Brockway Mountain revisited. That's the subject of today's Pasty Cam shots. Back on Feb. 24th, we took a trip part way up the Mountain on snowshoes. Today's pictures were taken by Michael Musiel, the guy who does the wind/solar for Pasty.net's Wireless DSL. He was up performing some routine maintenance and happened to have a camera along, so he's treating us to a winter view from the top, another from just about midpoint, looking down and the last one from the spot overlooking downtown Copper Harbor and the Lighthouse. I think the consensus will be... that whether enjoyed in the white of winter or the green of summer, it's an awesome view 8*O

Charlie has been tripping down memory lane on the What'sUP page each day since we began our ninth year on the Pasty Cam. By the way, to put the time frame in perspective, Pasty.NET as an Internet service began in 1999, a year after the Pasty Cam originated, and the Brockway Relay project was installed in 2004. Time flies when you're having fun!

Super picture! Wish I were there right now!

I meant all 3 pictures are super!

I think I'd like to try taking a sled down that slope. Just put on a helmet,a little extra padding and no problems.

By JanieT (Bobbysgirl) on Thursday, March 9, 2006 - 08:24 am:

Does the Wescott's(sp?) still operate/own the gift store on top of Brockway? Done the trek up there via snowmobile and car..never a disapointment..almost touch Heaven!

By Louis (Bookboy) on Thursday, March 9, 2006 - 08:37 am:

Thanks, I and my wife had such a great time when we were there right at that spot in the summer. Must of been two or three years ago. But we are coming back this fall with our two dogs Kismet and Bear. Breathtaking.

One of my favorite drives.Beautiful all the way to the top and breath taking views once there. Love these pictures.

By Shelley Trowbridge (Shelleyt36) on Thursday, March 9, 2006 - 09:06 am:

As usual, the view from UP there is breathtaking. I agree with Janie T, it is almost like touching heaven. Can't wait to get back up there this summer for a visit!

By Liz B (Lizidaho) on Thursday, March 9, 2006 - 10:32 am:

Yes, the Westcoats are the owners.

Gorgeous photos - A shout out to Karen C. Happy 44th Birthday Karen!!

By stix (Stixoutwest) on Thursday, March 9, 2006 - 10:41 am:

Hi all. This may really sound silly but in the last pic it looks like a big igloo by the buildings, right along the side of the road. It's the blob to the left of what I am guessing is the Mariner North. What is it??? I doubt the snow plows would pile snow right there! I am probably way out in left field but curious!!

By dlp (Babyseal) on Thursday, March 9, 2006 - 10:51 am:

Now my curiosity is peaked. Looks like someone made a snow statue? Maybe of a birthday cake? (Can you tell I am waiting for lunch?)
Beautiful pictures.

an unfinished construction covered with visqueen?

By John Peasley (Jmpsly) on Thursday, March 9, 2006 - 12:16 pm:

What is the high radio tower on top of Brockway and how long has it been there?

By Chris Kelly (Chriskelly) on Thursday, March 9, 2006 - 02:20 pm:

I just want to thank you for the daily joy you bring to me as I gaze on all the lovely photos. We were on Brockway in Sep 2005 and took some photos, too, of course.

By dave sou (Davesou) on Thursday, March 9, 2006 - 05:26 pm:

great pics ... except for that TOWER...
I'm amazed that someone didn't block that politically from going up.
Its a real shame...

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Thursday, March 9, 2006 - 06:28 pm:

Oh well, somethings need to not be politically correct.

By Seismic Pirate (Marc) on Thursday, March 9, 2006 - 09:16 pm:

Easy Dave, it might be an evil necessity-that's the highest spot around so maybe someone didn't have a choice.

I would hazard a guess that the tower either brings:
1. 911 service to the area
2. Fire and police communications for the area, or
3. cell coverage to the area (important if your car breaks down while enjoying the view)

In any case, it does detract from the view but is probably necessary to the people who actually live there, as well as those who visit.

However, being an avid reader, if it's a TV tower, they should tear it down:)

By Catherine--Holland MI (Catherine) on Thursday, March 9, 2006 - 10:07 pm:

Do they plow up there? How are there car tracks?

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Thursday, March 9, 2006 - 10:24 pm:

Is that tower on top of Brockway the pasty.net's DSL thing-a-ma-jig?

By Steve Haagen (Radsrh) on Thursday, March 9, 2006 - 11:06 pm:

Stix that is the light blue gift shop you see, Sheas I think. If you save the picture and blow it up you can see the white snow on top of the light blue building. Catherine no they do not plow Brockway it is a seasonal road and a snowmobile trail in the winter.

By Michael Musiel (Virtualyooper) on Thursday, March 9, 2006 - 11:35 pm:

The tower was installed in the 70's as part of an ambulance radio call service. It has been out of service for many years.

By Kelly Marshall (Kelly) on Friday, March 10, 2006 - 06:22 am:

As beautiful and rugged as the UP is, we do live in this century and things such as cell towers are here. No one could live in a time capsule nor exsist only is the scenery.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, March 10, 2006 - 08:30 am:

The pictures are magnificent as always. Laurie, I know you're reading these things. Why don't you join in once in a while?

By Nancy (Nsanderson) on Monday, March 13, 2006 - 09:07 pm:

I remember going to the top of Brockway after working the dinner shift. Sometimes it would be pitch black and the wind blowing. Enough to scare a person. During the day, no problem.
