Probably one of the most common themes for photographs throughout the past 19 years here on the Pasty Cam, has been "beautiful views". For example, we look back to 2000, when the original Pasty Camist, Jon Hopper snapped the top photo, standing at the Lac La Belle marina. I'm not certain, but I think the large "hill" in the distance is Mt. Horace Greeley.

That's where the next photo was taken in 2016, by the other half of the father/son duo who started the ball rolling for the Pasty Cam in the beginning, Charlie Hopper. Mt. Horace Greeley was home to the Radar Base years ago and many of the buildings are still standing. Pasty.NET has antenna equipment there on top one of the former radar dome structures, so Charlie snapped the view from UP there, while working to set up what was needed here on the mainland, before heading out to Isle Royale to set up what was needed out there to connect for Internet service on the Island.

To complete our "views" today, Pam Heide Olgren snapped a shot while out at Isle Royale this past week. Peaceful, serene, beautiful…you can almost hear the water lapping up on the rocks. I bet if you listen hard enough, you might even hear a loon!

Our video treat today, was recorded by Charlie while he was on top of Mt. Horace Greeley that day in 2016. We get a somewhat "live" view of the antenna job and the outstanding vista he enjoyed while high over the Keweenaw.

Nice images! Love the video from atop Mt. Horace
Greeley! Thanks to Jon, Charlie and Pam!

Speaking of nice views, have you all seen the new
webcam views of the Mackinac Bridge? The Camera 1
view from the admin building looking south is
still the same, but scroll down to see much
better image quality from the other cameras. In
my browser, it takes 10 seconds or so for the
images to catch up with the current date, but
well worth the short wait.

Great views of the bridge, Dunerat. Thanks for the link.

Several people have asked me, what ever became of the link to Isle Royale, and the broadband service? After mounting the antenna here on the Keweenaw side, and mounting the same kind of dish on the water tower at Rock Harbor, we achieved about a 60 mbit link, which I enjoyed using over several long weekends last June. Our proof-of-concept was successful. But the whole project was under a temporary authorization, and eventually we had to take down the equipment on Isle Royale. The reason we were given (by the folks in charge) why they would not issue a permit to continue the service, is that campers would be unhappy on days that fog and rain interrupted the signal and made the service unusable. We offered to manage an automatic failover to satellite for any such occurrences, and that is the last contact we have had with the Park Service about the matter. We were not given the opportunity to install such a failsafe system.

So now the only Internet available at Rock Harbor is satellite - even on sunny days, which is most of the time. So campers are not being disappointed by losing fast, unlimited Internet service when it rains... since they don't have it to begin with. This is one Yooper who still has a hard time seeing the wisdom in that decision: "If it can't be perfect, then don't even try it." It's a good thing those who came before us didn't take that view. Nobody would be living in the U.P. or Isle Royale.

HOLD ON TO THAT ROPE CHARLIE!! LOL

Great photos and video today, and as always! What I'd give to be at the LLB Marina right now, one of my favorite places and many memories!!

Had to watch that video again, very cool!!

I used to deliver Coke products to the base in the early 70s while going to Tech. Never had much time to see the view but the officers club was nice.

Would love 2 visit Isle Royale someday. Looks like the radar base
has fallen into a bit of disrepair.
