at the cruise tonight in Berkley. We have our own little cruise night every Saturday which draws about 300 cars or so. It is a lot of fun, but nothing like the dream cruise.....

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Friday, August 18, 2006 - 11:46 am:

Sorry to jump in again in the middle of the cruise conversation. But I just found another interesting link. Those little button weeds are in the same family as the hollyhocks. They are actually nutritious.

adventures to everyone.

By Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Friday, August 18, 2006 - 12:22 pm:

JH (Thumbgardener),

THAT'S IT!!! Thanks for finding it for us. It's a good thing as youngsters we didn't know it was so nutritious, we might not have wanted to eat them then! :->

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Friday, August 18, 2006 - 12:37 pm:

Mary, you are right, we probably wouldn't have ate them if we knew. Now maybe I will go out and look for some, but I will wash them for sure!!!

By timd (Timd) on Friday, August 18, 2006 - 01:13 pm:

Mary, I dont know if my sister had ever tried that wintergreen, It grow's in the wood's up from our parents house.Very tasty.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Friday, August 18, 2006 - 01:42 pm:

Who knew weeds were so nutritious??? Must be the good fertilizer ;-)

By Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Friday, August 18, 2006 - 04:21 pm:

Hey Timd,
I don't think I ever tried the wintergreen one either, but I do remember eating the button like plant on the link JH (Thumbgardener) provided. They grew all over the Catholic School playground!

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Friday, August 18, 2006 - 06:16 pm:

This is what the wintergreen looked like that we used to find in the woods where I grew up in the northern LP. Wintergreen.

By Fran in GA (Francesinga) on Friday, August 18, 2006 - 07:17 pm:

JH(Thumbgardner), yup that is what I remember. Thanks for the pictures and descriptions Fran

By Pennie (Trolldiva) on Saturday, August 19, 2006 - 01:16 am:

Sounds like there are a few of us from Ferndale on this site. The cruise was BUSY tonight. I think I got my share of exhaust fumes.
