Traveling along the shores of Lake Superior isn't an easy task during the snowy months of winter here in the U.P., but Roy Aho found a way to do it on a recent trip. Roy hails from Texas nowadays, but he loves to come "home" for a visit this time of year and hop on a snowmobile to check out his family cabin in the Freda area. This shot was taken near the mouth of the Graveraet River, looking north. Off in the distance you can see the smokestack that has appeared on these pages a number of times, but from a closer and different angle.

Freda stack

Great shot. Just made it my background.

is that stack left from the freda stamp mill? is there a nice beach
made of stamp sand like up in gay? i've never explored the copper
country south of the lift bridge.

Wow! The picture brings back some distant memories. If it's the same smokestack that's down by Redridge near the Salmon Trout River. I used to throw into the lake the biggest logs I could find and tell my english setter, Judy, to retrieve them. She would jump in no matter how big the waves were and bring them back. Absolutely the most fearless dog I ever owned. The steelhead fishing was great on the Salmon Trout just below the steel dam during the Spring. I'll be back one of these days.

A familiar sight although I've never seen it in winter. It appears the photo was taken from near the mouth of the Graveraet River. It's a beautiful spot and I photographed it myself the last time I took a ride out there back in August of 1971. As recall, the trout fishing is pretty good, too.

Roland and Regina Manty of Atlantic Mine bought a summer cottage out there back in 1960 and I remember visiting them with my parents as a little kid. The roadway from Freda ran down along the side of the hill and then directly into the Freda Mill itself - in one door and then out the other side through the woods along the shoreline. As a kid, I was amazed at this and there were probably a few grownups who were, too.

Wow sure looks cold.Almost looks like a black and white shot.We have tried to find this stack a few times with no luck.By the way Nate(nalwine) we enjoyed your comments on Kentucky the other day.

John, Yes, that's the Freda stack. My uncle owns a lot of that land down there and we're there nearly every summer. If you get up near Freda go to the Superior View restaurant at the top of the hill. My cousin Clyde owns it and does most of the cooking and the food is excellent. Tell him his cousin Deb sent you. You won't be sorry. They have wonderful Lake Trout. And yes, the sand is stamp sand as it is out by Gay. That sand is so dirty looking but it comes right off just like the beautiful sandy beaches in other areas of Lake Superior. No matter where you go, there's nothing like that lake.

By the way, I too have a great picture of that stack. And not too far away is the covered road where you can get some great shots too. And down by the lake there are wonderful thimbleberries which we make terrific jam out of every year. MMM MMM GOOD!

In October, I took a drive to Gay to walk the beach like I have done for many years. Low and behold, the beach is all blocked off by the County or Township with No trespassing signs everywhere....so that habit has been thwarted.

Nice shot, Roy!! Be careful on the ladder

By Scott Deprest (12retire) on Friday, March 10, 2006 - 02:06 pm:

I thought I recognized that stack. We've been down the covered road in the fall and it is outstanding. I have never seen the superior view restuarant open. If I remember correctly, its kinda at the end of the road. There's a place around back (lakeside) that looks out over the bluff where you can see some islands sometimes. Not today though.

Isn't that stamp sand an environmental hazard and has toxins leaching into the Lake?
