Marquette Harbor appeared for the first time on the Pasty Cam eight years ago today. Through the years we have had many shots from Marquette and other towns across the U.P. But some how the original name "Keweenaw Pasty Cam" stuck on this daily feature.

We were back in Marquette this past weekend, and had a chance to visit Presque Isle. The waves on the breakwall were awesome, splashing maybe 20 feet into the air. Driving back down the main street I remembered the days of the Bunny Bread bakery, and those memorable neon ears you could always see from the US-41 bypass. Lots of good memories for us, all over the U.P.

Good Morning to all!
First Post

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, April 6, 2006 - 08:25 am:

Morning everybody! I've been waiting for the picture for about an hour and a half now. It was worth the wait.

Thanks pasty.com for reconnecting me with one of my cousins. We've now e-mailed and it's great to get back in touch with someone that you haven't seen since your teen years. What a great website.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Thursday, April 6, 2006 - 08:31 am:

One of you yesterday said you were sorry for the private conversation. It was actually cool to "see" you reconnect!

By P&G,TN (Gormfrog) on Thursday, April 6, 2006 - 08:32 am:

How are the "New Year's Resolution Diets" coming along??
Lets stop at a doughnut shop this morning and order only coffee!

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Thursday, April 6, 2006 - 08:54 am:

Good morning everyone :)

Marsha, I saw that same post with the apology, and I couldn't figure out why they apologized either ;) I think it's great when people can reconnect with family members and old friends on Pasty Cam.

Usedtobeayooper, Great to hear that you found your cousin here :)

Gormfrog, Trust me, I have tried going into the local donut shop and ordering only coffee...but in my case, it doesn't work, since my hubby delivers to the store and we thus know the owner. I go in for just a coffee, and the next thing I know, the owner is thrusting a box full of donuts in my hand.
And well, you know how it goes from that point on, "I guess one donut won't hurt me," followed by, "it's such a shame to let the rest of those donuts go to waste."

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Thursday, April 6, 2006 - 08:55 am:

Gormfrog, Does the See Food Diet count? You know, whatever food you see, you eat ;)

By FJL (Langoman) on Thursday, April 6, 2006 - 09:35 am:

The reason for the apology is that it took place on the picture page not on the "whats up" page, as per the rules format....

By P&G,TN (Gormfrog) on Thursday, April 6, 2006 - 09:43 am:

Sur5er..
Counts for us..the battle goes on.
A dieter is a person who goes to grest lengths to avoid great widths...
But said donut, if it is a donut with soul,
with a spirit,
has only one reason for being:
to be deliciuos.

By kzoocathy (Loulou) on Thursday, April 6, 2006 - 10:08 am:

Yes, usedtobeyooper.....it was great to "see" you reconnect !! I
have cousins that if they knocked on my front door, I wouldn't
know who they were !! Sur5er..Donuts are the "fruit" of life !!
Can't live without them !

Where's the smoke coming from on Sharon's 11:48 webcam pic? Hope it's just someone burning brush. Anyone know?

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Thursday, April 6, 2006 - 12:02 pm:

sur5er, I just figured out what your handle is.I am a little slow on the uptake.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Thursday, April 6, 2006 - 12:27 pm:

Sharon said in her latest journal entry that they are doing their spring cleaning at the nearby campground and burning brush.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, April 6, 2006 - 12:35 pm:

Marsha & Sur5er, Thanks for thinking it was cool for my cousin and I to reconnect. I don't think he should have apologized either, but since he did I didn't want to continue on this website so just e-mailed him and he e-mailed back. It's great when you can reconnect with someone you haven't seen in nearly 40 years.

By allen philley (Allen) on Thursday, April 6, 2006 - 01:17 pm:

Its nice to see a photo of the ore dock with the approach trestle still intact.

By Susan Lahti (Finn_in_texas) on Thursday, April 6, 2006 - 02:48 pm:

It just warms my heart when I see long lost relatives reconnect here. Same thing happened with me, got in contact with cousins on both side of my family. I let others know of this site when appropriate too. I was at Costco in Austin yesterday, and a man was talking to the pharmacy tech, teaching her a phrase in Finnish, I discover. I perked up when I heard that. Found out one of his parents was born in Houghton. This was a pretty quick conversation, but I managed to let him know about this web site. Who knows who he will find, or who will find him!
By the way, the phrase he was teaching her he says is a common Finnish greeting. In English, it is "How is your belly button?" I need to remember to ask Mom about that one. Anyways, it's not very often that I run into another Finn down here in Texas.

By Betty Paull Colborn,AZ (Betty) on Thursday, April 6, 2006 - 03:08 pm:

Congratulations Tim! You finally got the 'early bird'......

By dave sou (Davesou) on Thursday, April 6, 2006 - 05:15 pm:

hello...and hi to my long lost cousin, Deb S. :)

I apologized because I know its better to talk about the topic at hand, and am surely happy Deb sent an email.

40 years ?

Well that surely says a mouthful. No wonder my bones are starting to hurt, although mentally I'm still 16. hmmmmmmmm ....that may not be so good either.

Now how many other lost friends and relatives are around here?

I left the UP right after I graduated and lost contact with almost everyone from up there, and my trips back are usually just a day or so...its hard to try and see everyone so its normally the immediate relatives and then its time to go back to Wisconsin

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, April 6, 2006 - 07:28 pm:

Dave, Where in Wisconsin do you live? I asked my parents today but they didn't know. Sure is good to get back in touch! Will e-mail you when I have more time.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Thursday, April 6, 2006 - 07:56 pm:

Finn in Texas-- I used to know a Finnish
phrase that meant "Smell my belly button".
Not elegant, and probably incorrectly spelled:
"Haista naapa." Well, I'm sure there are
double vowels in there somewhere.

Japai-- I have never seen a squirrel with ears
the size of those in your last set of pictures.
Are those typical Finnish squirrels?

Does anyone else remember singing the
"Bunny Bread Song"--"That's what I said,
bunny bread?

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Thursday, April 6, 2006 - 08:14 pm:

Charlie--

I just read the article about Still Waters in the
Mining Gazette online. I had no idea that
government funding for assisted living was so
difficult to get. You did an excellent job of
describing the plight of Still Waters. Thank
you.

Where do we send our donations? Would you
please post the address?

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Thursday, April 6, 2006 - 09:33 pm:

Mikie, That's ok that you just figured out what my screen name means...a lot of people think it's 'surfer' ;)
Here's a website for you to check out, for some great recipes: www.topsecretrecipes.com

Davesou and Usedtobeayooper, I still think that is so awesome...gives the rest of us that warm cozy feeling ;)

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Thursday, April 6, 2006 - 10:11 pm:

I wish that I could be as creative as a lot of people on the site. All my life someone has called me Mikie. I have found and have comunicated with several cousins who are on this site on occasion. Also an old comrade from the sixties. I like the fact that I can brag about my family and you all read it. Kind of sad isn't it? By the way Kelly, my daughter in law is in labor as of now, wish her luck and cousin MJ pray for her. Will be eighth grandchild, a boy named Jack Du Long. I still have a hard time getting used to the child being named before he is born.

By Seismic Pirate (Marc) on Thursday, April 6, 2006 - 10:25 pm:

Mikie,
Not sad you can brag about your family on here-rather the opposite, actually. Family is the most important thing in the world and something you can truely brag about. My children are absolutely my best work, ever. I will never do anthing as important, worthwhile or fulfilling in my lifetime. Brag all you want;)
Btw, my sons computer teacher at Houghton High just eamiled me his grades for the marking period-all A's...

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Thursday, April 6, 2006 - 10:33 pm:

Marc, You always will love your children, You are lucky when you can admire them, but even luckier if you can like them also. My kids are all hero's in my eyes.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Thursday, April 6, 2006 - 10:36 pm:

congratulations on the all A's He must be an exceptional son.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, April 6, 2006 - 10:52 pm:

Kosk, I so remember that song. Seeing the bread bag didn't even click with me until you "sang" that song. There were so many commercials back in the day that come back to me every so often. They just don't make 'em like they used to.
Sur5er, Thanks again! It's great to have met up with him again. There's a story there. Maybe some time we'll let you in on it.

By dave sou (Davesou) on Thursday, April 6, 2006 - 11:14 pm:

Deb...
I was living in Madison, after a long time in the military...actually its a real adventure since I left Chassell...
why not...here we go....Sheboygan Wis..then 4 years Air Force...Texas, Massachusetts, Vietnam, Texas...
then to Illinois..then back to Sheboygan...
then into the Navy...Great Lakes, Newport Rhode Island, Denver, Puerto Rico, and 4 years in Maine.
Then Madison...now Two Rivers, which is just south of Green Bay about 40 miles.

Its been quite fun...a bit rough on the family, but we've enjoyed it overall.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Thursday, April 6, 2006 - 11:26 pm:

Dave what a ride. I got stuck living in Berkley Michigan for the last forty years.Got to travel a lot but the family always stayed home.It would have been a lot nicer to have my family with me when I was far from Berkley, not as lonely. Worst Christmas was when I was in Germany and they were here.Holidays away from home are always sad.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Thursday, April 6, 2006 - 11:41 pm:

Marc, I couldn't have said it any better. As Judge Costello used to tell me, "the most important job we will ever do in our lifetime, is raising our children".

Congrats Grampa Mikie! Of course you have bragging rights...you're a parent and a grandparent. We wouldn't expect anything less ;)

Usedtobeayooper, Can't wait for the 'rest of the story' :)

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Friday, April 7, 2006 - 06:56 am:

Usedtobeayooper--

Me either!

Seismic Pirate--I always send a copy of report
cards to the "non-custodial" parents in my
class. My guys aren't so lucky as your kids to
have a dad who is only away because of work.
In a couple of cases, the dads have been in
jail--I wonder if they bragged about their kids
there. Maybe it gave them hope that things
would be better in the next generation.

Mikie--Congrats on becoming a grandpa
again.

Sur5er-- Is that #!?! report done yet? Hope
so.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Friday, April 7, 2006 - 07:15 am:

Kosk, Thanks for asking...I'm in the home stretch, and will be getting some of this paperwork posted today. Yeeeeeee haaaaaaaaaw :)

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, April 7, 2006 - 07:44 am:

Oh my GOSH Dave! I had no idea you were even in Vietnam! Nobody ever told me. That's sad. How do families grow apart like that? Sounds like you've done a lot of traveling. I've done some, but nothing like that. The family consists of? I have 4 sons and a step-son, 3 grandchildren and 2 step-grandchildren. The grandchildren are so much fun. I love my kids, but can actually enjoy the grandchildren. I have more time for them than I did for the boys when they were growing up. I actually took care of them from the time the older 2 were born until they started school. That was an adventure. Hated to see them in daycare. They're not loved there. But now the time I spend with them taking them to movies and having them spend the night seems more special. They say grandchildren are our reward for not killing our own children. lol Sometimes I think that's true. So, everybody out there that's proud of their family, that's a normal thing. What greater accomplishment can we claim in life? Anyway Dave, I'm glad you made it home from Vietnam and we have a lot of catching up to do.

By Candy Goulette (Cagoulet) on Friday, April 7, 2006 - 04:55 pm:

OK, question for all of you (Charlie, you, too!): The Gazette story today said Charlie was the former administrator at Still Waters. Who has taken over that huge responsibility now? I didn't think I had been out of touch for so long!
