MaryLou and Mikie, just saw your brief exchange on friday, and, well, actually, it is the Sauerland, I think, remembering what MaryLou once told me about where she's been. There's the Saarland, too, which is a state. The Sauerland would be a landscape, an area, in Northrhine-Westphalia (state). Like the UP is part of MI.

Danbury...Thanks anyhow. I loved the Sauerland and it's beautiful homes......so unique with the inscriptions on the timbers. My German family came to Quincy from Heinsburg and Oberhunden in the Sauerland.......My German is getting "rusty" from not using the language so guess I'll start to plan another trip but to Switzerland because my cousin, Heidi, has wanted me to make the trip for some time, she is in the German speaking region.....went to Italy in May but noone spoke English or German, wonder why?? I did learn a few words of Italian.......so got along just fine. Thanks

Just got back from a great 11 days in the C.C. Uncle Charlie and I had our boats out at Keystone Bay observing the fire. We were 50 yards off the shore watching pine trees explode into a ball of flame. Looked like more than 50 acres destroyed to me but it was hard to tell from the water, the fire fighter's are going to be busy for a long time. Great trip otherwise!

Is it true that, in the UP, those little bugs that fly around at night blinking are not really fireflies but mosquitoes with flashlights?

Believe it or not, that's the first time I saw a picture of Suicide Hill without snow. My father attended many jumping meets in the 40's and early 50's and we have lots of "action" shots of his buddies coming off the point of no return.

I don't know where you went to in Italy, but the tourism areas aside, why would they? I came through Rome, Firenze, Milano, communicating just fine with either english and german, but in (tm: on?) the country side, exceptions aside you'd better speak IFL (International Foreigner's Language) - point, smile and gesticulate! :)
Or, even better, of course, italian.

Danbury.....Spent some time in Monticatini Terma in Tuscany and fell in love with the area.....I thought more German would have been spoken because it is not too far from Switzerland. I did get to Florence, Rome & Assisi and managed well except for trying to get a cup of American coffee...We were 43 Yoopers traveling together on a trip to Rome to see the Pope......went with Father Benedetto Paris from Marquette. Great trip!!!!

It's the other way around - people in southern Switzerland, the country in its whole being trilangual (tm?), speak italian. To find people speaking german in Italia go to Tyrol, near the Austrian border.
Northrhine-Westphalia, short NRW, is the state. Westphalia is a landscape within the state of NRW as well as a historical (political, greater) landscape, and the Sauerland is a landscape within Westphalia, and thereby NRW, respectively.
Parallel: MI - UP - Keweenaw.

Danbury...Appreciate your response. "The Keweenaw" is an "area"..generally considered the area from the Houghton-Hancock bridge in Houghton County to the north.... and it includes Keweenaw County.... Keweenaw County is at the northern end of the Upper Peninsula........Thanks again ...
