We here in the U.P. are beginning to feel we’re stuck in a circle of waking up to the same day/weather, like the movie Ground Hog Day, with Bill Murray. The weather predictions at least for the Keweenaw, have had snow in them for weeks. Taking a look back on this day in the archives, it’s again a mix of snow/no snow, starting with a photo snapped at Mont Ripley back in 2006. Susan Hooker was there watching people sledding down the hill, as it was still snow-covered, but not enough of a base for skiing.

We head to Marquette for the second archive shot, snapped by Art Brabbs. He spotted this brave soul riding the crest of a wave there in the Harbor, which means that the ice was gone by this time in 2007.

Then in 2016, the photo from Kassy Kallio shows a later Easter, with sunshine and bare ground for the kids Easter Egg Hunt. Must have still been a little chilly, though, since they are wearing jackets and boots.

Looking at the present, we have a photo from Sharon Bodenus, taken at McCarty’s Cove in Marquette. You can see the ice cover is beginning to melt in the Cove there and the water is reflecting the smoke from the stacks in the distance. Look closely and you’ll see a freighter at the ore dock, too.

Today’s video made me say WOW! I’ve seen a number of photos and videos of folks surfing the winter/spring waves on Lake Superior and Lake Michigan, but this is a first for me, watching a 10 year old boy catching a wave in April 2011. Surf’s UP!

WOW is right! That video is a hoot. Did you see the excitement on his face? And the look of disbelief at his ice cold hands was a crack-up. That's one gnarly dude.

Nice review and the video is SISU at it's finest!!

Did you see how he sprang from a laying down position to standing on that board!! I think I could do that when I was his age.... now... I'd have a hard time just getting up if I was sitting on the floor or ground!!! lol And forget the dip in the lake, even after a sauna.... can you say Cardiac Arrest.... man, when did I get so old?? :(

There were those trying to surf this past weekend
in Duluth. I think that didn't go so well. Those
waves were monstrous...and COLD!
