Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 - 05:30 am:

The beautiful gardens at Still Waters was our shot-of-the-day eight years ago. This colorful park behind the Home at the corner of Elm and Mine Street in Calumet was originally funded by a grant from the Michigan Library Association. Over the years it has enjoyed the care of many volunteer gardeners, and is an ideal spot for wedding photos. In fact, quite a few weddings have actually taken place in the gazeebo.

If you are in the U.P. a week from this Saturday, join us at the Calumet Theatre for a benefit concert for Still Waters. From 7 - 9 p.m. on May 20th at the Calumet Theatre enjoy the talents of many local musicians who have entertained at Still Waters over the years. I even hear that singing Sherrif Ron Lahti will be there with his guitar! It's a treat every time we go to the historic Calumet Theatre, so we invite you to come along and bring a friend. Tickets will be available at the door for only $8, and all proceeds will help support the work with area elderly residents at Still Waters Assisted Living.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 - 06:26 am:

Sounds like a wonderful evening. I've only
seen one show at the Calumet Theater and
that was many, many moons ago when my
cousins and I spent part of our strawberry
picking money to see "The Music Man." At
least, I think that's what we saw... The theater
was gorgeous.

Mornin'

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 - 07:07 am:

Morning! I saw "Gone With the Wind" for the first time at the Calumet Theatre. It is a beautiful place. I also watched my cousin and her band perform there. She sang country music and had her own band. She lives around Nashville and still writes songs but I don't really think she's written anything real popular. Anyway, I loved that place as a kid.

Mary, a little bird told me you were turning 50 today. Happy Birthday and welcome to the world of the rest of us "Over the Hillers". (As long as you don't act it, you'll be okay. Growing old is mandatory but growing up is optional.)

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 - 10:37 am:

Time for my gourmet breakfast. Peanut butter on toast. Then a fried salami and cheese for lunch and to even it out I am making Precious and myself a salad with chicken and fresh field greens. Also cranberries, pine nuts, walnuts, cheese, pear sliced thin, and manderan oranges. Can you tell that she is from Berkley? For dinner I would prefer a good beef stew, but I have to cook for Precious. Last night we had Omaha Steak hot dogs, probably paid three bucks apiece. Got to admit they were better then Ballpark, but not as good as Vollworths. When I was a kid I would pick out the mustard seeds from the hot dog. Things have changed.

By JanieT (Bobbysgirl) on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 - 10:52 am:

Hope you have a wonderful birthday today Mary! Enjoy!

By MHodges (Modges) on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 - 10:55 am:

Thanks Deb S. for Mary's birthday news. I didn't want to be the one since I haven't had my turn yet and you know what they say about paybacks! Do I know who that little bird was?

Happy Birthday Mary!!!

Mary says: Thanks, MHodges! Yes, we do know what they say about paybacks and since I know who the little bird was AND who told the little bird in the first place, you better watch out! :->

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 - 11:08 am:

Happy Birthday, Mary!!

On your webpage that's an incredible photo of the Calumet theater proscenium! Is it possible to get for the 2007 calendar?

By lz (Llamamama) on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 - 11:22 am:

Happy Birthday Mary! And I raise my cup (coffee of course) to fifty more!

Deb S, I am going to have to borrow that "growing old is mandatory, growing up is optional" phrase - love it!

It is the Tulip Festival in Holland, MI this week. Thousands of tulips and dancers in wooden shoes.

Happy Birthday Mary!

By lookielu (Eyeswideshut) on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 - 02:17 pm:

Mikie instead of paying for those Ohmaha Steak hotdogs, spend the money on getting a direct shipment from Vollworth's. The shipping cost is a little pricey but definately well worth it. And considering the price and cost of shipping the Omaha Steak brand well I think Vollworths is by far the tastiest deal. Yum yum Yum. See Vollworths website, linked on the sponsers homepage. Get some now just in time to grill for mother's day or memorial day. Fire up the grill!!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 - 03:04 pm:

Llamamama, Use it all you want. I love that expression. At our ages we have to come up with an excuse to act the way we do.

Modges, You know exactly who that little bird was. It was nice of her, wasn't it? I hope you and your family are doing well. It's been a while. Haven't seen you on here before. Have a great day!

Happy happy happy birthday! Past 50 is the best time of life!

I guess I bring up the tail end but I do hope you had a great birthday Mary!

By Charlotte, Mishawaka, IN (Charlotte61) on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 - 09:02 pm:

Fran, you're not the last. Happy Birthday, Mary. Hope the day has been really great. After all it's not every day you become old enough to join AARP.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 - 09:40 pm:

Yooper, Love the cake! Great job! Wish I knew how you did that.

Charlotte, Good one. How I wish I'd thought of it. Being 50 ain't bad though. And it definitely beats the alternative. I'd rather be over the hill than under it any day.

Good night everyone (except Sur5er and maybe Beverly, you guys have a great chat tonight).

By Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 - 10:08 pm:

Wow, thanks everyone...this is the perfect ending to a perfect day exploring the Keweenaw. Hungarian Falls were gushing with all the rain from yesterday, then we tried to find the Natural Wall, but no luck on that, maybe next time. So far so good, 50 doesn't feel any different than 49 did yesterday! :->
As for the AARP card, I've actually been carrying one for a few years now, since a spouse gets one when the other half turns 50, it's just that now I'm going to have to admit that it's really mine and not just the hubby's!

By Downstatedon (Downstatedon) on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 - 10:16 pm:

Happy Birthday Mary Drew
Hope to see you this summer at the Hut. Glad you
had a eventful day.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 - 10:16 pm:

In less then two hours someone else will be celebrating his birthday. he will be sixtythree.Born during a snow storm in 1943, when the doctor came his sister and brother asked the doctor to check out the dog since it wasn't feeling good. At 6:30 am little ----- was born. Momma said no one can touch my little boy. He grew up and was a Momma's boy until she went to her final resting place. His younger brother, the great sage, still calls him Momma's boy. Not trying to get in on Mary's parade, but he will be up most of the night watching Antiques Road Show.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 - 10:51 pm:

Night night Usedtobeayooper...and Beverly and I will 'try' to behave ourselves tonight. Honest. Okay, so sorta kind. :)

Mary, glad to hear that you enjoyed your birthday.

Happy Birthday Mikie!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So you're gonna pull an all nighter, in front of the tube, eh. Is Precious making you a birthday cake...or is she going to leave the baking up to you?
That's too funny about your sister and brother wanting the doctor to check the dog, instead of your mom who was laboring to have you. ROFL.

By Downstatedon (Downstatedon) on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 - 10:57 pm:

Happy Birthday to you too, MAMA'S BOY!! Hope you
got something exciting going on!

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 - 11:04 pm:

My daughter Dannielle is making me a snickerdoodle birthday cake and we are celebrating on Sunday. Saturday night the church is having a big celebration for me [the annual auction] at least I prefer to think that they are gathering for me. I hope that tonight on the Roadshow that I will see something that I own that is worth a lot of money. My greatest possesion and the most valuable part of my life is my Precious. I don't know if a wife can be a possesion or not, but she is my greatest asset. And she isn't giving me any thing for my birthday since that is what I want.I told my kids not to buy me anything either.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 - 11:19 pm:

Mikie, I have found that as I get older...and thus wiser, that the thing I ask for most as presents, is time with my family. For instance, when my daughter asked me what I wanted for Mother's Day, I told her that I didn't want a present...but wanted to spend a day with her just doing girlie girl things . So she is setting aside a day, just for me :)
Too funny about you claiming the Auction, as your birthday celebration. Thanks ok...I must admit, that with my birthday a week after the 4th of July, that I like to consider the 4th of July as my birthday celebration ;)

By eugenia r. thompson (Ert) on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 - 11:29 pm:

Just remembered it's the anniversary of a 10" snowfall that I saw on May 10 in the UP. Quite a shock to a young GA girl in 1967!

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 - 11:39 pm:

My wife's birthday is on July 30 and she celebrates all month long. I had a great time at all three of my kids weddings, and am lucky to like all three of my in law kids. Thier parents are friends now and everyone gathers at our house for holidays. I am lucky enough to enjoy the companionship of my kids. It has been nice on this site to be able to enjoy the people on here who are so intelligent and know so much about the area that I am from. Even though I have lived in Berkley for most of my life, I think of Hubbell as my home. Mary I envy your trip to the Hungarian falls today.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Thursday, May 11, 2006 - 01:35 am:

Good night one and all.

By Beverly, San Jose (Beverly) on Thursday, May 11, 2006 - 01:35 am:

Happy Birthday Mary and Mikie. Mikie, what do you mean your wife isn't giving you anything. She gives of herself all year long...what greater gift could you receive.
Well, sur5er...I guess we have something in common. My birthday is on July 13...every year. :)

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Thursday, May 11, 2006 - 02:13 am:

Night night, Mikie...sweet dreams :)

Wow Beverly, what a cowinkiedink that we were born two days apart, eh :) I say that we designate the entire summer as our birthday.
Yeeeeeeeeeee haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaw!

This summer, I will be up in northern Michigan for my birthday...and hopefully we will be able to at least get up to St.Ignace so I can get a slice of Hot Fudge Icecream cake, for my birthday, from Big Boys :)

By Beverly, San Jose (Beverly) on Thursday, May 11, 2006 - 02:37 am:

W O W that sounds like a plan. You spend your summer UP NORT and I will spend mine in Maui. The nice thing about Maui, we don't have any pink
flamingos over there :) but we do have alot of strawberry daiquiris.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Thursday, May 11, 2006 - 03:15 am:

Oh yeah, it's Strawberry Daiquiri season :) Let the summer begin :) Bring on the sunshine and daiquris :)

You know Beverly, I was going to ask you...Kohls has their smoothie makers on sale...and I was wondering, could those babies double as instant Strawberry Daiquiri makers...cutting out the time it takes for having to freeze the daiquiri mix? Just a thought. Maybe we're onto something, eh.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, May 11, 2006 - 07:08 am:

Why did you have to mention strawberry daiquiris? That is my very favorite alcoholic drink! I have to say that a good fuzzy navel is delicious too and for dessert----a yummy brandy alexander. Yum Yum!!!!! Let's go! There's a bar right across from the bank. We'll go celebrate our birthdays. Mine's August 8 and I say that's close enough to you guys. Summer kids are the best, aren't they?

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, May 11, 2006 - 07:11 am:

Oh yeah, Happy Birthday Mikie! May you have many more. Hope you enjoyed the tube, but Antiques Road Show? I'm sure there were a couple of good episodes of CSI or something on.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Thursday, May 11, 2006 - 07:50 am:

Happy Birthday Mikie. Of course you think of
yourself as a Yooper. Once a Yooper, always
a Yooper.

Sur5er--OOhh. I've never had a Hot Fudge Ice
Cream cake. Will have to remedy that. Maybe
I'll celebrate my half birthday there in July.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Thursday, May 11, 2006 - 11:27 am:

I love strawberry daiquires. Make them for Precious all the time. So far I have had some bad news, seems that I forgot to go to the monthly reunion last night and they had a cake for me there, guess thats what being 63 does to you. I also like the regular daiquires, maybe just a little more. And what about the margeritas [sp] love that salt. I seem to watch Law and Order all day long,CSI is too gory for me. Besides I had a crush on Olivia Bensons mother when I was a kid. Now everyone has to find out who her mom was.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Thursday, May 11, 2006 - 11:43 am:

Usedtobeayooper, It's a date :) I say we start celebrating from the 4th of July right on through the summer, just to make sure we don't miss anyone's birthday ;)

Kosk, Oh yeah, you have to try Big Boy's Hot Fudge Icecream cake. Oooooooooooo laaaaaaaaa laaaaaaaa!

Mikie, Beverly and I found out that if you go to the paint department at Lowes that they have these neat little white paint buckets, complete with a lid and handle, that make great Strawberry Daquiri buckets...that are a perfect fit for the freezer. That way you don't have to make the daiquiris individually each time, and make all that mess in the kitchen. You just make a huge batch...freeze it in the bucket..and you're set for at least a day or two ;) Beverly and I call them "Party In A Bucket". :)
