A sandy connection between today's shot of the kids, and the beachhouse from 8 years ago. This is the cabin at Camp Gitche Gumee's waterfront, as Edie and I spent some time that day opening it up during spring cleaning week.

We talked with some of the crew yesterday over at Gitche Gumee, as cleaning is in full swing again this year. During the past 8 years this Eagle River Camp has been the source of many daily glimpses of life in the U.P. here on the Pasty Cam. A fun place to spend some time in person, too.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, April 25, 2006 - 07:09 am:

I don't know about summer. It's about 30 degrees here this morning. After such a beautiful weekend, it's a slap in the face. But that hot dog roast looks like SO much fun!!! I can NOT wait!!!!

Ditto on the Sunrise Side! 70's still at 8pm last night and snowing this morning! Ugh!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Tuesday, April 25, 2006 - 08:05 am:

I wish it was in the 70's here at 8pm. I drove in this morning at a very humid 75, at 6am!! The weatherman is saying scattered strong T-storms by 2pm; should make the commute interesting this afternoon. I miss the days when the biggest traffic jam was the liftbridge going up and it backed up all of 50 cars ;-)

Mornin Everyone! Wow, that hotdog roast is making me get so excited for summer. I cannot wait for a hotdog roast at Agate Beach. I took a ride there two weeks ago and just sat in the car and listened to the waves. The smell was awesome.

Morning everyone. Bishop Richard Ingalls from the Mariner's Church in Detroit passed away yesterday morning. He had suffered from a stroke 3 weeks ago. He is the man who rang the church bells for the 29 men on the Edmund Fitzgerald on the night the Fitz & her crew were lost. By his actions a song was wrote & recorded by Gordon Lightfoot that made the Fitzgerald the legend that it is today. We have the Fitzgerald Bell, the only link us family members have to our men. Bishop Ingalls consecrated the wrecksite of the Fitzgerald & performed a funeral that the men had never had. He made it a Consecrated gravesite like one which would be on land. He also helped to convince the Canadian Government to pass a law declaring the site a LEGAL gravesite. All of the these things happened because of his love & respect for mariners to whom he devoted his life. My family & I were able to develop a relationship with him & his wonderful family. He was a man who befriended, loved & respected all Fitzgerald families. I never met a man that I respected more than him. He will certainly be missed but I have great memories of him. We know that he is now with the Lord that he has served all of his life. His funeral is at the Mariner's Church on May 13th at 11:00 AM.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, April 25, 2006 - 12:37 pm:

Cotton, I am so sorry about the bishop. I will remember him in my prayers. I know how highly you thought of him. My sympathies! And yes, we bought the Gordon Lightfoot album just for that song. We listen to it often. Now when I listen it I won't be able to do so without thinking about your bishop.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Tuesday, April 25, 2006 - 05:25 pm:

Cotton: I hope the bells toll for Bishop Ingalls.
Many of us will be remembering him on May
13th. Like my favorite Yevtushenko poem,
"People," says:

"by the rules of the game something has
gone.
Not people die but worlds die in them."

Some of his worlds will go on a long
time..while so many remember his fine
deeds.

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Tuesday, April 25, 2006 - 07:40 pm:

Well, the day went down hill from the wee morning hours. We had our first drug bust in three years at my school. Yes, we have offenders in my school, but we have done so good lately. Then one of my favorite kids calls and says he's going to be a dad. What a day.

By Lorelei (Lorelei) on Tuesday, April 25, 2006 - 08:34 pm:

Wow, Margaret. I am sorry your having such a bad day. I hope tomorrow is better for you and that the kids in your school realize how much you care. The world needs more people like you, Margaret.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Tuesday, April 25, 2006 - 09:40 pm:

Margaret-- I'm so sorry to hear your news.
Sadly, I have had days like yours, Days when
CAS (Children's Aid Society) has had to come
and apprehend a child, days when a child's
parent has landed in jail for abusive or
addictive behavior. Days when I've held a
child's hand and prayed that a restraint
wouldn't be necessary. It's draining. Maybe
things will get a little better in the morning...
Remember: YOU do make a difference!

By Ms. Katie (Mskatie) on Tuesday, April 25, 2006 - 09:53 pm:

Loreli...How fortunate that you can enjoy the sounds and smells of the great Lake! I envy you. And Cotton, I'm sorry that the bishop has passed But oh what a wonderful influence his life must have made to others. Peace be to him....And Margaret, I'm so sorry your school has been soiled by todays happenings. How lucky that school has people like you that love and care for the young people. I'm sure you are a wonderful example to the children. Especially seeing how you've handled you illness. Bless you and your fellow teachers who care.
