Some serious Yooper four-wheeling on the Pasty Cam back in 1998 on tax day. Actually it's a shot Jonathan grabbed on his way heading toward the Lift Bridge that morning. Again, reviewing the primary reason we started the feature - What would we want to see if we couldn't be here? - this certainly qualifies as a genuine 'glimpse of life in the U.P.'

Some of my fondest memories of living here are the times I spent with Jonathan and Becky exploring every corner of the Keweenaw Peninsula. Sometimes on foot, sometimes on skis... and occasionally covering lots of ground quicker on snowmobile or four-wheeler.

Over the years we've had some lively discussion on these pages about recreational vehicles. In my view, it all comes down to being a good neighbor. Actually, I think the gentleman in the 4/15/98 photo was part of a spring cleanup work crew, not intentionally out for recreation. Demanding work, but somebody's got to do it.

more tomorrow

Hope everybody has a Happy Easter! It's time for coloring eggs today and making potatoes for potato salad with ham. Yum Yum! We'll not mention that other necessary evil that happens this weekend.

Mikie, I hope your grandson is feeling better soon. Make sure he's tested for Crohn's disease. I have it and it's not a lot of fun. I went through a period where I couldn't keep anything in me and had to be put in the hospital so they could hydrate me. I hope he doesn't have it at this young an age though. We'll all be praying for him. I'm sure everybody's going to church tomorrow. We could all light a candle for him.

Sur5er, The earliest I was brave enough to swim in THE LAKE was Memorial weekend. Believe me, that is NOT something I would every consider doing again. I feel brave going in in July and August. Nobody around here will even consider it. They're not YOOPERS, that's why. We're tough!

By PAUL (Pungvait) on Saturday, April 15, 2006 - 09:33 am:

Charlie - the fella on the honda tractor is my good buddy Harlowe - he's just sitting back, enjoying the scenery.
changing the subject, does anybody know if Brockway is open yet?

By stix (Stixoutwest) on Saturday, April 15, 2006 - 10:29 am:

Is Harlowe still around? I would see him sitting on the Houghton side watching all the traffic.I don't recall seeing him last summer! What a great mode of transportation. Out here in Az. some young families actually use golf carts to whip around the neighborhood, take the kids to McDonald's (have to go on a busy road so they are licensed!) and to school. With gas prices, that's looking like a pretty good idea!!
Have a great day.

By PAUL (Pungvait) on Saturday, April 15, 2006 - 10:43 am:

yes, Harlowe's just as around as always - who should i tell him said hi?

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Saturday, April 15, 2006 - 10:57 am:

Thanks to all my pals at Pasty cam. My friend Joyce died yesterday. We called her "the queen" but she was much more royal than that. Again, thanks for the support.

By stix (Stixoutwest) on Saturday, April 15, 2006 - 11:37 am:

Oh, Harlowe wouldn't know me. I just got a kick out of watching him.....watch all of us while sitting on his machine!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Saturday, April 15, 2006 - 11:54 am:

Margaret, My condolences on the loss of your friend. I know how hard it is to lose a friend. No doubt she's in a better place, but the ones who are left behind are the ones that are hurting. Time will ease the pain, but our hearts go out to you anyway.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Saturday, April 15, 2006 - 03:58 pm:

Usedtobeayooper, What a wonderful and thoughtful idea of having us light a candle for Mikie's grandson, Joseph. I will definately light a candle tomorrow.
Hope you are taking care of your health ;)
And the earliest I have been in the lake: mid May...but only up to my knees...and I swear I saw ice chunks still floating in the lake :)

Stix, I bet that golf cart gets better mileage than my truck...sigh. One of my neighbors has a golf cart, and it's cute to see the teenagers go 'cruisin' through the 'hood' on summer evenings...they look and sound as though they are having so much fun.

Margaret, ((((((((((((((((((HUGS))))))))))))).

By dave sou (Davesou) on Saturday, April 15, 2006 - 05:31 pm:

that's one hting i loved about the UP...you could go crusin round the neighborhood in stuff...whatever motor vehicle you could concoct or whatever...

down here, you can't even ride a go cart around without getting a ticket.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Saturday, April 15, 2006 - 06:58 pm:

Where is Mikie today? I was hoping to get an update on little Joseph. It's so hard watching a sick child. There is nothing worse in the world. Whenever my grandchildren are sick I'm constantly calling to find out how they are. I used to have them every day and when they were sick I could hardly stand it. I hope he's alright. Did his daughter have her baby yet?

By JanieT (Bobbysgirl) on Saturday, April 15, 2006 - 07:48 pm:

Charlie, that is your daughter Becky, right? Our daughter also had many a fun times riding around the farm on our quad-runner! A helmet and common sense makes for safe fun!

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Saturday, April 15, 2006 - 08:29 pm:

Hello, I have been getting ready for Easter it was supposed to be at my daughters but since Joseph is still having problems everything has been changed to my house, I have been cleaning and cooking all day. No baby yet even though Kelly is having contractions. My daughter Dani is asleep now was up all night with the baby. My grandaughter who is thirteen has been helping all day. joseph will be going to the Dr. on monday and he is to have more test. Thanks everyone who is concerned.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Saturday, April 15, 2006 - 09:09 pm:

Count me in as concerned Mikie. I will say
prayers for Joseph at church tomorrow.

Blessed Easter to everyone. There will be joy
and sorrow at our house. The joy of a
wonderful time of the whole family together in
one place and the sorrow of knowing that that
won't be the case for a long time. Both of our
children fly out tomorrow.

Keep the faith and Count your blessings
friends.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Saturday, April 15, 2006 - 09:14 pm:

Kosk, Count your blessings tomorrow and keep the faith that you will all be together again soon. This war has to be over pretty soon. The world is tired of it I think. But we will support our soldiers for as long as we have to and we thank them. For you and all of the families with loved ones over there, God's speed! Happy Easter!

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Saturday, April 15, 2006 - 10:43 pm:

Happy Easter to all.
Hello to you Deb S. It has been a long time, back in $Bay on the 4th.around 86 or so.I remember I was with wife # 3 back then you met.Good to see you on here! Because of this site it has put me in touch with so many old U.P. friends.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Saturday, April 15, 2006 - 11:01 pm:

David, I don't have a clue as to who you are. I don't remember being in the UP in '86. My 4th son was born in February of that year and we had just moved to MN on July 1st and I KNOW I wasn't UP there. Refresh my memory!

By Beverly, San Jose (Beverly) on Sunday, April 16, 2006 - 03:31 am:

Dave H. Saw your portrait in your profile...Is that a Halo around your head, or is your head still in the fog? (Couldn't resist. :) )

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Sunday, April 16, 2006 - 05:11 am:

Well, since it's 'ask Dave' time, I was going to ask him if he is Native American...my daughter is Native American, and I thought I saw some features in his pic.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Sunday, April 16, 2006 - 11:37 am:

Somewhere in that 3/4 Finn part, many of us (I
am also 3/4 Finn ) have some Sami blood.
Maybe that's what you're seeing Sur5er.

That's cool about your daughter. My daughter
is also part Native--Ojibway.

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Sunday, April 16, 2006 - 12:08 pm:

Well Deb S. My name say's it all.You said long time no talk to,so it made me think you was Deb L. befor you got married, she also became a Deb S. But if Cheboy is not your Dad then you are not who i thought you were, Sorry. My Great Grampa on Mother side was Native French Indian,as was told to me.My picture was taken in the Smoky's with my head in the clouds, cool eh?

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, April 16, 2006 - 12:26 pm:

Hey Dave, I'm not so good with names. But I didn't think I knew who you were. The Dave I was referring to was Davesou who is my cousin. We met on this site after years of not seeing each other. I haven't talked to him in a while and I will have to remedy that. No, Cheboy is not my dad. And yes, that is very cool. Either way, I consider everybody on this site a friend, and that includes you. So, now we know each other. Nice to meet you.

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Sunday, April 16, 2006 - 07:34 pm:

If Davesou is your cousin Deb then your unccle used to cut my hair in Houghton when i was a kid.Nice to meet you in this way.I hope all out there had a good day, hello Fran in Ga.
