The Pasty Cam archives had a few interesting Shoebox Memories on this day throughout the years, beginning with a photo scanned from John E. Kivela, Jr. taken in the Allouez Store. It was featured in 2005 and Charlie wrote the following about it then: "In the heart of the Keweenaw in the late 1930's, in the small village of Allouez (pronounced Al'-ooh-way), one enthusiastic entrepreneur served the community's retail needs, John E. Kivela is visible on the extreme right, toward the back of the store. John, Jr. mentioned that the store was on US-41 between Effinger's Standard Oil gas station and the Allouez Ice Rink. His dad delivered groceries from Allouez to Copper Harbor including Eagle River and Eagle Harbor, as well as Cliff mine location."

The second photo appeared in 2006, shared by Ryan Kangas and was not a Shoebox Memory at the time, but very well could be today, since it is 11 years old now. You'd never know it though, since not much has changed in this pictured since it was taken, especially when it's taken in the dark of night. Awesome reflection with the haze just above the water dividing the two bridges.

Copper Country Reflections supplied us with the Shoebox Memory in 2011 on this date, showing some of the unrest back in 1913 during the labor disputes with the mining company in the Copper Country. Time certainly marches on as we approach the 104 year mark of that historic Copper mining strike and the tragedy of Christmas Eve at the Italian Hall. Take a look at the link at the beginning of this paragraph for more photos from the 1913 strike.

Our video today, is a musical one that goes right in line with the last photo...Woody Guthrie singing 1913 Massacre. Good time to pause and remember that tragedy and those who lost their lives that night.

Good morning Mary,

re: UC's comment about retirement

Jbuck...
It ain't so! Just retired from my 24/7 full time AFC Home job as owner and operator. Still staying busy with the Pasty Cam and another part time job I have. :-)

Woo hoo! Glad to hear that Mary!

Mary says: Thanks, JBuck!! Merry Christmas!

Regarding the 2011 photo "Calumet 1913", it never fails to amaze me that the landscape of that era was so stark. The requirements that called for the harvesting of so many trees and seemingly lack of any vegetation is simply astounding.
