If you've been following the Pasty Cam during the past 19 years, you know that water is most often a theme for the photos we've featured. Back in 2007, Dan Larson took us for a flight over the Huron Island Light Station, showing how remote and high up off Lake Superior the lighthouse is. This light was originally built in 1868 to serve as a guide between Marquette and Pequaming, along with the L'Anse/Baraga and Houghton/Hancock ports. It's located three miles north of Huron Point and the Huron Mountains and twenty miles east of the Keweenaw Peninsula. Remote is a good word to describe this beacon's location surrounded by Gitche Gumme!

The water featured in 2010, was snapped by Melanie Hakala Rossi in the Porcupine Mountains State Park. That's the Manabezho Falls, located on the Presque Isle River that flows through the park. The falls span the 150 foot wide river and drop about 20 feet over a rocky ledge. Beautiful spot!

Our last water visit, is a doozy…Lake Superior in a frenzy and rolling in and crashing on the shoreline rocks. Donica Hope Dravillas snapped this amazing photo of the raw power of the Big Lake in 2014.

We've got a special treat in our video today, Terry Pepper, of Seeing the Light, is taking us for a visit to the Huron Island Light Station. He made the visit back in 2010, with a group of friends, including Dick Campbell, who had spent his summers on the island as a child when his dad was First Assistant Keeper there in the late 1930's and early 40's. This was only the second time Dick had been back to the island since his childhood. Enjoy this rare visit.

video is something I wish I would have been doing
when I was visiting Huron Bay and the mouth of the
River. It was exciting to see the Huron Islands
in the distance, but the waves were too big for me
to even think about going out on that lake.

Dramatic pix and nicely done video! The nusic was very smoothing.

My favorite pic today is the picture of the waterfalls, although the picture of the wave is nice also.
It is sad to see the state of disrepair the lighthouses have fallen into. I suppose it is inevitable. Eventually everything will succumb to a better idea.

Sure remember the days when us Coast Guardsmen used to man that light station. It was considered pretty good duty (compared to the likes of Rock Of Ages)!
Interestingly, Huron Island didn't have a fixed antenna to send/receive radio messages; instead, they were given what was known as a PRC-59 which was a portable FM radio, and not very powerful at all. From the old Portage station at upper entry, we could only raise them about half the time. Those were the days!

Our vacation home is near the Straits of Mackinac, about 8 miles down the Lake Huron coast from Cheboygan. The Poe Reef light can be seen from our place. I remember when it was manned; we drove our boat out there and the Coast Guard guys welcomed us aboard (I think they were pretty bored).

I heard it and other lighthouse are now for sale. Being the Poe Reef light is out in the water, it would be kind of a hard property to move. There is one on Bois Blanc island that is in private hands.

Some of the lighthouse are being turned
into bed & breakfasts, which is kind of
nice. But how sad.

Wonderful photos and video today; thanks all! The
Huron Islands are close to my heart. Spent lots of
summer and fall vacations at the mouth of the
Huron River looking out at them, and got to spend
some time on my uncle's boat out among the
islands. Incredible place!

Boy would I like to see those Islands. Nice photos and video today!

In the Soo tonight, half tempted to blast west tomorrow, the only problem... just makes the drive back to the burbs of the Motor City that much farther on Friday. Plan on going to the Keweenaw in October with my good buddy Marty to celebrate his retirement from the White Lake Police Dept., we're looking forward to this upcoming trip!!

Didn't see any freighters in the locks this evening, will check again tomorrow after leaving the hospital. Have a good evening.
