The Old Country Haus - gone but not forgotten (from the Pasty Cam in 1998). It's still for sale in Kearsarge if you're interested. We have been asked if Pasty Central plans to reopen it when we open the Hut this summer. (Both restaurants closed at the same time, almost 2 years ago, and at the time it was known as Patrick's Pub and Pasty). The two establishments no longer have any connection. For an update on the work at the Hut, see the current Progress Report. When we passed through Kearsarge yesterday, the other building was still socked in with snow, and doesn't appear to be opening any time soon.

Did you year the Kaleva in Hancock should be re-opening next May? Best wishes to the Beauchamps as they seek to put another landmark back on the map. The Kaleva has appeared from time to time on the Pasty Cam over the past 8 years, too.

Good morning everyone :) Looks like another cloudy day here...and with a possibility of some rain. Would be nice if we had some thunderstorms.

Good Morning Everyone! 33 degress here in Houghton. Best of Luck to the Beauchamps for
re-opening the Kaleva. Sandy was a high school
classmate of mine, a fine person! Have a great day.

Charlie - Here is a shoe box picture I just descovered last week on the inside of the back cover of an old family album! It is the 1920 Calumet football team with good detail and I bet someone from the school could put names to the faces and find that most of their families are still connected to the area?

......Seems the High School year book would have the names.......when did George Gipp play for Calumet? I think we need to know the names...very interesting picture.

By Donald R. Elzinga (Donagain) on Sunday, April 2, 2006 - 11:33 am:

As strange as it may seem George Gipp didn't play High School football!

By Mary Lou Curtin (Marylou) on Sunday, April 2, 2006 - 11:56 am:

Don.... do you know if this is a high school team?...or a city-team??......I just read that George Gipp played "sandlot" football...I bet Mike Medved of Calumet would know these young guys......Mike is a Calumet native, 95yr old and sharp as can be.....he just sold his house and moved into senior housing in Calumet.....

By Mary Lou Curtin (Marylou) on Sunday, April 2, 2006 - 12:26 pm:

PS:....I am guessing ....that the fellow in the middle of the back row is a "Dion"...there are still Dions in Lake Linden....maybe Mary Drew could ask Bobby or one of the others....

By Donald R. Elzinga (Donagain) on Sunday, April 2, 2006 - 12:30 pm:

The wording under the picture just says 1920 Calumet football team? If there wasn't a highschool team then, it may well be the sandlot team! The 1920 yearbook could clear this up, or perhaps Mike Medved would know

By Mary Lou Curtin (Marylou) on Sunday, April 2, 2006 - 12:59 pm:

Mary Drew....could you copy this picture and give it to Gloria to give to Mary Medved Miller to ask her dad what he knows of the Calumet Football team of 1920??....love to know who these young guys are and what the story is....Mary's dad is a marvel.......Thank you

By Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Sunday, April 2, 2006 - 07:04 pm:

I received this photo in my email today with the note below, from Mary Lou Studer-Curtin. She asked me to post it for her.....

This is my football picture est 1920....probably Lake Linden but may be that some of the fellas were on the Calumet team too. Hard to read the names on the back but I will try:
Left to right Back row: Jim D??,Fritz Gleasner, W. Richards, H Burr??, J. Pflugi, Brisson.
Middle Row:..W?,... Sam Studer (my uncle), H Soddy,J Williams, D Jacker, H. Perrong.
Bottom row: ? Etier, "Bum" Dion, Reuben Hancock, Stu Pearson.
Thanks..Mary Lou Studer-Curtin
