As we come to the end of a short month, we take a moment (our monthly tradition) to remember our friends and loved ones who have left us:

Martha Dostaler
Joanne Drake
Gordie Lassila
Leonard "Peasoup" Marcotte
John Pippenger
Service members who gave all

You can pause and remember someone dear to you by adding them here below. Special thanks to Bill Haller for providing us with a beautiful U.P. sunrise to reflect upon.

Remembering all of my Hanley and Harrington relatives, from Hancock, who have gone before us..may they rest in peace. I am watching the sun break over Houghton and Hancock this morning, on the MTU webcam....hardly as beautiful as being there in person, but still lets us, here on the South side of Chicago, feel connected to the UP...which is exactly why we visit pasty.com each AM. Have a great day.

Rembering Winky Pyrra of Big Traverse.
He was a great lover of the great outdoors. He enjoyed camping, hunting, and especially bobbing for lake trout on Lake Superior. He smoked a lot of the fish he caught and shared them with his many friends.
He had a great sense of humor. He often said, if anyone ever catches a fish out at Traverse that was wearing glasses and false teeth, It was his fish. It seems he had lost his overboard at one time.
He enjoyed camping in his little Toyota camper. He camped mostly in the UP but drove up to Alaska and spent some time exploring and camping.
Winky was a "Happy Camper".

Remembering Aunt Pat, who passed away on February 10, 2006. Of all the memories I cherished most, was the summer vacation we spent at her cabin in Presque Isle, Wisconsin...sitting on the dock from sunrise to sunset and taking in the beauty of the UP, on the other side of the lake.
One particularly beautiful day, as Aunt Pat and I sat on the dock with the rest of the family, the men folk got hungry...and instead of climbing up the hill to the house and cooking inside, she made the men bring the barbeque and food down to the dock, and proceeded to grill dinner right on the dock. To this day, I still chuckle when I think of Aunt Pat and her Bar-B on the dock...as we all jokingly refer to it now.
What I will miss most about wonderful Aunt Pat, is the way she leaned in when talking to me or anyone else, and would place her hand on your arm as she talked, drawing you in. Just an amazing woman, who will be so sadly missed.

By Kate Plemel (Kplemel) on Tuesday, February 28, 2006 - 11:31 am:

In memory of Bill Malkson, Evelyn Servatius and Rollie LaCanne. Good friends, gone too soon but never forgotten.

By Pete Wilberding (Peshtigopete) on Tuesday, February 28, 2006 - 11:42 am:

I see by the Mining Gazette the old bridge in Eagle River will soon be no more. Too bad. As you drive accrose upstate New York on the thruway you will see many new bridges accross the Mohawk river but they have not torn down the old ones. There is a Mississippi river bridge in St Louis that has been replace by a new one as far as auto traffic goes but the old one is still there for pedestrian and bicycle traffic. This is the way to go.

While reading todays postings, it reminds as to be thankful for who I have with me, be thankful for those whom have pasted me and to be grafteful to know those whom lay ahead of me. Some times in this busy and hecktic world we forget to say thank you and tell our loved ones how much they mean to us and how they are loved. My mother passed 3 years ago and I never was able to say good bye to her...and say those last words. Please be kind to one another, you never know when the good Lord will take you or your loved ones home. May God Bless all your loved ones and those whom have passed keeping our country safe from harm and with our continued freedom.

By 69 TOOT (Flyindamooney) on Tuesday, February 28, 2006 - 08:33 pm:

Walter.....thanks for remembering...I welcomed home tonight. a young man who had just finished his second tour in Iraq. His reflections were twofold. First, that as long as the burden is not shared equally, i.e. as long as there is no draft, that most Americans just don't really care. His second thought was that the 16,825 wounded you mention reflect at least that many American families or more changed forever because of our ability to save almost any wounded not killed outright...and the horrific nature of their wounds. Thanks for remembering....
(drafted in 1970 during another questionable war and never sorry for the experience)

By clinton drake (Clint) on Friday, March 3, 2006 - 01:45 am:

In loving memory of my grandmother, Joanne (Dupuis) Drake (1932-2006). There are no way that words can do justice to her brilliance and how important she was to me.
All I can do is to thank her for the countless wonderful memories we had together, for teaching me to "march to the beat of my own band", for instilling "street smarts", and always telling me "sometimes, you've just gotta kick •••." I'll miss cutting your toenails because you couldn't reach them, eating your "secret" fudge recipe, all the cards and packages in the mail, going to church, strolling down "memory lane", you chasing the garbage man without dentures and laughing about it for a good hour afterwards, going to lunch, listening to Dean Martin relentlessly, watching funny movies, that big robe and cup of coffee when I got out of the shower, your beaming face to greet me at the airport, your encouragement, your companionship, your unconditional love, and everything about you. You will always live in my heart and memories and I will miss you every day for the rest of my life.
Since all of Joan's immediate family lived out of state, I would like thank her extensive network of friends for their love and support through the years. She loved all of you and held you all in the highest regard.

Clint Drake

Clint, First off, I'm sorry about your grandmother. Who was your dad? I went to school with him my whole life if his name is Marty. I haven't seen him in years but I never forget him. It sounds like your grandma was a wonderful person and a great grandmother. I didn't know her very well. Condolences to your whole family.

"Deb", yes, my father is Marty Drake, LLHHS class of 1970. His brother was Terry Drake, class of 1971. Joanne's husband was Clinton "Cut" Drake, and her parents were Nelson and Aurelia (Remillard) Dupuis.
