Shoveling snow is a necessity here in the U.P., even if you have a snow blower or a plow, you still have to clean up around the steps and the door or maybe even cut back the snowbanks along the driveway. It seems that Chris Penegor captured the latter taking place in the evening hours, with the flash illuminating the stripes on this hard working shoveler's jacket. At least he can be sure that he's visible should a vehicle pull into that driveway while he's getting his heart rate pumping. Speaking of visibility, the second shot gives you an idea of what it looks like when your vision is reduced by a heavy snowfall. Some of those flakes look like baseballs dropping from the sky :-O

In case you missed it, our webmaster continues his memories about that first full week of the Pasty Cam back in 1998, over on the What'sUP page.

Whew, looks like a job.

Oh yes the snowstorm. Those were the days. Shoveling ain't my thing. But he's doing a good job.

Those two inch snowflakes do add up fast! Good morning, All. I do like the effect of the flash on the reflective tape.

I am not sure but I seem to recall that there is a duck that goes by the name shining shoveler? Folks down here could not ever imagine this much snow to deal with. We are planning to put out our first plants in the field today, cabbage and other cole crops.

I remember the first winter, here in Indiana...and I was amazed that there was no need to shovel the sidewalks and driveway...because by the second or third day after a snowfall, the snow has melted on the pavement. Not like Michigan...or these pics, where the snow stays until spring ;)

He missed a spot.

Great photos.... I see lots and lots of "orbs" here. I like to believe they are our dear relatives.. Soon we will be seeing those beautiful Spring flowers!!!!

Sur5er,

I had the opposite experience. Coming from Indiana I was surprised that when we received the first snowfall in the UP how far everyone shoveled the snow to each side of the walk or driveway. I thought everyone was overzealous, but by April of that winter (98-99) I understood because we'd run out of places to throw the snow that had fallen in the driveway :)

Makes my back hurt just looking at it.

I miss the snow!

Mutta, ymmärrän Brent. :) Opiskelen suomea ja ranskaa. (Opiskelen
ranskaa koulussa.)

I'm studying Finnish, does anybody know any Finnish here? If so,
correct me if I said anything wrong, please.

John and Anne from Ky. The only time I ever had frostbite was in Kentucky. We were backpacking around Christmas of 95 and the week had been a rainy week. It was Christmas break for IU and me and a few buddies just decided we needed to go backpacking. I was so broke at that point I had to wrap duck tape around my boots to keep the soles from falling off. Anyway it rained for about 3 straight days and my boots became waterloged. Then the rain turned to snow and my boots froze. I spent the next 3 days walking around in blocks of ice. So whenever I think of Kentucky I think of snow and frostbite :) To make things even better the blower moter in my little Ranger quit working, so we had no heat for the drive home. We were crammed shoulder to shoulder in our heavy winter jackets. But it is one of my favorite times to remember.

Wow! My pictures actually made it on the front page! I've been visiting pasty.com everyday for about 6 or 7 years. A couple of weeks ago my wife took the top picture of me shoveling at our place in Green Bay WI. It felt like when I was a kid growing up in the UP, we had a blizzard and recieved 14" of snow. I should've taken a picture the day before because our snow was almost all gone. The next day I went up to my parents place in Ontonagon I took the second picture to show my wife that I couldn't get away from the snow.

Look at the top photo and squint a little. The reflective tape looks like the international symbol for someone rubbin' a sore back.

The first time I saw scotchlite was on a Kargers Sausage sign, 1950, near woodside location; red & yellow. I tried for years to figure out what it was.
