Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Friday, June 2, 2006 - 07:15 am:

As we've been looking back at the beginnings of the Pasty Cam in 1998, it was before the time of "Reality Shows" on TV ("Survivor" began in 2000, for example). Jonathan captured a little U.P. June reality by pointing the camera over the hood that day, between the wipers. I guess it takes some bleak days to help us appreciate sunny blue skies.

We're excited to open the voting for our 2007 Pasty Cam Color Calendar! Over the next 2 weeks we invite you to search out your favorite shots of all time which have appeared on these pages. Simply point at any picture and right click your mouse. Choose "Copy Image Location" and paste that URL into an email message to 2007Calendar@pasty.com. This year the calendar will emphasize seasons, so we are asking that you choose no more than four pictures as your favorites for each season. We will accept votes for the next 2 weeks, and then get the new calendar to the printer.

It has been a busy week, as we've celebrated the 10th anniversary of Pasty.com, announced expansion of our UP-Wide broadband network, and welcomed Dean Woodbeck to the staff. Also, plans are in full swing for Pasty Fest with Main Street on July 1, which will be here before you know it.

Thanks for making Pasty Central a part of your day on the 'net!

Morning!
First Post

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, June 2, 2006 - 07:02 am:

Smfwixom, You beat me because I went downstairs to work on my ablounge. Congrats! Have a great Friday everybody and a wonderful weekend.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Friday, June 2, 2006 - 07:43 am:

Sur5er: Where are you? Hope all is well.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, June 2, 2006 - 07:55 am:

Sur5er: I was wondering the same thing. Hope everything's okay. Just say hi or something, okay?

Kosk, Did your daughter like her books? I think Patterson has one on the best seller list right now. Have both of his new ones but no time to read. Too much planting and watering to do.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Friday, June 2, 2006 - 08:18 am:

I was wondering yesterday where sur5er was also, missed her quick wit. Dark and cloudy here in Berkley, looks like rain.

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Friday, June 2, 2006 - 09:42 am:

The last time we heard from Sur5er she was heading out to the pool with a really good book and a glass of iced tea.

By JanieT (Bobbysgirl) on Friday, June 2, 2006 - 10:00 am:

I have a Hummingbird question...what specie is a black colored head Hummingbird? I have a couple at my feeder and I have never seen one with that color, just the green ones. Thanks! Do you suppose sur5er snuck off to the U.P.?

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Friday, June 2, 2006 - 10:26 am:

Bobbysgirl,
I don't know alot about hummingbirds (although I do feed them) But here are a couple good sites that might help you:
http://hummingbirds.net/
http://www.amazilia.net/MIHummerNet/

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Friday, June 2, 2006 - 10:32 am:

Depends on where your at JanieT. I know in the right light the ruby throated can appear to have a black head. For a good description of hummers with pictures, you can go to www.hummingbirds.net/species for a lot of info. Otherwise, you can always take a picture and post it here ;-)

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Friday, June 2, 2006 - 10:34 am:

L-o-o-onging for the UP. Maybe next Friday I can come UP for a few days. I'll be done with school next Thursday, but have to help figure out my mom's life since my dad died. Remain at home at age 90 (and one of us 3 siblings be with her every night), senior apartment, assisted living? She takes care of herself OK now, but that could change at any moment. Her eyesight is poor and she is weak.

By Lorelei (Lorelei) on Friday, June 2, 2006 - 10:47 am:

Marsha,
There are several nursing companies that could stop by your Mom's on a daily basis to help with the neccessities like cooking, cleaning and bathing. The nurses and aids that come to my Grama's have become close friends of the family. You should check that out so your mom doesn't have to move right away.

By JanieT (Bobbysgirl) on Friday, June 2, 2006 - 10:51 am:

Hey! Those are great Hummingbird sites! Thankyou! I think I have either a Black Chinned or a Costa's male and female hanging out at our house.

By Erica - Florida Keys (Erica) on Friday, June 2, 2006 - 11:07 am:

Sur5er,are you enjoying the book and pool so much you are forgetting the pasty cammers? We are all waiting to hear from you....and you better have a good excuse handy.

By Mary Lou Curtin (Marylou) on Friday, June 2, 2006 - 11:50 am:

Marsha...at age 90 my delightful, mother-in-law moved from the family home into senior apt. She loved her home so it was not an easy move, but she now loves her apartment and has a social network at the senior building. She wouldn't change a thing and at 96 is an inspiration..she is cute as a button....she still bakes me a chocolate-cherry- cake every summer when I get to the Copper Country. My first one was for my 14th birthday the first year I met her and each year since.....I am looking forward to my cake this summer......

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Friday, June 2, 2006 - 11:53 am:

Marsha, After my Dad died my Mom was by herself and I made her get the service that is advertised as "Help I've fallen and can't get up". I was at work and was called by the police that she was not responding to the service, and they could see her in bed. Well, she had this big doll that she would put in the bed and cover up. The police could see this in the window and thinking it was her called me, I told them to break the door down which they did and by the time they knew what was going on I was there. Seems my sister took my mother shoping and did not tell the service that Mom wouldn't be home. I had to fix the door and the casing since they were in a hurry that they broke everything. If you get this service make sure you teach Mom how it works, and also your siblings.

By FJL (Langoman) on Friday, June 2, 2006 - 11:59 am:

Erica---when you said "we are ALL waiting" did you mean all of us Pasty cammers??

By Erica - Florida Keys (Erica) on Friday, June 2, 2006 - 12:14 pm:

FJL, all of us who look forward to her postings.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Friday, June 2, 2006 - 12:33 pm:

Thanks for all the tips!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Friday, June 2, 2006 - 12:38 pm:

Hmm lets piece this together.....

Sur5er was headed out to the pool (Lake Superior) with a really good book (Cradle to Grave, perhaps?) and a glass of iced tea (the Long Island variety in a fishbowl from the Ambassador?)......

Yup, she's escaped to the UP ;-)

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Friday, June 2, 2006 - 12:45 pm:

...We haven't heard from her since Monday!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Friday, June 2, 2006 - 01:48 pm:

Maybe it's time for a "Sur5er" Alert!!

By lz (Llamamama) on Friday, June 2, 2006 - 03:20 pm:

Charlie: pardon me for being so "nosey", but I am a MTU Alum and graduated with Dean Woodbeck. Has Dean come home to the UP or is he working with Pasty Cam from afar! Whatever the means welcome back Dean!

To all the posters: Where in the world is Sur5er?

By Liz B (Lizidaho) on Friday, June 2, 2006 - 03:49 pm:

Just sent her an e-mail at home to alert Sur5er that we are all in a tizzy over not getting our daily dose!

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Friday, June 2, 2006 - 04:50 pm:

I got an urgent email to check in with Pasty Cam. I was so touched by everyone's posts :) Thank you for caring :)

Everything is fine here...just a little hectic with this case...especially with the latest mess up by Indiana in the Upland trucking tragedy. And the anniversary date of Detective Artis White's (of the Michigan State Police) wife being gunned down at the Lansing Zoo, is approaching, and I am trying to finish up my book, so I can give him the book and the copyright to it, as a present ...so he can use the funds for the reward money or in finding the responsible parties.

So, I'm just swamped right now...but I do take the time each day to check in and read the posts here...it's what keeps me going :)

Hope everyone has a wonderful and safe weekend :)

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, June 2, 2006 - 06:21 pm:

Sur5er, Was going to e-mail you at home when I got home from work if we didn't hear from you by now. Glad all's well. See how you're missed when you're not heard from? What a site. I just love the way people care about each other here. It's like having a whole n'other family. (I think I'm with Capt. Paul, though. It really sounds like you've escaped to the UP. You lucky girl, you.)

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Friday, June 2, 2006 - 06:36 pm:

Usedtobeayooper, What I wouldn't give to be in the UP right now. I am having major withdrawls, the more I work ;) Less than six weeks until I head to Michigan for Girlie Girl Week...yeeeeeee haaaaaaaaw! Am crossing my fingers, we will have time while I am in northern Michigan, to head up to the UP, if only for a day trip :)

By Erica - Florida Keys (Erica) on Friday, June 2, 2006 - 06:39 pm:

Glad everything is ok with you,Sur5er.

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Friday, June 2, 2006 - 06:42 pm:

Mornin'; I tried once I got to summer school, but the kids came in too fast. One more week. Sur5er: keep your head above the waters. We're looking at 21-22 maybe for the UP. I gotta get through the yearly in two weeks so you know I'm looking over my shoulder. :-) love and peace to all.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Friday, June 2, 2006 - 07:05 pm:

The sun is breaking through the clouds and it is beautiful. Son came over today and we put brakes on his truck and Kelly's Pontiac. I made spagetti for every one with cresent rolls, then rasberry sherbert for desert with shortbread cookies from the Girl Scouts. Now that we have Sur5er back where is The Pirate Marc? He hasn't been around for several weeks. He is like Capt. Paul, very interesting.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Friday, June 2, 2006 - 07:29 pm:

Sur5er--

So you're just working like a maniac and not
"partying on" in the UP. Hope you make it to
St. Ignace for that fudge pie. See, I remember
your recommendation, and have plans to get
some when I cruise through there with my
daughter. The guys in my family will never
have the patience to stop for something so
frivolous when they're headed home.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Friday, June 2, 2006 - 07:32 pm:

kosk, When you stop in St. Ignace, make sure you go to the Clydes drive in best hamburgers in that part of MIchigan.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Friday, June 2, 2006 - 07:34 pm:

Usedtobeayooper--

My daughter loved the Patterson books. The
last time I visited her she had a new hardback
in hand, but I can't remember the title.

Rough weekend ahead for me report writing
and report cards. Everything is due on June
6th--my own personal D-Day.

By Ms. Katie (Mskatie) on Friday, June 2, 2006 - 08:05 pm:

Sure am relieved that sur5er is okay just busy. I picture her flaoting in her pool with a book in one hand and daiqurie in the other. I keep forgetting not everyone is retired like me altho I keep busy but with things I usually want. By the way, I had ask if anyone knew if rooms are hard to get around Pasty Fest? I'm not sure exactly what dates we'll be able to be there besides July 1.Any help from you folks? I don't sleep well in the car. Thanks.:>

By Laurie B. (Ratherberiding) on Friday, June 2, 2006 - 08:18 pm:

Unless there's a "Clydes" in St. Ignace too, I think the one you are referring to Mikie, is in the Soo. Been there, the burgers are good. You can sit outside and watch the boats go by.

Hi Deb!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, June 2, 2006 - 09:01 pm:

Hey Laurie, I knew that was you as soon as I saw Laurie B (Ratherberiding). Very clever! Glad to see you joining in. It's fun. Hope everyone's okay down your way.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Friday, June 2, 2006 - 09:37 pm:

Mikie-- Sometimes I come through the Soo,
sometimes through St. Ignace. It could be a
win-win situation for me. Clyde's it is!

Ok--I decided to be "bad." I was reading the
paper and then a novel instead of taking on
those reports. I'll pay for it tomorrow.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Friday, June 2, 2006 - 10:39 pm:

Clydes is on US 2 just west of the bridge, it is the original Clydes, it is a drive in with waitress who come out to your car or you can eat inside.
