The archive photo choices today, have us checking out a variety of structures around the U.P. We start out in 2006, with a “hidden” wall behind the Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity on College Avenue in Houghton, next to the Vision Clinic. Donn de Yampert snapped what looks like a stone wall, but is actually a terrace walkway of steps. It’s said to date back to the mining days and was constructed for the servants to walk to their housing after working in the mansion. Quite an interesting work of art that’s also quite practical for getting UP or down the hill.

The photo of our next structure appeared on the Pasty Cam in 2014. That’s the Sand Hills Lighthouse on Five Mile Point Road, during its construction in 1918. It is a wonderful Bed and Breakfast on the shore of Lake Superior where you can travel back in time to the maritime days of the Copper Boom. They’ve also been a “relay” for the Pasty.Net Internet signal for years.

The last structure photo comes to us from Ryan Byykkonen in 2015. Champion Mine #4 was located in the Painesdale area, part of the Copper Range Mines which produced copper back in 1901 until it closed in 1967. It briefly closed from 1945 to 1948 during that time, so equipment could be removed from a lower level in order for that portion of the mine to be abandoned. The mine reached 5,500 feet from the surface at one point in its operation.

The video for today, takes us to the Sand Hills Lighthouse Bed and Breakfast for a more current view from 2015. You’ll also see a few other lighthouses around the U.P. and learn a bit more information about the Sand Hills history and the owners, too. Before you listen, I’ll warn you to be prepared for a “different” pronunciation of the “Keweenaw”.

Yes, Mary, that IS an interesting pronunciation!!!

It's interesting that they even built the lighthouse
that late in the game. But they went all out and
it's a beauty! How fun that would be to stay there!
