Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Friday, February 24, 2006 - 07:24 am:

Pete Wilberding was recently visiting in the Keweenaw and from the looks of it enjoyed a bit of touring the area by snowmobile. This shot is one that I've never seen in person, even with having lived here in the Copper Country my whole life, it's a wintry Brockway Mountain Summit, in Copper Harbor. Pete's looking up toward the top and you can just make out the metal tower up there, through the falling snow. This shot has me wondering now, if our webmaster, Charlie Hopper has ever had to take a ride up there by snowmobile, to make adjustments to the Pasty.net Wireless DSL that generates on top of the mountain. Any stories Charlie? :->

Correction: If you take note a bit further down the page here, Pete says that he and a friend snowshoed up Brockway to get this outstanding view! He enjoyed hearing the wind in the tree tops, the call of a pileated woodpecker and seeing the mouse tracks in the snow that ended abruptly at the imprint of an owls wings where he had himself a snack. In other words, at a much slower pace than that of a snowmobile ride! Thanks for the added info Pete!

Mary, Mary, - I'm pressed for time this morning, but could tell some tales about winter at the top of Brockway - or spring, summer, and fall for that matter. I've made a few movies of our adventures up there with the wireless relay, and just need to find the time to upload them. Maybe in year #9 of the Pasty Cam (which begins next week) we can take these daily visit to the next level, with audio, video and the delicious smells from the pasty kitchen through your RealAroma(tm) Player.

Well, maybe we can do 2 out of 3 of that wish list...

Fine album PETE! Also magnificent this mountain!

What a shot, Pete! I've only had the pleasure of seeing that in the summer so it's nice to see it like that. Have a good weekend everyone!

Mary Drew says: Hi Deb, Did you see my message on yesterday's What'sUP page, regarding your post? :-)

That is an awesome trek via snowmobile, done it a few times ourselves!

By Debra J McCumber (Debrajean) on Friday, February 24, 2006 - 08:38 am:

Hey Nate - this sort of looks like the hill in your back yard, doesn't it? : )

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Friday, February 24, 2006 - 09:42 am:

Wow! What I wouldn't give to be able to experience seeing Brockway in the winter :)

By Nate (Nalwine) on Friday, February 24, 2006 - 09:42 am:

Deb--yes it does a little bit. It reminds me a lot of the cliff on the other side of the Cedar Swamp. I hiked there not too long ago and think I saw some Liger tracks in the snow :)

By Debra J McCumber (Debrajean) on Friday, February 24, 2006 - 09:45 am:

Hey Sur5er - I'm ready when you are. You can pick me up on your way up!! : )

By stix (Stixoutwest) on Friday, February 24, 2006 - 09:50 am:

Hmmmm, Charlie....if you come up with a way to send that pasty aroma via the internet, I want to be one of the first to receive it! Tell me what software I need and off to Best Buy I'll go!! Sure looks like Winter back there! But isn't Spring just around the corner??!! Have a great day everyone.

My God that is beautiful, I so want to live on the Lake. But I live in Southern Minn. We, my wife and I and the two dogs,(Kismet and Bear) go up the North Shore every year. One year we stayed a Copper Harbor,MI. Stop in at Gay for a beer and chat, neat people. How are the fall colors in the first week of Oct? Thank you all for such a nice invite. untill tomorrow.

By JAD, Oscar, MI (Jandalq) on Friday, February 24, 2006 - 10:12 am:

X-C skiers also have experienced the top of Brockway in mid-winter, or at least in March. Often the very top shows exposed blacktop! The only hill that is scary is the descent to Copper Harbor. Going the other way towards the Silver River you can double pole about a mile! It's like walking the Mackinac Bridge and biking Brockway. Biking was interesting--I walked up 3 hills and down 5! Every Yooper should do them at least once!!!!!

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Friday, February 24, 2006 - 10:18 am:

bookboy: color in Keweenaw is usually prime the first week or two of October.

Mary we were on snoeshoes.

Mary says: Thanks for the clarification, Pete. Please refer to added correction in my above notes for further info about Pete's trek to the top!

Debrajean, It's a date :) I suggest we take our doggies, eh ;) I think Bailey, Da Abbi, and your Abby would enjoy that.

By Gordon Jelsma (Gordomich) on Friday, February 24, 2006 - 04:49 pm:

Nate, make sure to head the other way when encountering Liger tracks. I ran into one while hiking once and it killed my dog and really did a number on me - 120 stiches.

Japei--

I enjoyed today's game--Finland v. Russia and
my dad and I look forward to watching Finland
face off against Sweden on Sunday. What a
great finale for Finland in hockey.

But I must tell you-- everyone here in Canada
was happy when Canada (really the province
of Newfoundland which is a lot like the UP)
beat Finaland at curling.

I'll be wearing my Finnish tee-shirt on Sunday.

Go Suomi, go!

Pete and a snowmobile? I don't see that happening.

Great shot, Pete!
